Goodyear develops its winter tires through a comprehensive research and development process combining virtual development and simulation, advanced laboratory research and real-world testing. At its Innovation Centre in Luxembourg, one of the industry’s largest teams of technicians, scientists and test drivers works to optimize tire compounds, materials, tread designs and sipe arrangements for challenging winter conditions.

The Centre’s high-tech Snow Lab enables engineers to recreate different types of snow and temperatures from 0°C to -40°C under controlled conditions. Using class-leading technologies including micro-computed tomography, 3D modelling and friction testing, engineers study how snow interacts with tire compounds and tread designs. This research complements testing on snow, ice, wet and dry surfaces at proving grounds in Switzerland, the Nordic region and New Zealand.

As a result of this rigorous development and testing culture, Goodyear’s award-winning⁵ winter tires have also been recognized by numerous independent magazine tests for their performance recently and over the years. Auto Bild named Goodyear Top Manufacturer of the Year 2025 in the winter tires category, citing the outstanding performance of the UltraGrip Performance 3 in its latest tests. Winter or All Season tires - Winter tires are specifically engineered to deliver optimal performance in cold temperatures and challenging winter conditions. This makes them the preferred choice for prolonged periods of cold weather, frequent snowfall or icy roads.

Premium all-weather tires, such as the Vector All Season 4 carrying the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) marking can provide a practical solution for areas with milder winters by offering year-round usability and convenience while meeting recognized snow-performance requirements.

What to look out for - In Europe, tires approved for winter use can typically be identified by the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, which indicates that the tire has met recognized snow-performance testing requirements. Designed for extreme winter conditions, the UltraGrip Arctic 2 has been updated to reduce road wear[1] and comply with the new Traficom A+ requirement[2], which will apply to all newly produced studded passenger car tires from 1 January 2027. The update introduces a new stud pin geometry while retaining the same number of studs, without compromising the trusted winter performance that drivers rely on.

As part of this evolution, Goodyear is also simplifying the product naming. Going forward, the UltraGrip Arctic 2 name will cover all sizes, with the previous SUV product line designation discontinued, creating a clearer and more streamlined portfolio.

The updated tires will be clearly identifiable, featuring a Traficom A+ sticker. In addition, the updated UltraGrip Arctic 2 range will also comply with the latest UNECE regulation[3]. As such, the tires will feature three additional sidewall markings: An updated 3PMSF symbol including the “Ш” character, Ice symbol and the word “STUDDED”, enhancing transparency and regulatory alignment across markets.

Importantly, these updates underline Goodyear’s ability to meet new regulatory demands while maintaining the trusted winter performance of the UltraGrip Arctic 2, preserving its strong reputation for grip, control and reliability on ice and snow also in the future.

The 2026 edition of the Dakar Rally once again pushed teams to their limits, with ultra-demanding terrain, long specials and changing conditions testing endurance and vehicle management. Following rocky tracks, dunes and fast desert sections, Team De Rooy achieved an impressive result.

Winter tires play a crucial role in cold weather driving, providing reliable grip and shorter braking distances when temperatures fall below 7°C. They are engineered with special rubber compounds and tread patterns to channel away water, reduce aquaplaning and maintain traction on snow and ice.

Your Guide to Winter Tires in Europe

With new legislation updates for 2025, it’s essential to know the rules of your destination. Here’s what you need to know about winter tires across Europe this winter¹:

France

From 1 November to 31 March, winter tire rules are in place across mountainous regions, subject to decisions by local authorities. This area covers 34 French départements and mountain ranges such as the Alps, the Massif Central and the Pyrenees.

Winter and all-season tires with 3PMSF marking meet the legal requirement, with one exception for trailer tires on commercial vehicles. Studded tires are allowed on passenger vehicles only, whilst chains or snow socks can be used if mounted on the drive axle.

Germany

There is no fixed calendar period for winter tire use in Germany and so drivers are only legally mandated to fit winter tires if the weather conditions require it.

Vehicles must be equipped with 3PMSF-marked tires, and studded tires are not permitted for either passenger or commercial vehicles.

Italy 

Winter tire requirements in Italy are based on road signs, with obligations enforced from 15 November to 15 April and in wintry conditions². Tires with M+S marking and at least 1.6mm tread are permitted.

Chains must be available in the vehicle if snow tires are not mounted when driving on roads with signs. Passenger vehicles are permitted to use studded tires, which can improve grip on icy or snowy roads. There is also a one month period either side of November and April for mounting and dismounting winter tires.

Spain 

Winter tires or snow chains are mandatory where indicated by road signs. Studded tires are allowed on passenger and commercial vehicles during the winter period which is from the last Saturday before November (25 October 2025) to the last Sunday in March (29 March 2026). 3PMSF-marked tires are also permitted for both vehicle types.

Additionally, buses must display a sign showing they are equipped with winter tires.

Sweden

With new legislation effective from 1 November 2025, Sweden will extend the period during which winter tires are mandatory on heavy duty vehicles from 10 November to 10 April, regardless of road conditions.

For passenger vehicles, from 1 December to 31 March winter tires must be fitted. Approved tire options include 3PMSF or studded tires with a minimum tread depth of 3mm. For vehicles with studded tires, trailers must also be similarly equipped. M+S tires are allowed on trailers for passenger and commercial vehicles in a transitional period until 2028.

Elsewhere in Europe 

Countries who mandate the use of winter tires during set time periods include Andorra, Armenia, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Russia, Slovenia and Turkey.

Countries who mandate the use of winter tires only in wintry conditions or those weather conditions in a set time period include Austria, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Moldova, Norway, Romania, Serbia and Slovakia.

There is no legal requirement to fit winter tires in Albania, Belgium, Cyprus, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.

