The renewed agreement also marks 20 years of close and constructive collaboration between the two companies.

Over the past two decades, Goodyear and TIP Group have worked side by side to support demanding fleet operations across Europe. Goodyear has consistently supplied reliable, high-performance tire solutions from its leading commercial ranges, tailored to the operational requirements of TIP’s fleets and the evolving expectations of its customers.

As market conditions and regulatory requirements continue to change, sustainability has become an increasingly important focus of the partnership. Through the introduction of Goodyear’s latest generation of commercial truck tires, including the new KMAX GEN-3 range, TIP Group can offer its customers tires made with at least 40% sustainable materials1- all while maintaining the durability fleets rely on, combined with B-label rolling resistance to support improved fuel efficiency2.

Beyond tire supply, the partnership also includes the provision of services across Europe through more than 2,000 Goodyear TruckForce Network locations, to help TIP Group minimize unplanned breakdowns, optimize tire performance and keep vehicles on the road which is a critical factor for transport operators.

Together, these elements contribute to TIP Group’s broader ESG ambitions, supporting more sustainable fleet operations without compromising operational efficiency or customer value.

At the same time, TIP Group continues to actively respond to market challenges by modernising its fleet and service offering. Gifts for families topped the list of most likely to purchase online, with food items ranking the lowest.

The only items to go against that trend were Christmas dinner ingredients, which people are less likely to buy online, and greetings cards which, while consensually unpopular, were among the most popular online purchases.

Each year, roughly 1.65 billion tonnes of goods are lifted in the UK2, 275 times the weight of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Thousands of transport fleets are making this happen, all running to schedules that require efficiency and competitiveness while targeting sustainability objectives.

According to the survey, the average household expects to receive 11-15 deliveries during December, and 5% expect to rely on delivery services more than 26 times. This reflects the added pressure put on delivery drivers and fleets nationwide.

In December 2022, online purchases accounted for 27.1%3 of the total UK retail sales, doubling since 2015 and increasing tenfold since 2006.

Behind every Christmas delivery is a logistical marvel that makes it possible for an order to be packaged, shipped and delivered within hours. The 2023 edition is the third of its kind, and each year it aims to gain an understanding of how European fleets are driving forward sustainability in the transport and logistics sector, as well as examining the key barriers.

Among fleets in the UK and Ireland, the importance of sustainability is as high as their European counterparts, with 83% of fleets recognising the impact not only on the environment, but also for their overall operation and bottom line. This compares to nearly three-quarters of surveyed European fleets (68%) which consider sustainability as either ‘important’ or ‘very important’.

Meanwhile, 59% of UK and Irish fleets have formalised sustainability strategies and targets, compared to 33% of European fleets.

67% of fleets reported the active use of fuel-efficient tyres to boost efficiencies. Goodyear’s FUELMAX range is designed to minimise rolling resistance without compromising performance, safety and durability. It uses innovations such as IntelliMax Rib Technology, which stiffens the centre grooves to limit wear, and Flexomatic sipes that react to the forces exerted on the tyre to deliver enhanced grip under braking.

If a 100-vehicle diesel-powered fleet switched to Goodyear FUELMAX ENDURANCE, which can deliver a 2% improvement in rolling resistance1, the fleet would reduce its CO2 emissions by an estimated 100 tonnes and save 40,000 litres of fuel per year.

Megafleets, defined as fleets with more than 500 vehicles, are the most likely to deploy sustainable strategies, with 83% of these fleets in the UK and Ireland using fuel-efficient tyres. Furthermore, 70% had sustainability KPIs in place, compared to just 43% of fleets with between one and 50 vehicles.

However, results show that it remains a difficult climate to implement new, and often expensive, solutions. Over half of mid-sized fleets report cost as one of the key barriers.

“It’s clear from the survey results that fleets need assurances when it comes to making investments,” explains Maciej Szymański, Marketing Director, Commercial Europe, Goodyear. “The main wish from fleets is that solutions will lead to meaningful improvements in sustainability, and positively impact the bottom line. With Goodyear Total Mobility and its range of commercial vehicle tyres, we have an end-to-end solution that provides proven results every time.”

Fuel-efficient tyres a key contributor to fleet sustainability

The survey found that 70% of megafleets use fuel-efficient tyres to help them achieve their sustainability targets. That category also reported the highest use of retreaded tyres, too. In general, smaller fleets exploit these technologies less often, but could still have a significant impact on fleet profitability.

Across Europe, 56% of fleets use fuel-efficient tyres, with 42% reporting the use of retreaded tyres. Fleets that use the Goodyear retreading solutions can cut overall tyre expenditure by 10% and extend tyre life by an additional 150%2. While using existing resources as much as possible, Goodyear’s retreading process uses 56% less crude oil for manufacturing2.

