Unregistered vehicle detection: Goodyear CheckPoint now enables users to monitor tyre condition of vehicles not yet registered in their Goodyear FleetHub application and outside customer’s network. Fleet Overview Report: A new fleet-level report provides users with a detailed overview of tyre conditions, per vehicle, axle and wheel position. Goodyear CheckPoint is fully integrated with Goodyear FleetHub, DriverHub and FleetOnlineSolutions applications, ensuring instant access to alerts, reports, and historical data. Fleet managers can easily customize their simulations by adjusting parameters such as average yearly distance per vehicle, average fuel consumption, and fuel cost. Brigade Electronics Group, based in South Darenth, UK, provides market-leading vehicle safety systems which reduce the risk of collision and maximise efficiency to commercial vehicle customers worldwide. 

It won the award for its Radar Predict Solution for articulated vehicles, hailed as one of the most technically sophisticated systems in the market. The technology identifies the behaviour of vehicles as well as vulnerable road users (VRU) by gathering object detection data such as speed, direction, acceleration and turning rate of the vehicle.

DP World handles more than 1.8 million containers each year from its deep-water Southampton port facility. With such a high volume of traffic, maximising efficiency and minimising downtime is key. The goal has recently been aided by DP World Southampton extending its partnership with Goodyear to retrofit the latest state of the art tyre pressure measurement system across its port operations, including over 80 straddle carriers.

DP World has worked with Goodyear for 20 years and the partnership has extended from using Goodyear’s bespoke port tyres to a full-service partnership that involves its latest technology. 

Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty is a drive-past tyre inspection system that allows automated and dynamic tyre pressure measurement. The drive-past technology removes the need for physical tyre pressure checks, freeing up port staff to focus on other operational priorities. 

Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty is centralised around durable hardware and user-friendly mobile and web applications. It uses technology proven by Goodyear’s global commercial vehicle industry fleets but upscaled and adapted for use on larger container handling machines such as the straddle carriers operating at DP World Southampton. 

The system uses receivers that read and analyse data from the machine’s dedicated heavy duty tyre pressure sensors as they drive by. This saves valuable time for the operator, as Martin Ranger, Managing Director at Goodyear service partner, Pro Support Services Limited, explains: “Over the years DP World has stayed in tune with the tyre industry’s latest innovations by using Goodyear’s latest products and technical innovations. 

“We fit Goodyear EV-4M tyres, proven to provide an excellent return on investment for DP World thanks to improved tread wear and increased comfort compared to previous generation tyres. Following a test period, we have rolled out the Goodyear DrivePoint HD solution across the fleet. Through Goodyear mobile and web platforms, our experts can remotely manage tyre pressures, allowing staff to be more productive.

“This not only ensures that tyre pressures are optimised, but it also improves vehicle stability. We have a great triangular relationship between Goodyear, Pro Support Services Limited and DP World who work closely to ensure that we deliver the best products, technology, and support to manage the customer’s investments.”

DP World’s partnership with Goodyear also supports the TreeNation initiative. For every tyre fitted, DP World donates £10 to the initiative, enough for two trees to be planted.

Results from Goodyear’s recent Sustainable Reality Survey show that UK fleets are more focused on sustainability than their European counterparts. More than 1,400 fleets from 33 countries were asked about their current efforts and targets for the future.

93% of UK fleets are committed to sustainability goals, compared to the European average of 83%¹. The UK industry is also in a position of strength when it comes to investing in sustainable solutions, including fuel-efficient tyres, telematics and driver training.

UK fleets: Sustainability and cost efficiency will continue to drive the adoption of mobility solutions

According to Goodyear’s 2022 Sustainable Reality Survey¹, fleets continue to recognise the importance of sustainable investments, with 41% saying that reducing operational costs was a significant factor when considering new solutions. In the UK, 98% of fleets recognised the importance of sustainability, significantly higher than the European average.

In 2022, the survey revealed that fleets are increasingly conscious of sustainability, with investments increasing year-on-year. Not only do fleets now see sustainability as a worthwhile social cause, but many are also seeing bottom-line improvements.

Now in its third year, the survey has become a trusted source of information for the logistics industry, collating in depth information regarding the future of logistics and transportation.

Tyres and mobility solutions have an important role to play

The survey is interested in fleets’ approach to sustainability in different contexts. From understanding the latest environmental regulations, formalising sustainability objectives and measurements or using new solutions and technologies, including tyres and mobile solutions. Many European fleets using Goodyear’s Total Mobility offering have already seen enhanced performance and support in sustainability efforts. For example, using Goodyear’s FUELMAX ENDURANCE tyres can support delivering up to a 2% reduction in CO2, which equates to saving 40,000 litres of fuel per year for a 100-vehicle fleet¹. Additionally, mobility solutions like Goodyear TPMS, Goodyear CheckPoint or Goodyear DrivePoint can support faster and easier fleet management resulting in increased efficiency, effectiveness and supporting sustainability goals of fleets.

Last year, 54% of interviewed fleets said that fuel-efficient tyres are part of their sustainability strategy, second only to deploying more efficient vehicles. In the past fleet operators had been forced to choose between durability, grip, fuel efficiency and mileage, but the latest Goodyear products and mobility solutions offered under Goodyear Total Mobility help to achieve the right balance and drive better results for the fleets.

Switching from a C-label to a fuel-efficient B- label tyre represents a reduction of 2% in CO2 reduction. As per internal calculation, this may translate into a saving of about 1 tonne of CO2 emissions and 400L of fuel per truck, per year.