Decoding Winter Tire Symbols

Winter tires are usually marked with the M+S symbol and/or the ‘Alpine’ symbol (3-Peak Mountain Snow Flake, or 3PMSF). A tire with M+S marking features tread design, rubber compound and construction tailored to provide better performance in mud and snow compared to standard tires.

Tires with the 3PMSF symbol have passed a dedicated snow grip test and meet official UN standards (Regulation No. 117)³. Many European countries now require 3PMSF-approved tires for winter driving, reflecting their proven safety benefits.

A visit to the Goodyear Innovation Centre

The development of an all-season tire requires the precise coordination of many factors and involves several phases: from concept development including tire construction, cavity shape, tread pattern design and tread compounds, to the testing and finetuning of these critical components resulting in a perfectly balanced tire. The all-season tire combines elements from the tread pattern, the sipe structure, the groove arrangement and the sidewalls of summer and winter tires to ensure balanced performance in changing weather conditions.

Much more than rubber and soot

Only the tread compound for the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 consists of up to 17 components,  for example, synthetic rubbers which provide excellent grip and wear performance. Silica and traction resins offer outstanding grip, and braking performance in rainy weather. Other components include carbon black, sulphur, wax, and antioxidants, as well as sunflower oil, which increases the flexibility of the rubber. "The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3's adaptive rubber compound ensures that the tire remains flexible at different temperatures and offers reliable performance and outstanding mileage in a wide range of conditions. It actually represents a category of its own, connecting the best of two worlds", says Goodyear's compounding engineer Chris Kaes.

Developed in the winter laboratory

In the winter laboratory, Goodyear engineers produce different types of snow to test different rubber compounds and sipe structures on them. For example, the braking distance varies considerably depending on the nature of the snow and ice. The test of the Vector 4Seasons compound on a metal plate compacted with snow shows that the pure rubber compound already provides strong grip. Combined with the special 3D sipes on the centre of the tread, the Snow Grip technology ensures excellent grip on snow. Only around 63% of the rubber has direct contact with the road; the grooves of the remaining percent drain water and offer protection against aquaplaning or indirectly provide grip.

Eight times around the world

Before a Goodyear tire goes into series production, it has circled the earth eight times, on the road or on the roller test bench, and undergone 3,800 development tests. On the in-house test track, the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 showed how effectively the dry handling technology developed for the premium all-season tire works. This includes reinforced tread and shoulder blocks that reduce the deformation of the tire under high loads, such as during sporty driving in dry conditions. The result: short braking and very good grip on dry roads.

When it comes to purchasing a set of brand-new tires, many more drivers now opt for a set of all-season tires, which are excellent all-rounders that suit a wide range of drivers and cars. Still, there are misconceptions about these tires that aren’t true, particularly after so many years of research has accelerated their development and performance. 

Dunlop’s next-generation All Season 2 tire is a good example of the improvements in the latest all-season tires. With its latest tire, which is the result of 18 months of research and development, Dunlop brings to the market an advanced product that helps drivers handle all-year weather conditions. This ensures that drivers on the road feel prepared without the extra inconvenience of having to change tires with the seasons. 

The tire industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in the demand for all-season tires in recent years: from 2019 to 2023, the all-season tire segment experienced a growth rate of 66% in Europe¹.  Despite this, certain myths about all-season tires remain popular. Here are five facts you should know before buying all-season tires:  

1. Myth: All-season tires wear out quickly 
Fact: The latest tire technologies provide strong mileage   

One major consideration when buying tires is how long they are going to last. Thanks to the latest developments in all-season tire technology, they now provide high mileage alongside all-season performance. Dunlop All Season 2, the newest addition to the Dunlop portfolio, is a good example. This specific model features an optimized design that helps increase mileage by evenly distributing weight across the tire’s contact patch, delivering a more uniform pressure distribution for long-lasting treadwear.

Dunlop All Season 2 has recently achieved a successful magazine test debut being awarded “Eco-Master” and “best” in mileage to rank overall “good” in the latest Auto Bild all-season tire test². Editors praised the tire for “balanced good performance level without serious weaknesses” and “best mileage in the test”. 

2. Myth: All-season tires can’t handle winter conditions  
Fact: All-season tires are certified for use on snow    

All-season tires are marked with the same industry-standard 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) label as winter tires. This means they meet all the necessary requirements to be driven on snow. To qualify for this certification, winter and all-season tires like Dunlop All Season 2 are tested in line with industry regulations.

To achieve this, Dunlop has developed 3D blades across the tire’s tread which is a key design feature resulting in increased stiffness as well as biting edges for better snow traction, thus providing effective braking in all weather conditions. Dunlop All Season 2 also features an optimized carcass shape using robust structural materials to increase stability. This feature enhances handling on wet as well as on dry roads.  

Dunlop recommends all-season tires for milder winter conditions; winter tires are best for severe snow and ice. This recommendation aligns with findings from a recent Ipsos study conducted on behalf of Goodyear³, which revealed that almost two-thirds of European drivers perceive winter tires as better for grip and braking on snowy and icy roads.  

3. Myth: Grip in summer suffers with all-season tires  
Fact: All-season tires achieve excellent handling in summer   

In contrast to the previous myth, some drivers actually have the misconception that all-season tires only perform well in winter. With the latest technologies, modern all-season tires represent a huge step forward, delivering great dry performance as well as winter grip. This means drivers won’t be left wanting more on long summer road trips. They can feel confident and prepared, knowing that their tires are developed for use in all weather conditions.  

4. Myth: Only small city cars can be fitted with all-season tires 
Fact: All-season tires fit most vehicles   

Many drivers still consider all-season tires to be best on small compact vehicles, which isn’t the case. Dunlop All Season 2 is available in sizes ranging between 14 and 19 inches and is ready to support larger vehicles as each tire size is developed with a carcass tuned to the specific application it will encounter.    