Szymański adds: “This year’s edition of the Goodyear Sustainable Reality Survey found that the popularity of using tyretechnology to increase efficiency correlates to the size of the fleet. This is likely due to the upfront cost of buying the best-in-class tyre. The tyre was developed specifically for vehicles operating on inter-city and ‘park and ride’ routes for the growing commuter service requirements. In Europe, these routes are on the rise as local governments move to limit the amount of traffic in inner cities.

URBANMAX COMMUTER: Adapted to current requirements

The URBANMAX COMMUTER is Electric Drive Ready. Goodyear’s Electric Drive Ready philosophy means the company’s latest tyres are fit for use on electric, hybrid and conventional diesel machines. This reduces operator stocking requirements and reduces complexity in tyre management for fleet operators as the same tyre can be used, whatever the motive power. What is more important, the tyre is accommodating key requirements of electric vehicles which makes it a very good solution for fleets in transition from conventional to electrical drive concepts. For example, URBANMAX COMMUTER is providing excellent high load capacity1 - with 8t axle load capacity (load index 156/149) - which is required by modern electric buses.

As well as being optimised for the technical requirements of modern buses, the Goodyear URBANMAX COMMUTER is designed around the changing environment in Europe towards shorter public transport journeys and is helping to support the goal to reduce CO2 emissions. Park and ride services have enjoyed an upturn in popularity due to cities’ efforts to tackle congestion and improve air quality.

These journeys are characterised by less tread and sidewall wear than a typical inner-city bus, and distances between 20 and 100 kilometres, ideal for today’s EV buses. The URBANMAX COMMUTER features a stronger sidewall construction, leading to increased resistance to wear and damage. This enhances the sustainability and casing conservation of the tyre, as well as giving passengers a more comfortable ride.

An RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag is embedded inside the URBANMAX COMMUTER. This helps service providers, dealers and fleet operators manage their tyres more efficiently. Fleet managers are given accurate information on tyre assets, performance and casing management. It also saves time on routine maintenance checks as data coming from the tyre will alert any issues that require attention.

The tyre also features ‘IntelliMax’ grooves to reduce tread wear and improve traction and stability. ‘Flexomatic’ sipes and interlocking tread blocks improve traction under braking. The 3D sipes interlock and limit block movement for high mileage and excellent winter traction. It is also 3PMSF (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake) certified for winter use, keeping people moving all year round.

The new tyre can be fully retreaded, which brings additional benefits to fleets wishing

to take advantage of the URBANMAX COMMUTER. Its retreadability is another sustainable feature. This leads to extended tyre life, as well as lower use of crude oil used in manufacturing2 and less landfill generated.

Public transport sees surge in popularity across Europe

Reports predict a surge in demand for bus and coach services over the next four years, with an average annual growth rate of 4.44% until 20273. Factors such as increasing demand for travel and tourism and government incentives are two reasons for the forecasted growth.

Much of the demand for inter-city transport comes from the post-pandemic trend of hybrid working. Fewer commuters are travelling into the city each day and, when they do, a larger proportion are choosing park and ride services in order to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid driving at peak times.

URBANMAX COMMUTER is designed specifically for the technical needs of modern, inter-city bus routes. It also carries Goodyear’s Electric Drive Ready label, making it suitable for the latest generation of buses. In the first half of 2022, zero emission buses accounted for 30% of bus sales in Europe4, highlighting the importance of tyres that are ready for mainstream ZE routes. European regulators target the phasing out of new combustion engined buses by 2027.

Maciej Szymański, Marketing Director Commercial Europe, Goodyear, commented: “Goodyear expands its range with the URBANMAX COMMUTER after seeing a trend towards inter-city travel. The tyre includes all the latest structural and technological innovations. Buses are an important part of decarbonizing Europe’s cities, and this tyre gives an efficient platform for Zero Emission transport and provides grip no matter the season with its 3PMSF certified tread.”

1 8t axle load capacity (Load Index 156 = 4,000 kg/tyre). As part of their journey, the Dutch team used Goodyear OFFROAD tyres and Goodyear’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to help keep track of a vital part of their effort.

When the final stage of the Dakar was completed on Sunday, 15 January, Boss Machinery Team De Rooy IVECO driver Janus Van Kasteren was crowned the 2023 champion, finishing over 1 hour, 14 minutes clear of his closest rival. Teammates Martin and Mitchel Van Den Brink finished third and fourth in other De Rooy-run trucks.

