The annual survey asks those working in the transportation industry across Europe about the realities of working towards more sustainable transportation.

More than 1000 fleets contributed to the results of last year’s survey, and this year is the first opportunity to identify trends and discover if perspectives have changed. Last year’s findings were a fascinating insight into the industry’s response to sustainability, and this year's survey will build on those results.

The 2021 survey demonstrated how many fleets are contributing to lowering their carbon footprint with clear corporate social responsibility strategies and goals. The survey found that three out of four fleets recognised carbon footprint as an important issue, and 70% of larger fleets have defined clear green goals to work towards.

Since last year, the economic environment has shifted significantly. Inflationary pressure has meant an upwards trend in the price of raw materials and energy. Companies have felt the full force of these economic conditions, and the survey will aim to identify the impact that these shifts have had on sustainability goals.

The 2021 survey results showed how proactive fleet operators are in building a more sustainable future. With greater economic headwinds in 2022 it will be fascinating to see how our industry is meeting the challenge.

The initiative invites commercial vehicle operators to experience the advantages of connecting the dots between processes, solutions and services, emphasising the importance of getting the most out of every detail which add up to a more sustainable, efficient and competitive fleet.

The year-long Drive Results tour and campaign kick off on 22nd April in France, before heading to the United Kingdom, and Italy in May for the first round of the Goodyear FIA European Truck Racing Championship at Misano.

Inside the mobile showroom, Goodyear’s latest generation of versatile and fuel-efficient tyres will be on display, enriched by an immersive augmented reality element, which will bring guests even closer to the incorporated technology. It will reinforce the key elements of the products, highlighting the importance of optimising rolling resistance for efficiency cost, and minimising a vehicle’s carbon footprint. For instance, using the all-new FUELMAX ENDURANCE durable and low emission range will result in two percent less CO2 emissions or 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions and 40.000 litres of fuel, per year.¹

In 2021, FIA ETRC continued its movement towards a greener future with the introduction of 100% renewable HVO biodiesel, becoming the first FIA-regulated championship to run on sustainable biofuel. The one-stop fleet management solution combines data from Goodyear’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) with HERE location services. Goodyear TPMS is an advanced sensor and predictive algorithm solution that helps fleets avoid up to 90% of tire-related breakdowns. With HERE location services, fleet operators and Goodyear service providers can localize a vehicle in need of a service or road assistance intervention within a few meters and navigate them to the nearest maintenance station. In addition, Goodyear has been using HERE SDK (Software Development Kit) to provide a mobile application for commercial drivers.  

The HERE SDK is a set of programming interfaces that gives access to HERE’s rich portfolio of services, such as in-vehicle navigation, traffic alerts, transit information and fleet management features. The HERE SDK provides vector maps in over 190 countries and in 60 languages with optimized map data size to minimize download latency and to provide fast response times while still scaling to a high degree of fidelity. Map customization tools enable various adjustments such as the highlighting of important objects on a map by changing colors and icons as well as editing dynamic properties of cartography objects including buildings, roads and land use. The HERE SDK mapping, routing and search functions incorporate  truck specific road information, vehicle regulations and points of interest. HERE Routing also enables fleet managers to deliver optimized navigation routes incorporating the attributes of the roadway, legal and physical restrictions and adjusted road hierarchy and topology.

Goodyear and the FIA European Truck Racing Championship (FIA ETRC) have renewed their long-standing partnership with another three-year contract extension. This underlines Goodyear’s commitment to the exciting future vision of FIA ETRC, including an increased focus on innovation, sustainability and talent development.

FIA ETRC attracted 420,000 spectators to events in past years and is an important platform for tyre development. The tyre is an important component to drive results on the track, likewise for daily transport fleet operations. Efficiency and uptime are key to stay ahead of the game.

The experience of extreme situations in motorsport complements Goodyear’s on-road, test track, simulation and laboratory research and testing. The tyre data gathered from extreme race conditions enables the engineering team to develop new innovative tread and carcass technologies combining both low rolling resistance and durability for advanced on-road performance.

Hi-performance and sustainability

The FIA ETRC is underway to become a leading platform in the road haulage industry with a sustainability roadmap in place, a role model in the road haulage industry, underlining its commitment through becoming a signatory of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, to help implement the Paris Agreement and to accelerate the transformative change needed to reach greenhouse gas emission neutrality.