5. Myth: All-season tires are “just a compromise”
Fact: The latest-generation all-season tires offer well-balanced performance all year long  

As the technology enabling all-season tires has matured over years, more and more drivers across Europe are using them³, recognising them as an attractive alternative to changing between summer and winter tires. Dunlop recommends all-season tires especially for consumers who are mainly city drivers living in non-mountainous or less severe winter areas. Modern all-season tires are designed to provide balanced and effective performance in a variety of conditions, making them suitable for year-round. Drivers don’t have to switch between summer and winter sets, which alleviates some of the stress of car ownership allowing them to feel more prepared for a range of a weather conditions.

European drivers who use premium winter tires during the colder months report significantly higher confidence and comfort over those with tires from non-premium brands, a recent study has found, underlining that choosing the right tire is one of the most important things drivers can do to prepare for winter conditions. 

According to the report, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Goodyear¹, 65% of drivers with winter tires from a premium brand are confident driving in the winter, a considerable improvement compared to drivers with non-premium tires (54%). The data suggests that the benefits of investing in a premium brand tire should not be ignored by drivers, especially in more challenging winter conditions. 

These findings are particularly relevant for people who are passionate about driving and enjoy driving even in harsh weather to make the most of their vehicle. The study found that this profile of drivers, who tend to be much younger compared to the average car owner, already report a higher level of confidence driving in winter conditions and tend to encounter fewer conditions that make them uncomfortable. 

A straightforward improvement to unlock winter driving potential 

While usage of winter tires is consistent across age groups, younger drivers are twice as likely to consider them than drivers aged over 45. Despite this, just under three in ten drivers aged 18-34 aren’t actively considering winter tires, which could be due to some of the most common misconceptions associated with them. 

Amongst the common beliefs that put drivers off changing to winter tires are a concern about the inconvenience of switching and a belief that current climate conditions render them unnecessary. 

While the winter tire segment is expected to decline by an estimated 1.6% each year by 2029², due to milder winters and advances in all-season tire technology and capability, winter tires do remain the best choice for many drivers, due to the prevalence of wintery conditions in many countries across the continent. As reported by drivers who use them, winter tires remain the most capable in snow and ice, and more than half of European drivers still report encountering these conditions when driving. As such, even as we experience slightly milder winters, most European drivers still find themselves driving in conditions where they would feel more comfortable with winter tires.

Goodyear offers winter driving advice to be ready for the colder months 

The survey found that, in general, drivers across Europe are aware that they need to take different precautions when driving in winter conditions. Three in four drivers often practice safe driving techniques in the winter, and more than four in five regularly check the weather forecast before setting out. However, fewer drivers go further than this by taking more steps to prepare for the conditions. 

There are a number of things drivers can do to help their preparation for winter driving and boost their confidence venturing out even in snow, heavy rain or ice. Here are some of Goodyear’s top tips: 

• Check the law. In some regions, winter tires are a legal requirement during certain times of the year. Goodyear’s guide to driving in winter can help explain the rules if you’re planning a winter road trip across borders, but drivers should always check with the relevant authority in each country to determine the most up-to-date winter tire rules. 
• Choose the right tires. To comply with regulations or increase your driving confidence, make sure you choose tires with the right certifications. The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) logo indicates that tires meet winter performance standards. All tires in Goodyear’s winter range meet the relevant criteria for this mark. 
• Install winter tires early. Get ahead of the season and make sure you’ve fitted winter tires in time for the first cold weather. If in doubt, Goodyear recommends the ‘7 degrees rule’; winter tires are your best choice in any weather conditions below 7ºC, even if there is no snow or ice. 
• Check tire pressure and condition. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for tire pressure and remember that cold weather can reduce the pressure. Regularly check your tire pressures and tread depth, along with a visual inspection of the tire to ensure they are free of any cracks or damage. 
• Check the car before setting out. Scrape the windows clear of snow and ice and use your heating to make sure they are free of condensation to aid visibility, just as brushing snow off the outside of your headlights will. If there is a large amount of snow on the roof of your car, brush that off too, as it can be dangerous if it falls off while driving, potentially blocking visibility. Check the washer fluid levels and keep in mind that different products can be used to prevent it freezing. 
• Drive with extra caution. When on the road, keep additional distance to the car in front to give you more time to react and slow down, especially as stopping distances can be up to ten times longer on icy roads.  
• Take it easy. Don’t go too hard on the pedals, either: hitting the accelerator or brake too hard can reduce your control. Adjust your speed to the prevailing weather conditions: sometimes it may not be safe to drive the posted speed limit, so exercise caution and good judgement.

European drivers have positive views on many aspects of all-season tire usage in milder winter conditions, according to an Ipsos survey conducted on behalf of the Goodyear group which recently launched its next-generation Dunlop All Season 2 tire. The study, conducted in seven European countries¹, showed that all-season and winter tires are perceived by a meaningful group of drivers as delivering equally well on “safety while driving”, “comfort while driving” and “mileage”.  

Key drivers to all-season tire popularity 

All-season tires offer a good balance between summer and winter tires, with technology that enables them to perform well all year round, in a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures.   

The study showed that winter tires are perceived as better for grip and braking on snowy and icy roads, with almost two-thirds of respondents declaring such a view. This comes in line with Dunlop’s recommendation for drivers to use winter tires in severe winter conditions.  

Asked about opinion on other aspects - such as performance on wet and dry roads, mileage, safety and comfort while driving – a meaningful group of drivers shared positive views on all-season tires: 

• When it comes to grip and braking on wet roads, the study shows that one third (34%) of surveyed drivers perceive all-season tires as good as winter tires.   
• When referring to grip and braking on dry roads, more than two thirds (68%) said that all-season tires were equally good or better than winter tires. 
• More than one third (36%) of drivers believe that “safety while driving” and “comfort while driving” on all-season tires are equally good as for winter tires. For mileage, 31% of respondents assess it as “equally good”.    