While the rock, sand and mud surface of the Dakar, coupled with its steep inclines and descents, are a far cry from the challenges faced every day by Europe’s haulage operators, Goodyear employs the same approach to what is arguably motorsport’s toughest event. Tyres require a design to meet the demands of the conditions in order to extract maximum efficiency, reliability and performance.

To prepare for this year’s Dakar, Goodyear’s engineers worked side-by-side with Team De Rooy in the team’s test in Morocco three months ago. The test included a simulated version of Dakar, using the Sahara desert to replicate typical features of the Saudi Arabian landscape. The test served to evaluate the Goodyear OFFROAD tyres, which feature a dedicated off-road compound, deep non-skid tread and improved resistance to cuts, making them an ideal choice for the unpredictable Dakar conditions.

The five days in Morocco also served another purpose; to trial a new Tire Pressure Monitoring System. This on-board technology features a sensor placed within the tyre to alert the driver of anomalies in tire pressure through a display mounted on the truck’s dashboard. On rocky terrain and tough desert surfaces, advance warning regarding tyre temperature and pressure can save teams valuable time in rectification.

Back on the roads of Europe, identical technology helps saving time, increases efficiency and improves the safety of fleet operations. For example, the Goodyear TPMS technology streamlines the process of checking tyre health, cutting the number of hours a fleet spends on routine checks. An underinflation warning could also prevent a tyre causing further damage or negatively affect fuel efficiency.

Maciej Szymański, Marketing Director Commercial Europe, Goodyear: “Congratulations to Team De Rooy for winning what is arguably one of the motorsport’s toughest challenges. We have supported them with tyres and tyre management solutions several times before, but this year we are particularly proud of introducing TPMS to their four IVECO trucks. Combining our reliable tyres with tire management solutions was once again driving results - this time for Team De Rooy in the Dakar Rally.”

Gerard De Rooy, team owner, Team De Rooy: "Once again, Goodyear OFFROAD tires supported our team in achieving the best possible results in extremely difficult and unpredictable conditions. This year we were able not only to provide great durability and traction, but also to monitor the tire pressure on an ongoing basis thanks to the installed TPMS from Goodyear. This made it easier for us to adapt our strategy to the road conditions and performance of the tyres. It also helped us keep track of our tyre temperature and pressure levels and react quickly and in real time to any challenges that could result in extended downtime."

LATEST NEWS,Goodyear,IMAGES and VIDEOS,Truck and Bus,truck industrial aviation,Dakar

After almost 9000 kilometres of rock, sand and muddy terrain, with almost 5000 of those as special stages, the Dutch team finished first, third and fourth with three of its IVECO trucks.

As the only point of contact between the truck and the varied surfaces of the Saudi desert, choosing the right tyres is a crucial part of a team’s preparation. As such, Team De Rooy chose Goodyear OFFROAD tyres for the challenge, and Goodyear’s engineers worked closely with the team through the pre-event preparation in order to make sure they were ready for any eventuality.

Janus Van Kasteren finished over 1 hour, 14 minutes ahead of his closest rival at the end of the rally, driving the No. 502 Boss Machinery Team De Rooy IVECO, supported by Darek Rodewald and Marcel Snijders. It provides these services for numerous high-profile fleets, including those operated by large organisations such as Warburtons and Reynolds Logistics.

TruckForce has already made significant headway in its plans to increase both its headcount and the number of vans in its fleet by 30%, representing the largest expansion that the team has seen in seven years. With Goodyear having been recently appointed as the tyre and mobility solutions partner to a number of high-profile fleets over the past few months, TruckForce has begun to support an additional 20,000 trucks, trailers and vans throughout the UK. This growth will therefore be invaluable to providing extended support for both new and existing customers.

TruckForce operates from a network of strategically located hubs, in order to provide customers with national coverage. As part of this growth strategy, it has begun to adjust the profile of its existing hubs to reflect the evolving needs of the transportation industry. Its Yorkshire hub, for example, has been relocated to Rotherham, and the Derbyshire hub has moved to Derby in order to open a national training facility for new technicians.

The expansion will also see the creation of two new operational roles. These roles will be responsible for overseeing the day to day running of the TruckForce network and ensuring that it continues to excel in meeting customer needs. They will also see that the network is adhering to all necessary Health and Safety requirements.

