The tire was developed specifically for vehicles operating on inter-city and ‘park and ride’ routes for the growing commuter service requirements. In Europe, these routes are on the rise as local governments move to limit the amount of traffic in inner cities.

URBANMAX COMMUTER: Adapted to current requirements

The URBANMAX COMMUTER is Electric Drive Ready. Goodyear’s Electric Drive Ready philosophy means the company’s latest tires are fit for use on electric, hybrid and conventional diesel machines. This reduces operator stocking requirements and reduces complexity in tire management for fleet operators as the same tire can be used, whatever the motive power. What is more important, the tire is accommodating key requirements of electric vehicles which makes it a very good solution for fleets in transition from conventional to electrical drive concepts. For example, URBANMAX COMMUTER is providing excellent high load capacity1 - with 8t axle load capacity (load index 156/149) - which is required by modern electric buses.

As well as being optimised for the technical requirements of modern buses, the Goodyear URBANMAX COMMUTER is designed around the changing environment in Europe towards shorter public transport journeys and is helping to support the goal to reduce CO2 emissions. Park and ride services have enjoyed an upturn in popularity due to cities’ efforts to tackle congestion and improve air quality.

These journeys are characterised by less tread and sidewall wear than a typical inner-city bus, and distances between 20 and 100 kilometres, ideal for today’s EV buses. The URBANMAX COMMUTER features a stronger sidewall construction, leading to increased resistance to wear and damage. This enhances the sustainability and casing conservation of the tire, as well as giving passengers a more comfortable ride.

An RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag is embedded inside the URBANMAX COMMUTER. This helps service providers, dealers and fleet operators manage their tires more efficiently. Fleet managers are given accurate information on tire assets, performance and casing management. It also saves time on routine maintenance checks as data coming from the tire will alert any issues that require attention.

The tire also features ‘IntelliMax’ grooves to reduce tread wear and improve traction and stability. ‘Flexomatic’ sipes and interlocking tread blocks improve traction under braking. The 3D sipes interlock and limit block movement for high mileage and excellent winter traction. It is also 3PMSF (3-Peak Mountain Snowflake) certified for winter use, keeping people moving all year round.

The new tire can be fully retreaded, which brings additional benefits to fleets wishing

to take advantage of the URBANMAX COMMUTER. Its retreadability is another sustainable feature. This leads to extended tire life, as well as lower use of crude oil used in manufacturing2 and less landfill generated.

Public transport sees surge in popularity across Europe

Reports predict a surge in demand for bus and coach services over the next four years, with an average annual growth rate of 4.44% until 20273. Factors such as increasing demand for travel and tourism and government incentives are two reasons for the forecasted growth.

Much of the demand for inter-city transport comes from the post-pandemic trend of hybrid working. Fewer commuters are travelling into the city each day and, when they do, a larger proportion are choosing park and ride services in order to reduce their carbon footprint and avoid driving at peak times.

URBANMAX COMMUTER is designed specifically for the technical needs of modern, inter-city bus routes. It also carries Goodyear’s Electric Drive Ready label, making it suitable for the latest generation of buses. In the first half of 2022, zero emission buses accounted for 30% of bus sales in Europe4, highlighting the importance of tires that are ready for mainstream ZE routes. European regulators target the phasing out of new combustion engined buses by 2027.

Maciej Szymański, Marketing Director Commercial Europe, Goodyear, commented: “Goodyear expands its range with the URBANMAX COMMUTER after seeing a trend towards inter-city travel. The tire includes all the latest structural and technological innovations. Buses are an important part of decarbonizing Europe’s cities, and this tire gives an efficient platform for Zero Emission transport and provides grip no matter the season with its 3PMSF certified tread.”

1 8t axle load capacity (Load Index 156 = 4,000 kg/tire). The 2022 Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship season drew to a close in Jarama, Spain on 2nd October, the last of eight rounds.

A dominant Norbert Kiss won his fourth title in Goodyear FIA ETRC, with Teo Calvet fending off close competition to win the Goodyear FIA ETRC Promoter’s Cup.

The championship had some special highlights, including the 100,000 fans that packed out the Nürburgring in July, and the exciting races at Le Mans watched by 70,000 spectators, as Goodyear added to its illustrious history at the French circuit, which includes 14 overall wins in the car 24 hour race.

A total of 24 drivers representing four manufacturer teams competed in 2022, delighting fans with flat-out racing action.

The Goodyear tires performed exceptionally over the course of the season. The tyres are built using comparable carcass to commercial truck tyres, the tread and tread compound are modified to provide the needed grip on wet and dry conditions and to help deal with the heat generated by the drivers pushing the 5.3-tonne trucks to the limit at over 160 km/h.

Tires at the centre of Goodyear FIA ETRC’s sustainability push

Goodyear’s commitment to the championship means it will continue to work closely with the ETRA (European Truck Racing Association) and the FIA to introduce new technologies and innovations in the years to come to make further steps forward in sustainability. These will go towards continuing to make the championship competitive, exciting and sustainable.

The championship is committed to helping accelerate the transition to a sustainable future and has committed to reaching net zero by 2038 at the latest, a target outlined in the Paris Agreement. In transport, tires play a crucial role in lowering overall emissions with technology that lowers rolling resistance and methods of manufacturing that are kind to the environment.

The championship already made the shift to fully sustainable HVO biodiesel in 2021, and Goodyear’s racing tires are given an extended life through retreading, an identical service that is available to Goodyear’s commercial vehicle tyre customers across Europe. This means that the tires used in the Goodyear FIA ETRC are then retreaded into standard on-road products that can be used by transportation fleets.

Maciej Szymanski, Marketing Director for Commercial Europe, Goodyear said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in the Goodyear FIA ETRC for making this year such a success. From a Goodyear perspective, there are many parallels between the work that goes into creating the ultimate truck racing tire and a tire that delivers for fleet operators around Europe. The two worlds are dedicated to maximising results and extracting the most performance and efficiency from its vehicles. In this regard, we couldn’t be happier with the way these two areas of the Goodyear business support each other.”

“Goodyear and the ETRC share the same goal, which is to drive forward more sustainable solutions in the road haulage industry,” said ETRA Managing Director Georg Fuchs. “The series provides the perfect test lab for innovation and over the last few years we have already been able to provide valuable findings for Goodyear and their road relevant developments. The introduction of the retreading program is the next step towards a more sustainable future, and we are proud, that Goodyear road tires will carry a bit of the truck racing DNA in them” - he added.

Davide Califano, Head of Brand and Product Marketing for Commercial Europe, Goodyear, explains how the partnership between the championship and Goodyear is so valuable: “The activity we do on-track gives us an important advantage when it comes to researching and developing new specifications of truck tires. Using Goodyear FIA ETRC as a test bed has been invaluable to our development program. The insights we are able to discover allow us to work on a better product for both the track and the road.”

LATEST NEWS,Goodyear,Motorsport,Truck