A growing and maturing segment  

The all-season tire segment is projected to grow by an estimated 6.7% each year between 2024 and 2029, while the value all-season segment, which includes Dunlop All-Season 2, is projected to grow even more by an estimated 9.1% in the same period².

This type of tire is an attractive option for drivers who want to skip seasonal tire swaps and save time and money by avoiding the cost of replacement and storage. The study found that most European drivers have neutral or slightly positive experiences when changing tires, but a significant proportion (1 out of 4) have negative experiences which might nudge them towards all-season tires.   

The all-season segment growth also correlates to the overall technological improvements being made in the sector. Dunlop All Season 2 is the result of more than 12,500 hours of research and development during an 18-month evolution process and is packed with innovative technologies that provide competitive performance and mileage. The technology behind the tire  

There are three main elements that underline the advanced technology in Dunlop All Season 2:  

• 3D Blading is a key design feature that enables an increased stiffness across both wet and dry braking and provides numerous biting edges for better traction on snow.  
• Optimized carcass shape using robust structural materials to increase stability – this feature enhances handling on wet as well as on dry roads.   
• Optimized footprint: Tire contact patch is optimized to deliver a more uniform pressure distribution and long-lasting treadwear.  

The supply of Dunlop All Season 2 began in February, and the new tire will be gradually available throughout 2024 in 59 SKUs, ranging from 14 to 19 inches.

Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 has been crowned the winner of ADAC’s latest winter tire test, earning the highest “good” rating among 16 competing winter tires tested in the compact SUV segment.

Conducted by ADAC, Europe’s largest automobile association, in collaboration with its Austrian and Swiss counterparts ÖAMTC and TCS, the evaluation assessed the tires’ safety and performance in snow, wet, and dry conditions, as well as their environmental impact. The test was carried out with a Volkswagen T-Roc equipped with the popular 215/55R17 UltraGrip Performance 3. 

In the test report, Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 stood out for its “safe and precise driving characteristics” on dry, wet, and winter roads, delivering “very high predicted mileage, low abrasion, and excellent efficiency, with no notable weaknesses.” Its exceptional performance across all testing criteria earned it the highest overall score.

Helps fleets comply with EU regulations for TPMS

The launch of Goodyear TPMS Connect comes at the right time. The system complies with the EU's latest regulations for TPMS, which require all new motor vehicles, including trucks, trailers, and vans, to be equipped with TPMS that accurately measures and transmits tire pressure information to the driver.

Many fleets are equipped with standard TPMS from original equipment manufacturers (OEM), and these systems can limit the visibility of notifications so that only drivers see them. Goodyear’s Audi Q6 e-tron fitments come from its Eagle F1 Asymmetric and UltraGrip ranges for summer and winter applications, respectively. The approved fitments will fit multiple trim levels, with Goodyear’s SKUs ranging from 18” to 21”. Goodyear collaborated closely with Audi throughout the modelling and testing phases of tire development, resulting in fitments specifically tailored to enhance the vehicle’s performance.

The new Q6 e-tron was required to meet specific exterior noise standards in order to achieve homologation to new regulations that mandated a reduction of 2 dB¹. This necessitated tire development that lowered road noise. Goodyear supported Audi’s targets by tailoring the tread design and tuning the construction of the OE tires.

Furthermore, Goodyear developed specific tire specifications for each axle, allowing the performance characteristics of each to be tuned individually and resulting in excellent cornering stability and handling behaviour.

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 has become the first all-season tire to ever receive a ‘Good’ rating in an ADAC tire test, having won the German organisation’s 16-inch all-season tire test published this week. 

ADAC, Europe’s largest automobile association, in collaboration with its Austrian and Swiss counterparts ÖAMTC and TCS, tested 16 all-season tires in terms of safety on snow, wet and dry conditions, as well as environmental balance. The test was carried out on Volkswagen Golf with the popular 205/55 R16 fitment. 

Awarding Goodyear’s all-season tire first place in the ranking, ADAC’s testers remarked on a “well-tuned”¹ tire without “glaring weaknesses in any area” ¹, whilst noting good results on wet and wintry roads². Good environmental balance, determined by high efficiency, low tire wear and an above-average predicted mileage was integral for its victory. 

Indeed, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 proved best in mileage achieving 67,000 km, which is 45.6% more than the worst-performing candidate in the test in terms of mileage.

Since 2017, LIST and Goodyear have worked together to achieve pioneering results in materials research, structure-property relationship understanding, and data science. Their joint efforts have positioned Luxembourg as a hub for disruptive innovation in mobility, particularly in the tire and tire-related technology sectors. 

At last year’s LIST Tech Day, the two entities had sealed the agreement for a second phase of their partnership capitalizing on Goodyear’s and LIST's expertise, infrastructure, and competencies to drive innovation and technology to a new application domain.

Focus on sustainability and digitalization 

The new contract encompasses strategic programmes comprising more than 30 projects. Spanning six years, this new contract places significant emphasis on advancing efforts focused on sustainability and digitalization within the tire industry. In terms of sustainability, the focus will be on tire products developed with bio-based and recyclable materials. As for digitalization, the spotlights will be on data science and its application for accelerating sensor prototyping timeline and efficacy. The partnership will also focus on the development of sensors capable of real-time monitoring of tire wear, aimed at enhancing safety and facilitating maintenance procedures. Additionally, efforts will be dedicated to research and development in energy harvesting and storage for wireless sensors, ensuring their durability and efficiency over time. 

Supported by the Ministry of Economy and the Industrial Partnership Block Grants (IPBG) initiative of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), this second phase of the partnership is expected to kick off by the end of April.