Richard Tawlks, Manager of TruckForce Equity UK, comments: “This is a period of significant growth for our business, and the fact that it’s taking place is a reflection of the huge amount of hard work put in by our team. It’s a testament to the service that we provide for our customers and the confidence that they have in us. However, this is also an incredibly challenging time for the industry. The pandemic has put a real strain on fleets, with commercial organisations playing a vital role in keeping the UK moving, and we’re very proud to have been on hand to support. Now, with the UK opening up again, this expansion underway and the new contracts that Goodyear has recently taken on, it’s an incredibly exciting time for us at TruckForce. We can’t wait to see where this next step takes us.”

LATEST NEWS,IMAGES and VIDEOS,PRODUCTS and SERVICES,Truck and Bus

</pp:summary>

The future's green for the transport industry.

Operators are increasingly focused on sustainability, driven both by legislation and demand from their customers to balance the growing need for movement of goods with a more environmentally-friendly model. Uptime, mileage and fuel efficiency are being optimised, all while striving for reduced emissions. Increasingly green buying criteria are being put in place, with a renewed focused on selecting products and business partners that are as sustainable as possible. Every minute and penny counts.

An area which is regularly overlooked though, is the impact that tyres can have. In urban areas, truck tyres can be responsible for up to 20% of CO2 emissions. For fleets on long-haul motorway trips, that can leap to 35%. That’s why, at Goodyear, we work directly with OEMs and haulers to support their efforts towards sustainable transport. We’re constantly working on new technologies, intelligent designs and innovative materials, all to improve the environmental impact of our offering.

Low-rolling-resistance tyres

Low-rolling-resistance (LRR) tyres are often overlooked by the wider industry as a means of improving sustainability. By lowering rolling resistance as much as possible though, the emissions levels and fuel efficiency of the vehicle are directly impacted. That’s why, for us at Goodyear, they are a key focus area.

There are several different factors that can impact rolling resistance. As such, the production of this type of tyre is a complex process. We assess the design of the tread profile for ways of optimising the deformation caused by load and motion forces, as well as opportunities to use the most advanced raw materials. It might not sound like game-changing work, but the results are startling. A fleet of 100 trucks using an LRR range – such as the Goodyear FUELMAX GEN-2 – can lower its total cost of ownership by over £35,000 per year on fuel-costs; a saving which, of course, suggests an equally significant environmental impact1.

Tyre pressure monitoring systems

When we talk about sustainability and tyres, it’s impossible to understate the importance of proper maintenance. Keeping tyres at the correct pressure will not only reduce the chance of suffering a tyre-related breakdown, but will also further enhance rolling resistance, meaning the vehicle is likely to consume less fuel.

At Goodyear, we’ve developed smart algorithms that help to keep a close eye on tyre pressures. Advanced solutions such as the Goodyear Tyre Pressure Monitoring System report tyre pressures in real-time, sending an alert to the driver and the operational manager whenever the pressure is incorrect and indicating the gravity of the issue with a straightforward colour code, so the correct action can be taken. It might be that the tyre needs to be replaced right away or simply checked by a professional, either after the next delivery or at the next service appointment. Either way, the system will report it.

We have a great deal of faith in systems such as this, and their potential to make transport more sustainable. Many customers that have used our own system have spoken to us about the positive impact that it has had on both their carbon footprint and total cost of ownership.

Multiple life

Tyre innovation is rapidly accelerating, with some new solutions and materials, such as soybean, dandelion or even rice husk ashes, among the most unusual. One such development is our Multiple Life concept, which sees some truck tyres regrooved or even retreaded in order to extend their service lifetime and significantly reduce the number of tyres that need to be recycled.

There are multiple benefits to using a retreaded tyre. For one thing, they deliver up to 25% more mileage, while lowering the tyre costs by up to 30%.2 They also use significantly less oil, chemicals and other raw materials than a new tyre, and their production actually causes fewer emissions. All of this delivers a considerably more sustainable model of production.

Conclusion

An enormous amount of development goes into creating a tyre that ticks all of the boxes on the operational side and is still in line with – both current and future – sustainability regulations. Fleets need a tyre supplier that can bring real value, the right products and smart digital solutions.

At Goodyear, we’re at the forefront of this innovation, developing a range of next-generation products and solutions that address the evolving needs of the industry. Low-rolling-resistance tyres, for example, aren’t the be-all and end-all of sustainability. They’re a vital cog, supporting the improvement of the transport sector and contributing to a sustainable, profitable and carbon-neutral future.

It truly is incredible what difference a tyre can make.

LATEST NEWS,Goodyear,IMAGES and VIDEOS,PRODUCTS and SERVICES,Truck and Bus

Marc Preedy, Managing Director, Truck Replacement Sales, comments: “At Goodyear, we strive to be more than just a tyre manufacturer. We believe in being a partner to our customers, and Goodyear Total Mobility is how we achieve that. It’s a complete offering, allowing us to create bespoke packages that can consist of premium tyres, proactive maintenance, support for tyre-related breakdowns and digital solutions. By virtually exhibiting at the Commercial Motor Show, and earlier this month at the World Servitization Convention, we hope to demonstrate that we are here to help to keep fleets moving during these challenging times.”