Starting the final race weekend with already 10 wins in the season, he was positioned in pole position to take his third title however it was not yet a done deal. With 60 points to play for in Italy, the top 3 was not yet fully decided prior to the race.

After a hard-fought season and 6 thrilling race weekends of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship on Goodyear tyres, Kiss confirmed his reputations as the fastest driver of his generation in the FIA ETRC with 276 points overall in the books. Second place went to Sascha Lenz with 227 points and Adam Lacko completed the top 3 podium, 24 points behind Lenz.

Truck racing is much like Formula 1 as it takes a lot of technical development and finetuning to optimize the performance of the truck and how the different parts work together, including the tyres. It’s a great pleasure to work with the team and I’m very proud. Being a new team, it is amazing how we could build up to this momentum in just 1 or 2 years and take the lead in the championship. Competition was fierce as we were all fighting for each victory and no mistakes where allowed.”

Close racing within the Goodyear Cup

Shane Brereton won the #Goodyear Cup, the truck racing competition for up-and-coming talent also racing on Goodyear tyres. Aged 52, he started his Truck Racing career in 2015 and this is his second Promoter cup title within FIA ETRC.

Until Le Mans, the Goodyear Cup was led by Téo Calvet of the Buggyra squad. The same weekend, promising talent Calvet became the youngest driver ever to win the French Truck Racing Championship with only 20 years on the dashboard. Just 20 years after his father Fabien Calvet, won the same title.

Third podium place of the Goodyear Cup goes to another talent, Steffen Faas, he switched his racing career from cars to the big wheels in 2017.

The new range will support thousands of European fleets and truck manufacturers to reduce the carbon footprint by combining the fuel efficiency levels known in long-haul applications with the durability, traction and mileage required to drive on secondary and state roads. The company states the new product line is the most versatile fuel-efficient it has ever produced and underlines all sizes feature a B- label in fuel efficiency¹ while offering a leading performance in inter-regional applications.

The sustainability dilemma

Sustainability is a key focus area across different stakeholders and industries. The European Commission presented in December 2019, the European Green Deal aiming to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050 and including an ambitious primary target to reduce net green gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

Goodyear’s decision to come with a new range that focuses on both fuel efficiency and endurance is anticipating the move towards more sustainable transport and evolving demand for more versatile products by both transportation companies and truck manufacturers.

Efficient and long-lasting performance

As a new standard tyre fitment for new trucks, the range covers a wide variety of haulage applications while supporting manufacturers to further lower emissions levels of new heavy-duty-vehicles by 2% on average in comparison to a C-label tyre for fuel efficiency.¹ In line with Europe’s overall ambition, CO2 emissions of new production commercial vehicles need to be reduced by 15% from 2025 onwards and even double, 30% as of 2030 in comparison to 2019-20 baseline.

Until now transportation operators often had to choose between durability, strong mileage performance or excellent fuel efficiency when it comes to tyres. FUELMAX ENDURANCE is designed to make that choice easier for fleet managers who are seeking cost and fuel efficiency as they are no longer limited by the type of road they operate on.

Key development focus areas

While setting new standards, Goodyear engineers focused on bridging three conflicting areas in the development spectrum to secure fuel efficiency and low emissions versus 1. mileage, 2. traction and 3. versatility.

As a starting point, the development of the new product line is based around demonstrated Goodyear technologies. On top, customized innovations for the steer and drive axle positions extend Goodyear’s established fuel efficiency capabilities to a wider range of routes, while safeguarding traction, grip and mileage trough a robust, versatile design.²

The FUELMAX S ENDURANCE steer tyre combines Goodyear’s proven IntelliMax Rib Technology in a 5 or 6 rib design with ingenuity in the rib distribution and groove geometry. The stiffeners in the shoulder grooves connect when the tyre rolls increasing the robustness of tyre and limiting wear in more demanding off-highway journeys, where stop-start driving, curb stone impact, increased turning and manoeuvring and more braking put additional demands on tyres.

The increased tread depth on selected steer sizes results in more wearable rubber³, providing better grip later in the service life. An innovative low energy-loss tread compound offsets heat generation caused by load forces on the steer position. A number of steer tyres also feature an optimized sidewall compound further contributing to lower emissions and fuel efficiency as it decreases flexion and deformation of the sidewall in off-highway operations.