Strategic research programmes 

Data Science for Tire Applications - At the forefront of the digital transition, this programme aims to fit within Goodyear’s “first time right” development objective. Data Program will help Goodyear engineers develop, test and validate tire models early in the development cycle, with the goal of identifying the best performing tires before building a first prototype. 

• Tire Sensor Technology - This programme will help develop materials-based sensing technology to aid Goodyear in embedding sensors for continuous tire monitoring.
• End-of-Life Tires – This programme targets the exploration and potential development of new materials and processing technology to help improve the reuse of end-of-life tires
• Sustainable Materials - Material development programmes are designed to investigate new raw materials that could be used in all kinds of tire architectures
• Structure-Process-Property Relationships - This programme will deliver new tools to better understand complex correlations of characterization results and material performance.

Additionally, LIST and Goodyear have already identified several potential fields of interest for future collaboration.

The new All Season 2 is designed to fit a range of modern vehicles, such as popular city cars and SUVs. It answers the needs of drivers who look for state-of-the-art products from a manufacturer adept at developing tires that offer outstanding performance and boast extended longevity.

Supply began in February, and the new all-season tire will be gradually available during 2024 in 59 SKUs between 14 and 19 inches.

Reliable performance in all weather conditions

More than 12,500 hours of research and development were spent on the tire over an 18-month period, which included a mix of on-road and simulated tests.

This detailed development process results in the All Season 2 boasting excellent performance and offering good value for money, being defined as one of the key priorities by 51% of drivers as concluded in a recent consumer study².

Pushing the limits of performance from a fully road-legal tire, Goodyear has developed a two-tire range for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The unique high-friction compound of the SuperSport RS provides a refined track-focused experience in dry conditions, while excellent cornering stability is achieved by bridges in the tread pattern’s inner groove, optimizing the tire’s footprint for more consistent pressure distribution.

Meanwhile, the Eagle F1 SuperSport R is an ultra-ultra high-performance tire with greater scope for road usability. Like the SuperSport RS, performance is its primary function and gives Porsche 911 GT3 RS buyers an option to select the most suitable tire depending on their driving habits.

With a large variety of tire choices available on the market, it's crucial for drivers to recognize the significant performance disparities among them. The choice of tires can dramatically affect braking distances, with disparities of up to 15 meters on wet roads at 80 km/h and seven meters on dry surfaces at 100 km/h ¹. While the upfront cost of investing in high-quality summer tires may appear significant, the long-term benefits encompass not only improved performance and comfort but also substantial savings. ³ 

Drive twice the kilometers 

The German automotive publication Auto Bild compared the mileage of 20 summer tires, ranking the premium Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 first with 63,200 km. This is more than double the km you can drive with the tire ranked last in the test. ²    

Auto Bild also compared the price/1,000 km mileage of 20 summer tires, with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 being the cheapest tire for € 8.70/1,000 km. That is around 50% less than the average of the price/1,000 km of the last seven ranked tires (€ 16.14). ³ 

This translates to a saving of around 50% for every 1,000 km travelled. 

Ready for electric vehicles  

Modern high-quality summer tires are also optimized for the special needs of electric vehicles. In fact, all Goodyear tires are designed to be suitable for use with both electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional combustion engine vehicles. 

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 summer tire incorporates innovative features to manage the increased weight and higher torque typical of EVs, while an innovative noise-cancelling tread pattern reduces cabin noise.⁴ 

Superb comfort 

Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology can half interior car noise (up to 4 dB),⁴ making the tire a perfect fit for EVs as tire and road noises are the dominant interior sounds in most EVs.  

In addition, drivers benefit from outstanding comfort provided by cutting-edge features like the Goodyear’s SealTech technology which seals tread penetrations up to 5 mm in diameter. Selected sizes of the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 are available with this additional attribute. 

Award-winning performance boosts driving experience 

The Goodyear summer tire Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has achieved numerous awards. In 2023, Auto Bild awarded the tire ‘Eco-Master’, and Goodyear ‘Top Manufacturer of Summer Tires’ for the second consecutive year.¹

Summer tires are recommended in summer instead of winter tires 

When the temperatures rise in spring Goodyear recommends drivers changing to a summer equipment for their cars. Latest tests prove that wet braking from 80 km/h at 15°C with winter tires results in around two meters of extra braking distance compared to summer tires. ⁵   

Also, the German ADAC recommends replacing winter tires with summer tires at summer temperatures because of the increased risk of accidents.⁶ 

“The warmer the temperature, the larger the performance difference”, Laurent Colantonio, Regional Technology Director EMEA, Goodyear explains. “Driving with winter tires in summer causes differences in the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, while the specific compounds and design used in summer tires guarantee an optimal wear rate, with positive impact on mileage, efficiency and sustainability.” 

Tire maintenance tips  

Only with the right maintenance drivers get the most out of their premium tires and can even save money in the long run. 

• Inspect tires regularly for damage and ensure they meet the minimum legal tread depth required. Worn tires particularly suffer in wet conditions as the tread designed to evacuate water is worn away. 
• Pressure checks should be conducted once a month. Underinflated tires will not only cause your vehicle to use more fuel, but also increase wear and, in extreme cases, cause tire failure. Always follow manufacturer guidance on tire pressure. This information can be found in the car’s handbook. Never use tires below the recommended load index. 
• Avoid contact with kerbs and potholes where possible. Furthermore, finding the most efficient route and smooth driving will increase tire life and boost fuel economy.

The new Citroën ë-C3 is the first all European designed and built affordable small car without any compromise on quality, experience and comfort.

The European car market continues to evolve towards SUVs, with the transition to EV and hybrid powertrains accelerating the growth. After completing a comprehensive industry analysis and consumer segmentation study across Europe, Goodyear has unveiled plans to invest in and strengthen its portfolio of consumer brands, with a stronger premium role for Goodyear and redefined roles for its other brands, including Dunlop.