In recent months, the flexibility offered by Goodyear Total Mobility has been vital. The spread of COVID-19 had a drastic impact, with some industries accelerating production to address a sudden spike in demand, while others have had to lower supply levels, either in response to a drop in market demand or to limit the spread of the virus.

Marc Preedy concludes: “COVID-19 has tested our customers like never before, and yet, there is still the everyday need to stay ahead of the game by running their operations in the most efficient and effective way. We’ve been glad that, so far, our customisable Goodyear Total Mobility offering has provided both the support and the flexibility that they need to do just that. Now, the message that we’re sending from the Commercial Motor Show is that we are there as an added value mobility partner. We want to show how we can drive results for transport and logistics companies, whether that means increasing uptime, reducing total cost of ownership or easing the total carbon footprint of their fleets.”

As part of this deal, Bretts Transport will be supplied with premium tyres from the FUELMAX GEN-2 range, and be supported by TruckForce, under the Goodyear Total Mobility offering.

Bretts is a Warehousing and Distribution specialist, founded in 1933, located in North Cambridgeshire. The company’s 246 vehicles will be fitted with the Goodyear FUELMAX GEN-2 tyre range. These steer and drive tyres deliver high fuel efficiency combined with enhanced mileage, for fleets engaged in inter-regional and long-haul operations, just like Bretts Transport.

The range also benefits from enhanced traction and reduced road noise emissions. FUELMAX GEN-2 tyres provide up to 10% improved mileage, 30% all-weather capability and less noise, but with the same high level of fuel efficiency as previous FUELMAX tyres.

These tyres also include radio frequency identification (RFID). An RFID tag is embedded inside the tyre to allow for identification and connectivity to tyre management and tracking systems. This increases tyre management efficiency, also acting as a deterrent to thieves as the tyres are easily traceable.

As well as tyre supply, Bretts will benefit from Goodyear’s national commercial vehicle support network, TruckForce. TruckForce technicians carry out thorough onsite tyre checks every quarter, and are on hand 24/7, 365 days a year, to provide roadside assistance and reactive tyre maintenance through Service Line 24hr. As a network, it specialises in the complete lifecycle management of commercial truck tyres, from preventive maintenance and tyre replacement, to regrooving and retreading.

Simon Brett, Managing Director at Bretts Transport, comments: “At Bretts, we have a large fleet of premium vehicles, and we aim to provide consistently high levels of service to our customers to enable them to grow with us. This partnership with Goodyear will enable us to continue with that, minimising down time and keeping us where we need to be for longer – on the road.”

Kate Norton, Sales General Manager Commercial UK & Ireland at Goodyear, comments: “We are delighted that Bretts Transport have chosen to use Goodyear’s premium tyres and services to improve their fleet productivity over the next five years. Goodyear Total Mobility is an offering that enables us to support national businesses like Bretts, reducing downtime with proactive monitoring and reactive maintenance.”

LATEST NEWS,IMAGES and VIDEOS,PRODUCTS and SERVICES,Truck and Bus

Goodyear Fleet Tracker is a very user-friendly smart application and provides a detailed mileage follow-up. A consequent follow-up of the remaining tread is enabling fleets and service providers to determine the right time to replace the tyres and proactively plan tyre maintenance without any downtime during operation. The smart device will also support fleets to run their operations more sustainably by extending the tyre lifetime and ensuring the tyre casing remains in optimal condition for retreading.

The solution also facilitates the tracing of vehicles on the road or assets in remote locations. The battery-powered device can be installed in any type of vehicle and will facilitate the management of trailers in particular. This accessible solution sends a GPS enabled signal that allows the fleet manager and service provider to improve the tracing of vehicles in operation or to locate a trailer parked for a longer time on a distant location.

Easily accessible technology

The Goodyear tracing solution includes an internal memory to store over 55 000 records and transfers the collected data to the cloud using the mobile network. In case a vehicle equipped with the device is out of range, the memory capacity is large enough to ensure no data is lost.

A build-in 3-axis accelerometer allows the system to enter ‘sleep mode’ and go into ultra-low power state, the technology will be reactivated when movement of the vehicle is detected.

By default, the GPS sends a signal every fifteen minutes, data upload will take place every two hours or when the vehicle stops or starts operation. The data transfer interval can be configurated to cater to specific needs of the fleet and type of transport. Goodyear’s powerful data technology systems will analyze the collected data.