Goodyear is launching innovative DrivePoint Heavy Duty tyre monitoring solution which helps container handling maintenance managers improve preventive tyre maintenance and reduce vehicle downtime.  

Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty is based around, durable hardware and user-friendly mobile and web applications. It uses technology proven in the truck industry but upscaled and adapted for use on larger container handling machines such as reach stackers, straddle carriers and automated guided vehicles (AGV).  

The system uses battery-powered receivers that will be based in the port or yard. The receivers read and analyse data from the machine’s dedicated heavy duty on-valve tyre pressure sensors as they drive-past which saves valuable time for the operator. The easy to install Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty hardware is only part of the solution. Through its Proactive Solutions centre of excellence, Goodyear has vast experience in creating online fleet and tyre management tools. As a result, Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty features three pieces of software for operators, drivers and technicians: Goodyear FleetHub, Goodyear DriverHub and Goodyear TechHub.  

Goodyear FleetHub is a specifically designed web and mobile application designed to deliver constant information regarding the condition of the fleet’s tyres. The integrated connectivity with the machine and port hardware makes it a data-driven tyre management solution and gives the operator and operational personnel full and remote visibility of the machine’s tyre status. The system notifies you when a tyre needs urgent maintenance allowing operators to efficiently manage the machines their way.  

Goodyear DriverHub uses the same data streams but turns it into driver-relevant information, delivering constant information regarding tyre condition. Connected with the Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty, the app assists drivers and operators to make appropriate decisions to help reduce tyre related incidents and supports strengthening port's safety.  

Goodyear TechHub assists technicians to easily manage the installation and/or maintenance of Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty. The intuitive mobile app aids the set-up across fleets, guides the user through the installation procedure and allows the rapid input of the right parameters for each hardware type.  

All three solutions are synchronized with the Goodyear cloud, so that the data remains collected when out of network range.

Goodyear DrivePoint Heavy Duty was installed at the ECT Euromax and ECT Delta terminals on automated guide vehicles.  

This trial concluded that vehicles could be serviced efficiently and that the solution helped extending tyre service life. The solution was strongly appreciated for the needs of their AGV operations as there were no stoppages for tyre checking. Extended software solutions can now bring the same advantages to driver-operated container handling vehicles.  

The introduction of Drive Point Heavy Duty is a further extension of Goodyear's portfolio of products and services intended for port applications. In 2021, Goodyear introduced the EV-4S Gen II, EV-5S Gen II and EV-4M Port Handler tyre designs extending the company's wide range of port handling tyres and tailor-made solutions for container handlers, reach stackers, straddle carriers, shuttle sprinter carriers and other similar equipment.

When the final stage of the Dakar was completed on Sunday, 15 January, Boss Machinery Team De Rooy IVECO driver Janus Van Kasteren was crowned the 2023 champion, finishing over 1 hour, 14 minutes clear of his closest rival. Teammates Martin and Mitchel Van Den Brink finished third and fourth in other De Rooy-run trucks. 

While the rock, sand and mud surface of the Dakar, coupled with its steep inclines and descents, are a far cry from the challenges faced every day by Europe’s haulage operators, Goodyear employs the same approach to what is arguably motorsport’s toughest event. Tyres require a design to meet the demands of the conditions in order to extract maximum efficiency, reliability and performance. 

To prepare for this year’s Dakar, Goodyear’s engineers worked side-by-side with Team De Rooy in the team’s test in Morocco three months ago. The test included a simulated version of Dakar, using the Sahara desert to replicate typical features of the Saudi Arabian landscape. The test served to evaluate the Goodyear OFFROAD tyres, which feature a dedicated off-road compound, deep non-skid tread and improved resistance to cuts, making them an ideal choice for the unpredictable Dakar conditions. 

The five days in Morocco also served another purpose; to trial a new Tire Pressure Monitoring System. This on-board technology features a sensor placed within the tyre to alert the driver of anomalies in tire pressure through a display mounted on the truck’s dashboard. On rocky terrain and tough desert surfaces, advance warning regarding tyre temperature and pressure can save teams valuable time in rectification. 

Back on the roads of Europe, identical technology helps saving time, increases efficiency and improves the safety of fleet operations. For example, the Goodyear TPMS technology streamlines the process of checking tyre health, cutting the number of hours a fleet spends on routine checks. An underinflation warning could also prevent a tyre causing further damage or negatively affect fuel efficiency.

As the only point of contact between the truck and the varied surfaces of the Saudi desert, choosing the right tyres is a crucial part of a team’s preparation. As such, Team De Rooy chose Goodyear OFFROAD tyres for the challenge, and Goodyear’s engineers worked closely with the team through the pre-event preparation in order to make sure they were ready for any eventuality. 

Janus Van Kasteren finished over 1 hour, 14 minutes ahead of his closest rival at the end of the rally, driving the No. 502 Boss Machinery Team De Rooy IVECO, supported by Darek Rodewald and Marcel Snijders. His teammates Martin and Mitchel Van Den Brink finished third and fourth, respectively. 

It marks another successful Dakar for Goodyear in the Truck category, after finishing first, second and third in last year’s event with another team. The Goodyear OFFROAD tyres that have proven so successful in these tough conditions over recent years are the same specification as those available for fleet operators across Europe. It is particularly designed for low heat generation and high speeds.