The objective is to strengthen Goodyear’s group position and expand its market coverage, thus offering a more complementary and competitive brand and product portfolio to address the industry trends and the different consumer profiles identified through the research. The new approach will enable Goodyear to work smarter with its network of distributors and retailers to maximize growth together, with product performance and brand power at the epicenter. 

Industry tiering trends

The industry tiering trends in the European market are predicted to undergo a significant shift between 2023 and 2028. The tier 2 and tier 3 segments are anticipated to experience growth, potentially at the expense of the tier 1 segment during this period. This trend is primarily attributed to inflationary pressures impacting consumer preferences and purchasing behavior.

Specifically, the tier 2 segment is projected to exhibit substantial growth, estimated to range between 2 and 3% by 2028. This growth signifies an increasing demand within this segment and highlights its potential to attract consumers seeking value-driven options without compromising quality.

Despite an anticipated slight decrease in volumes, the premium tier is expected to maintain its prominence as the primary revenue driver within the market. This is particularly evident in the higher rim size categories. The enduring strength of the premium tier underscores the continued appeal and perceived value of premium offerings among consumers, even in the face of evolving market dynamics.

Research highlights

The objective of the study was to gain an in-depth insight into consumers' perspectives on mobility, their perception of tire brands, and the criteria that guide purchasers’ decision-making. By synthesizing the insights gained from our research with industry trends, our goal is to curate the best possible product and portfolio choices for our customers, ensuring that they receive offerings tailored to their preferences and needs.

The key findings highlight:

• 74% of consumers consider tires as highly important and not as a commodity as per a commonly held misconception. 
• Brand awareness and reputation are the primary factors influencing consumer tire choices. 
• Consumers have different needs and preference when choosing tires in terms of features and benefits.

Brand awareness and reputation are the primary factors influencing consumer tire choices with 35% of responses. This is followed by personal prior experiences (25%), tire test results conducted by external entities such as specialized magazines (24%), and advice received from dealers (23%).

35% of consumers base their choices on tire performance, 51% prioritize tires that offer an optimal balance between quality and price and 14% of consumers are price-sensitive in their tire selection.

A complementary and competitive portfolio of brands and products      

Goodyear has defined clear roles for its brands to address different consumer profiles, to offer its most competitive portfolio of premium, value, and budget brands that can meet the needs of any type of consumer in an evolving market.

• The Goodyear brand will stand alone with a unique premium positioning, for consumers who want to upgrade their driving experience. As the fastest growing premium brand in Europe, its current range offers its strongest ever tire lineup. Goodyear will continue to offer award-winning products like the Vector 4Seasons, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and UltraGrip Performance 3, featuring cutting-edge technologies and innovations.
• Dunlop will receive renewed focus and investment as a strategic player within the high-end value segment of the market, appealing to drivers looking for long-lasting quality at a fair price. Its repositioning makes it the strongest brand in this segment by awareness and purchase consideration, as demonstrated by the same consumer research. The Dunlop car tire range will expand to cover 84% of the market from 2024 with summer, winter and all-season products.

For drivers seeking affordable and durable tires, the company will offer brands such as Fulda, Avon, Dębica, Sava and Cooper. 

• Avon and Fulda will continue to be available across Europe and keep their significant role in the low-end value segment in the UK and in Germany respectively, where they hold considerable history and recognition in the value tier. 
• Dębica and Sava will continue to be available across Europe and keep their key role in the budget segment in the Eastern European countries. 
• Cooper Tires will have a long-term focus on 4x4 vehicle fitments, continuing its strong off-road position.

Two new products will be available: Dunlop Econodrive AS (all-season) and Dunlop Econodrive Winter, expanding the existing Dunlop Econodrive light truck  range which includes summer tires Dunlop Econodrive and Dunlop Econodrive LT. With an expansion to its portfolio, Dunlop is positioned to compete in the value segment of the light truck tire market with its most competitive lineup of products to date.  

The move to strengthen its light truck offering comes from market research data that forecasts that the value segment of light truck tire market will grow by 9.3% by 2028¹.

Dunlop has developed a tread pattern with a distinctive ‘V’ shape, which enhances water evacuation for reliable handling. Meanwhile, the centre grooves function to catch and grip to snow when in motion. 

The tire’s tread block is also strengthened by connectors between them, which maintains the tire’s structural rigidity, helping lower abrasion and increase mileage.

The new label, which will be introduced on the sidewall of all new replacement tires from the beginning of 2024, is designed to ensure drivers have full confidence in selecting the optimal tires for their vehicle, regardless of its powertrain. It also helps dealers to streamline their sales processes and reduce inventory complexities, as it will also be featured in PriCat and the Goodyear system MyWay to facilitate customer identification.

Goodyear’s suite of tire technologies

Electric mobility is booming. S&P Global projects that 97% of new vehicle production in Europe will be at least partially electrified by 2029 with 61% of these being fully electric¹. This trend means that the majority of new road car launches in Europe are likely to be electric vehicles (EV) within a decade, so naturally Goodyear will be at the forefront of such developments.

To ensure that EV drivers experience optimum performance, reduced noise, and extended tire life, Goodyear has developed a toolkit of technologies designed to complement EVs, as well as vehicles with other powertrains.

Among these innovations is SoundComfort Technology, which ensures reduced interior noise created by tire/road interaction in quiet EVs. This technology has the potential to reduce interior noise by up to 50%², which is crucial to ensure a quiet, comfortable journey in an electric vehicle.

Moreover, the added weight and increased torque of EVs means the wear on EV tires can be much more substantial compared to traditional combustion vehicles. Goodyear’s Mileage Plus Technology offers drivers the opportunity to maximize the life of their tires, and travel further with each set. 