The customer has access to detailed mileage and routing data per equipped vehicle via a customizable report and can follow the total fleet history with the help of a user-friendly dashboard on mobile and web applications.

The new Goodyear Fleet Tracker solution is the latest addition to Goodyear’s Total Mobility end-to-end offer including an extensive range of new and retreaded tyres developed to deliver enhanced performance in multiple applications, smart user-friendly tyre management solutions as well a trusted Pan-European 24/7 service network.

___________________________________

1 The 95% accuracy of the mentioned data may vary depending on the type of journey.
Robust design for high durability

The Dunlop SP247 is marked by a robust 5 or 6 rib design. Latest technology features include a strong and durable casing construction, deep sipes and a fuel-saving tread compound, high abrasion resistant tread compound.
The optimized rib layout is ensuring an even contact pressure distribution and shoulder robustness.

The sipes within the tread profile go up to two-third of the full tread depth so beyond the fifty percent worn stage. By creating additional biting edges, they interlock with the road surface providing an optimized grip performance, lasting until a late stage of the tyre life. A longer service life and high mileages is further enabled by the damage and wear resistance characteristics of the new product.

The chemical formulation and polymer network of the tread compound deliver lower energy or fuel consumption because of the well controlled rolling resistance during operation.

All-weather capability and 3PMSF marking

The new Dunlop SP247 provides extended all-weather capabilities with all sizes carrying both the M+S and Three Peak Mountain SnowFlake (3PMSF) symbols. Dunlop managed to meet the most stringent EU regulation requirements without any trade-off in other key performance areas such as short braking distances and improved wet grip throughout the tyre life, rolling resistance or mileage.

Progressive winter tyre regulations in Europe require 3PMSF marked products on trailer axles besides the steer and drive. As part of this deal, Maxi Haulage Ltd will be supplied with premium tyres from the KMAX GEN-2 range, and be supported by TruckForce, under the Goodyear Total Mobility offering.

Maxi Haulage is a leading provider of haulage, distribution and logistics services throughout the UK and Ireland, with over 45 years’ experience. Of the 160 trucks and nearly 700 trailers that it operates, 157 tractors and 672 trailers will be fitted with the Goodyear KMAX GEN-2 tyre range. These steer and drive tyres deliver premium mileage, enabling regional fleets, such as Maxi Haulage, to optimise tyre life and overcome challenging road conditions.

This range also benefits from low rolling resistance and optimised treadwear performance, both of which help to improve fuel efficiency. The KMAX-GEN 2 tyre range has 25% better all-weather capability, 15% more damage resistance and 5% higher fuel efficiency than its predecessor, all whilst maintaining its high mileage performance1.

An additional benefit is that the tyres include radio frequency identification (RFID). An RFID tag is embedded inside the tyre to allow for simple identification and connectivity to tyre management and tracking systems. This increases efficient tyre management, whilst helping to prevent tyre theft.

To improve tyre recyclability, Maxi Haulage Ltd will also be using Goodyear Next Tread technology. This innovative retreading solution means that old tyres can be retreaded using the Goodyear MoldCure process, and returned as a new Next Tread product. Fleets are aware of their tyre’s whole life history, helping them to get the most from the fleet’s tyres and also to reduce their CO2 emissions per km.

As well as tyre supply, Maxi Haulage Ltd will benefit from Goodyear’s national commercial vehicle support network, TruckForce. TruckForce technicians carry out thorough onsite tyre checks every quarter, and are on hand 24/7 to provide roadside assistance and reactive tyre maintenance through Service Line 24hr. As a network, it specialises in the complete lifecycle management of commercial truck tyres, from preventive maintenance and tyre replacement, to regrooving and retreading.

Andy McGuire, General Manager at Maxi Haulage, comments: “We aim to always go the extra mile for our customers, delivering the products and services they require whilst continually meeting the highest standards of quality and safety. Goodyear’s tyres will allow us to deliver this value, while having the trusted support of TruckForce will help to bolster the efficiency of our services, keeping our fleet moving to implement practical logistics solutions.”

David Howe, Commercial Sales Manager at Goodyear, comments: “Maxi Haulage Ltd is a veteran within the haulage industry, which is why we are so proud that they have chosen to use our products and services. Managing such a large fleet of commercial vehicles on an international level can be difficult, but we are confident that the quality of our premium tyres, and the support given by TruckForce, will make a difference.
<pp:caseid>388838</pp:caseid>

April 2020 – New research* by Goodyear Tyres has revealed that fewer than three-quarters (71%) of fleet managers feel tyres are a ‘very important’ area of investment, compared with fuel (81%) and repairs and maintenance (86%).