Goodyear’s low rolling resistance technologies also contribute to reducing energy consumption and extending the driving range, which can be achieved by optimizing the tire structure, in combination with developing innovative compounds and aerodynamically tuning the sidewall design.

Goodyear an OE supplier to around 50% of European-made EVs³

Many leading automobile manufacturers have chosen Goodyear as the original equipment tire choice for their recent EV and PHEV launches, meaning Goodyear now is an OE supplier to around 50% of European-made EVs. This demonstrates the confidence these leading manufacturers have in Goodyear’s products and technologies. 

In addition to the EV logo for replacement tires, Goodyear also features two other labels for its original equipment (OE) fitments designed for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

These labels, known as Goodyear’s Electric Drive Technology (EDT) and Electric Drive Ready (EDR) labels, will prominently be featured on OE EV and PHEV fitments. These labels signify the incorporation of a customized range of technologies to cater for the specific needs of a particular vehicle, such as combination of high load capacity, specific handling and noise performances and other criteria.

The new Goodyear Nordic friction tire UltraGrip Ice 3 is specifically designed for Nordic winter conditions. In recent Nordic magazine tire tests, it has obtained several top positions.  

In the latest Finnish Moottori’s¹ winter tire test the magazine compares four premium non-studded Nordic winter tires and four budget studded tires. UltraGrip Ice 3 receives the best score among all eight tested tires and is awarded Test Winner. 

The new Goodyear tire also ranks top in the latest Finnish Tekniikan Maailma’s² winter tire test, where it achieves a shared first place among nine tested Nordic friction tires. 

Excellent snow and ice performance

According to Moottori¹ the test winner UltraGrip Ice 3 has been significantly developed in ice performance compared to its predecessor. The tire showcases best performance in ice handling, ice braking and snow braking. The magazine praises the tire’s “excellent grip on ice and snow” ⁵. On asphalt the tire delivers the best performance in terms of wet handling, with the editors’ comment “safe and easy to drive in wet” ⁵.

Moreover, the UltraGrip Ice 3 convinces the experts of the Finnish magazine Tekniikan Maailma’s² who award the tire with top scores in braking and acceleration on snow. According to the magazine “Goodyear’s grip on ice is at the level of the best friction tires” ⁵. The editors praise the tire’s “balanced properties in all conditions” ⁵ and the low noise level.

Balanced overall performance recognized

Goodyear tires also shine in Vi Bilägare’s³ test of non-studded Nordic winter tires. The Swedish automotive publication ranks the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 3 second overall, highlighting its excellent balanced performance in different winter conditions, commenting “Goodyear is the best choice if you drive mostly on asphalt but still want good grip on ice and snow”. ⁶ 

Vi Bilägare³ testers add: “The predecessors have distinguished themselves as Nordic friction tires that perform well on wet roads. The newcomer retains this market position but has also strengthened its winter grip. It performs at the top in terms of starting and braking on snow and exhibits good cornering ability.”⁶

In addition, Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 3 achieves the second place among Nordic non-studded tires in the Swedish publication Teknikens Värld⁴. The magazine recognizes the balanced performance of the tire, mentioning “Positive is that Goodyear understands how to combine winter grip with decent aquaplaning characteristics.” ⁶ The tire also performs best in the famous moose-test. 

Besides the great result in Teknikens Värld among the Nordic non-studded tires category, Goodyear tires are awarded in the studded and Middle European non-studded category with the studded tire UltraGrip Arctic 2, and the new Middle European non-studded tire UltraGrip Performance 3 being crowned "Best in Test” in these two categories.⁶

Goodyear has announced a long-term tire supply agreement with Masters Historic Racing, one of the leading promoters of historic motorsport in the world. The tire supply agreement builds on Masters' long standing relationships with the Goodyear-owned Dunlop and Avon brands, and marks the reintroduction of Goodyear into several premium championships, including events for Formula 1 and 24 Hours of Le Mans cars.

Masters was formed in 2004 and currently runs nine race series in the UK, Europe and North America. The current race portfolio encompasses a diverse range of races for historically significant cars from 1960s touring cars through to 2010s sports cars.

Goodyear will supply tires to the Masters Endurance Legends and Masters GT Trophy series from the beginning of 2024. These tires will be manufactured alongside Goodyear’s contemporary FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series LMP2 and LMGT3 tires. This will ensure the prototypes and GT cars in the Masters portfolio benefit from the same consistency, performance and durability as the current cars.

Goodyear will also become the supplier for the Masters Racing Legends series for 1966 to 1985 Formula 1 cars. With 368 Grand Prix wins, Goodyear is the most successful manufacturer in the history of Formula 1. In an era spanning the eligibility period for the Masters championship, Goodyear dominated F1 against intense competition from other tire manufacturers. The newly-developed Goodyear F1 tires will gradually replace the Avon brand in this category.

The existing Dunlop-branded range of cross-ply treaded tires for historic Pre-66 GT and touring cars will be expanded to support Masters’ burgeoning grids, highlighting the company’s commitment to the sector. The Dunlop range gives truly authentic performance and aesthetics, complying with the FIA’s Appendix K regulations.

In Goodyear's new survey, 4,500 Europeans from nine countries have answered questions about driving in challenging winter road conditions and how to best prepare before hitting the winter road.  

Tires help to reduce winter driving anxiety 

The results reveal that tires are an important factor in reducing anxiety behind the wheel. Nearly nine out of ten European drivers [1] believe it's important to have the right tires during winter. As much as 51 percent consider them of very high importance for feeling safe on the road. There are also daily preparations that bring peace of mind while driving. The most common preparations are scraping the windows, checking the weather forecast and inspecting the tire pressure. 