The research, which was conducted as part of a wider report into the transport industry**, also found that only a quarter (25%) of respondents have a single brand supply deal with a tyre manufacturer. Surprisingly, only one in five (21%) of these are motivated by lower total cost, and fewer still by financial predictability (11%). The majority (83%) of fleet managers who have a single brand supply deal cite the main benefit is improved reliability in operation; a crucial element to any fleet.

David Howe, Commercial Sales Manager at Goodyear, comments: “It’s interesting to see how few fleet managers have a single brand supply deal, given that such a deal will often allow access to a commercial support network, which will help to perform maintenance. Our own network - TruckForce - specialises in the complete lifecycle management of commercial truck tyres, including preventive maintenance, replacement, regrooving, and retreading. The network spans across the whole of the UK, with 13 hubs in total, which are individually responsible for different regions.”

“TruckForce is part of Goodyear Total Mobility, an end-to-end fleet offering that includes support from ServiceLine24h roadside assistance and FleetOnlineSolutions – Goodyear’s Internet-based fleet management system. This offering can provide vital assistance to fleets, as it comes with premium service, helps to keep drivers safe, fleets on the move and total cost of ownership down.”

Correct tyre maintenance plays a large role in keeping fleets moving. Surprisingly though, the research found that only one-in-three (33%) fleet managers – or those responsible for keeping commercial vehicle fleets compliant – check their tyre pressures on a daily basis. It seems that tread depth checks are deemed more important, with over half of respondents (55%) checking their tread depth daily.

David Howe continues: “Our TruckForce technicians conduct full tyre checks for customers on a quarterly basis, but we would always recommend that drivers visually check their tyre pressures at the start of each shift. This is because, if too high or low, incorrect pressures can result in rapid and irregular wear, or even blowouts, risking a significant amount of downtime and possible accidents. Running tyres at the correct pressure will lead to better wear across the tyre and even lower fuel consumption, due to better rolling resistance and handling.”

“The use of technology such as Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) can also help to prolong the tyre’s lifespan. Our own TPMS uses an in-tyre sensor to gather data and Goodyear’s unique G-Predict technology alerts the fleet manager to any tyre-related hazards via a mobile app. This predictive algorithm technology means managers can proactively take action to rectify any problems and prevent incidents from happening, avoiding prolonged downtime.”

“To put it simply, the research indicates that this kind of maintenance isn’t always at the top of most fleet managers’ list of priorities. But the cost savings and efficiency improvements that it can bring to the table mean that the higher up the agenda it is, the more fleets will benefit.”

Truck and Bus,LATEST NEWS,PRODUCTS and SERVICES

What makes a successful fleet manager?

<pp:caseid>388839</pp:caseid><pp:subtitle>By David Howe, Head of Commercial, Goodyear</pp:subtitle>

Working in an industry which is constantly looking for greater efficiency, cleaner operations and reduced expenditure can be challenging. Here at Goodyear, we work with some of the biggest commercial operators in the UK, and we know that fleet managers play a vital part in handling these evolving demands and challenges.

To better understand the work involved, I spoke to three of our partners about what challenges they’ve faced in their careers, their biggest successes, and what advice they would give to new fleet managers, or those who are simply new to the industry.

What are the biggest challenges fleet managers face?

According to Lee Downer, Fleet Manager at TJ Transport, the biggest challenge in terms of goods and services is getting value for money; a test that many fleet managers face. However, he has learnt to live by the mantra that “the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Working in such a rapidly evolving industry can undoubtedly come with challenges, but it’s important to be able to embrace change. This is particularly true of embracing developments in technology. For Paul Rymer, Fleet Manager at ECM (Vehicle Delivery Service) LTD, “working closely with all the manufacturers, sharing information and implementing new technologies and innovations to make sure we are getting the best from every product,” helps with the incorporation of new processes and technologies.

As an Engineering Fleet Manager, Gary Archer from PD Ports feels that “keeping up with legislation and compliance” is the most challenging part of being a fleet manager, while Paul speaks about “dealing with day to day problems such as breakdowns and serious incidents.”

There are a growing number of solutions to help managers tackle challenges like these, with our own Goodyear Total Mobility offering providing access to TruckForce, a 24/7 commercial support network that can carry out proactive maintenance and support fleets when tyre-related breakdowns occur. Gary believes that getting the whole team involved in these kind of new processes will make changes and improvements easier to implement, with the need for flexibility and patience from fleet managers becoming more important than ever.