“It is understandable that winter driving can cause anxiety for many of us. Facing unpredictable weather conditions, like icy roads, can be challenging, but there are ways to reduce anxiety and prepare for the unexpected. Apart from investing in premium tires, there are simple preparations that can easily be made, for example do a brake check or clean the headlights – this doesn't take much time and help to increase safety on the road”, says Sonia Leneveu, Director Marketing Consumer Europe, Goodyear.  

The survey highlights that the level of uncertainty varies among drivers in Europe. Most concerned are French and Polish drivers, where 34 percent and 26 percent feel worried behind the wheel during winter. Finns are the least worried, with only 12 percent feeling insecure when the road conditions become challenging. 

Preparation is key to success 

Preparations for winter road conditions look different depending on where you live in Europe. For the Nordic countries icy windows are a top concern that needs to be resolved. As much as 72 percent in Finland scrape the windows before they drive. In Norway 59 percent prepare in the same way and in Sweden and Denmark this group counts for 57 percent. Many Germans prepare by checking the tires tread depth, 29 percent indicate. One out of three Italians as well as French check the tire pressure and in Romania 51 percent inspect the antifreeze level. In Poland 42 percent indicate that they scan the weather forecast, and 30 percent do a brake check.  

Increase winter driving confidence 

The harsh winter weather is a concern for many European drivers, with 85 percent [2] feeling unsafe when driving in challenging winter road conditions. Icy roads and the fear of someone else losing control of the car are the main sources of worry. Most drivers become more confident by keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, reducing speed or taking extra time for the drive.  

But there are other ways that can help when driving in challenging conditions. David Waskuri, a renowned psychologist from Sweden, offers tips on becoming a more confident winter driver.

1. Avoid distractions 

Many accidents are caused by distracted drivers. Talking on the phone, conversing with a passenger, or letting your mind wander to something that has caused irritation, anger, or excitement can create distractions. If you feel a lot of emotions, focus on your breathing. Pull over and take a break if your emotions start to become overwhelming. 

2. Get plenty of rest 

It is essential to be well-rested when driving, as fatigue affects both reaction time and concentration. Therefore, make sure you get a good night's sleep before getting behind the wheel and plan stops along the way if you have a long journey ahead. If you suddenly feel tired during the trip, it is crucial for your and others’ safety to stop and rest. 

3. Practice again 

When winter returns, and the streets become slippery, many people forget what it was like to drive the previous year. Practice and exposure reduce anxiety, so if you feel unsure, spend some time experiencing the early winter conditions in a quiet environment. Practicing braking and accelerating will make you feel more confident when entering busier roads later. Bring along an experienced driver who can offer guidance if you need support.  

4. Keep the distance 

Make sure to keep an adequate distance from the car in front of you. It gives you time to react in case of a sudden stop. Bear in mind that your braking distance increases depending on the weather and road conditions. Maintaining enough distance can help you feel more relaxed when driving and may reduce anxiety behind the wheel, especially in challenging conditions.  

5. Practice mindfulness  

A tool that you can use anytime, both inside and outside the car, is mindfulness. It's all about focusing on the present moment. If you are feeling angry, worried, or stressed, there are simple ways to relax. Stop the car in a traffic-free spot. Try to become aware of your surroundings. What do you see? What do you hear? Concentrate on yourself. How does the seat feel on your legs and on your back? Focusing on your body and putting your mind to the very moment reduces your pulse rate and has a calming effect. When you concentrate on the present, you'll let go of negative thoughts, and as a result, you'll feel more relaxed and positive. 

These expert tips can help you become a more confident person, not only while driving but also in daily life. At the same time, it's important that the car is properly equipped for winter road conditions. The survey shows that half of European drivers are already switching to winter tires to prepare for winter, and a large majority agrees that winter tires are highly important for feeling safe during the colder months. 

A premium tire is making a big difference in performance. For example, a recent Autobild test showed that the braking distance on a wet road from 80 km/h can be up to 10 meters longer with low-budget winter tires compared to premium winter tires. [3]

Goodyear’s new winter tires are based on the  latest technologies which take tire performance to the next level. Special features make the tires a great fit for a wide variety of vehicles, including powerful and heavy SUVs and EVs. 

Goodyear introduces the new winter tire Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 for the majority of the European countries. The independent German test authority TUEV Sued confirms that, compared to four premium competitors, UltraGrip Performance 3 is a leader in snow handling, wet braking, and dry braking. [4] In the latest winter tire test by the leading European car magazine Auto Bild the Goodyear tire is awarded “exemplary” as well as “Eco-Master” and “Green-Tire”. [4]

The new non-studded tire Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 3 was especially developed for the Nordic winter road conditions. The independent Nordic testing authority UTAC (former Test World) confirms that, compared to four premium competitors, UltraGrip Ice 3 is a leader in traction, braking and handling on ice as well as in snow-handling. Filipe Albuquerque won the Goodyear Wingfoot Award at the 6 Hours of Fuji. The win puts him level with Team WRT driver Robert Kubica at the top of the Goodyear Wingfoot Endurance Award standings going into the final round at Bahrain on 4th November. 

Introduced this year and awarded after every FIA World Endurance Championship race, the Goodyear Wingfoot Award celebrates the art of maximising performance and executing a consistent pace across multiple stints. After each round, the award is given to the LMP2 driver who achieves the fastest stint average, measuring their average lap time over two consecutive stints, and three at Le Mans.

The team of the winning driver from each round is awarded a set of Goodyear racing tires. Every LMP2 entry competes for the Goodyear Wingfoot Award, which uses the same points system as the WEC to determine the winner over the course of the season. 

United Autosports driver Filipe Albuquerque won the award in Japan with an average lap time of 1:35.524, helping his team finish second in the LPM2 category.

With a 16-point lead back to Albert Costa in third place in the Goodyear Wingfoot Award standings, only Albuquerque and Kubica have a realistic chance of taking the overall honours for 2023.