As Lee says, “every day’s a school day!”

What makes a successful fleet manager?

Lee believes that what makes a successful fleet manager is building a sense of equality – “from the directors to the drivers” – which is something he frequently reminds his team of. Making them feel valued and part of a unit is something that will pay off. “It’s amazing how much more productive they become when you do,” he says.

But it’s not just about having a strong relationship with drivers. Lee also believes that “having a good rapport with service providers is key to getting a good service.” Whether it be by making regular contact or finding time for workshop visits, building strong relationships with external supporters can make life much easier. He says that “even taking the odd box of cakes along” is something that can help to establish a “firm, but friendly” working relationship. It’s “the team ethos that makes the success.”

Paul agrees that above all else, you have to be “supportive of the whole team.” In his 25 years’ experience, he has seen many changes within the industry, but credits keeping up with ECM’s ever-expanding fleet and workforce as one of his biggest successes.

What advice would you give to new fleet managers?

“As a fleet manager, it’s important for respect to be earnt, not commanded”, according to Lee. Manners play a big part, with simple things like ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ going a long way. When he was a young lorry driver himself, Lee recalls being asked, just as he was finishing his day, if he could take a lorry back out for just “one quick job”. Despite the horrible weather, he duly obliged, but always remembers his Transport Manager coming out in the pouring rain to say thanks and tell him that he appreciated his help. He says it’s something “I have never forgotten to this day.”

Making your staff feel fulfilled is an important part of managing a team. Lee says that “members of a team – drivers in particular – should always be listened to, as they are the ones out there trying to get the job done.” As such valuable assets to a transport company, helping out and going the extra mile for them can really pay off. Even if it’s just in small gestures, like helping to find a postcode or a petrol station.

Gary believes that your reputation is “your currency in this business.” It’s important that a manager takes care to uphold it. He also says that, ultimately, you “have to delegate, as you can’t do everything.” So, getting into the habit of managing your own time and that of others will help in this role. Having been in the transport industry for 42 years, he says that “I look forward to passing on my knowledge and experience to the younger generation.”

Truck and Bus,LATEST NEWS,PRODUCTS and SERVICES

TJ Transport Ltd is a leading bulk haulage provider, serving the construction, building materials and waste industries. For over 20 years, TJ Transport Ltd has operated through a network of quarries and wharves around the UK, providing an all-encompassing service for commercial customers.

As part of Goodyear Total Mobility, Goodyear Proactive Solutions will be used on the full TJ Transport Ltd fleet. This mobility solution continuously monitors tyre pressures and temperatures, alerting fleet managers to required maintenance and potential hazards ahead of time.

TruckForce will also be on hand to support the fleet. A 24/7 commercial vehicle support network, specialising in the lifecycle management of truck tyres, TruckForce has 13 hubs situated around the UK. TJ Transport Ltd.’s main TruckForce hub will be based in Southampton and will help with emergency callouts and everyday proactive maintenance. Goodyear Total Mobility also includes support from ServiceLine24h roadside assistance and FleetOnlineSolutions – Goodyear’s Internet-based fleet management system.

Within this agreement, the TJ Transport Ltd fleet will be supplied with the Goodyear OMNITRAC S D MSTII. This tyre is part of a new heavy-duty range for mixed service trucks operating under severe conditions. The new and improved range offers upgraded durability, efficiency, mileage and traction in all weather conditions.

The vehicles will benefit from DuraShield tyre technology, a top belt layer that provides extra resistance against casing damage caused by potholes and sharp stones, for example. The tyres also bear the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) marking, which establishes their performance and compliance with winter regulations.

The OMNITRAC S D MSTII tyre is also integrated with radio-frequency identification (RFID). The RFID tag is embedded inside the tyre to allow simple identification and connectivity to tyre management and tracking systems. It enables the tyre to communicate with a cloud-system, resulting in efficient tyre flow management.

Lee Downer, Fleet Manager at TJ Transport Ltd, comments: “It’s vital that our fleet is supported by a reliable and proactive solution to ensure our vehicles can achieve maximum capacity in the available working hours. I am confident that the services and products provided by Goodyear, with their various advancements in tyre technology, will ease the efficient and safe delivery of our products to the construction and building materials industry.”

David Howe, Commercial Sales Manager at Goodyear Tyres, comments: “We take pride in supporting many bulk haulage operators in increasing productivity and decreasing maintenance costs. That’s why we are so pleased to see TJ Transport Ltd embracing our Goodyear Total Mobility offering. Their fleet will be in the safe hands of our TruckForce technicians, who work tirelessly to ensure the safety and smooth operation of our customers’ fleets.”