In addition, to the innovative tread compound for use on the drive axle, the drive tyre benefits of a dedicated curing process to further optimize rolling resistance. The directional tread design includes a high number of deep sipes, deep centre grooves and more biting edges to improve traction and evacuate water more effectively.

By combining recognized and new technologies, the full FUELMAX ENDURANCE range provides high fuel efficiency (B-label), with enhanced robustness, late life grip and traction. Both steer and drive tyres are featuring the 3PMSF certification and are equipped with RFID enabling connected tyre management.

More sustainability by adding extra service life with Goodyear Retreading and intelligent solutions

Underlining Goodyear’s commitment to the circular economy the new FUELMAX ENDURANCE is fully compatible with Goodyear’s Retreading program. The drive tyre will be available as a premium TreadMax moldcure retread adding extra mileage while providing the same features and benefits as the new innovative tread and reducing tyre costs up to 30%⁴.

In combination with Goodyear’s smart tyre monitoring solutions including Goodyear TPMS, Drive-Over-Reader and most recently launched DrivePoint, the service life and fuel efficiency can be significantly enhanced. Today Goodyear is announcing the Sustainable Reality Survey inviting European transport and logistics companies to share their insights contributing to more sustainable transportation.

Climate change and environmental sustainability are high on the agenda of both regulators and industry players. In 2019 the European Green Deal was introduced targeting a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from transport, compared with 1990 levels. In 2020, the EU Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, including 82 initiatives for the next 4 years. The strategy is supporting the green and digital transformation of the transport ecosystem while becoming more resilient to cope with future disruptions.

In total transportation accounts for 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions in Europe¹. CO2 emissions of new heavy-truck trucks are targeted to reduce by 15% in 2025 and 30% by 2030 as measured by VECTO.

On top of the acceleration of the regulatory agenda, customers are including more ‘environmental focused’ requirements in their RFQ’s and end-consumers want to buy more from companies caring for the planet. In daily operations of commercial fleets, the shift towards greener mobility while staying competitive and assuring on-time delivery is requiring a clear strategy and smart actions.

The Sustainable Reality Survey initiated today by Goodyear is a straightforward inquiry on what transportation partners are currently doing to reduce carbon footprint as well as their future plans. It aims to reveal what truck fleets and transport companies are achieving in terms of sustainability – and the everyday commercial obstacles that are in their way. No greenwashing but a real-life look at sustainability in practice. As a recognition for each fleet respondent completing the survey, Goodyear is planting a tree in collaboration with Tree-Nation, a non-profit organisation coordinating reforestation efforts worldwide in a unique platform.

Supporting new talent

Goodyear continues its extended commitment in the FIA European Truck Racing Championship and is proud to continue its support of new talent in ETRC with the continuation of the Goodyear Cup, promoting the star drivers of tomorrow.

The Goodyear Cup is only open to the less experienced drivers in ETRC, excluding drivers such as former champions and the top eight from the prior season. This gives the up and coming drivers an opportunity to get more media attention and compete for their own prizes and points.

Learning from the racetrack

The Goodyear truck racing tire has the same 315/70R22.5 size and carcass technology as many Goodyear on-road products but has a unique asymmetrical design. The design has been optimised to obtain the best pressure distribution in contact with the ground, the best strength and better performance. The 5.1 mm grooves allow efficient water evacuation but combined with a stiff construction and a tread to tarmac contact area of 89% to give optimum dry grip, braking and traction.

These racing tires are developed by the same team that works on Goodyear’s high technology truck tires including the acclaimed KMAX-GEN 2 and FUELMAX-GEN 2 ranges. “This means the learnings from the racetrack and the road can easily and quickly transfer between the respective experts to help maintain Goodyear’s leadership position in truck tire development. On the road, Goodyear’s truck tires have to cope with high mileage fleets, have the strength and durability to reduce downtime, as well as heavy urban stop-start use. These tires use technology cascaded from Goodyear’s ETRC experience. Racing gives our engineers an insight into how advanced materials respond to high-speed kerb impacts, high temperatures, heavy braking, and huge torque figures,” added Szymanski.

Pan-European racing

The Hungaroring weekend features the fan-friendly ETRC format of four action-packed races. The championship then visits the Nürburgring in Germany for two four-race rounds, before racing at Most (Czech Republic), Zolder (Belgium), Le Mans (France), Jarama (Spain) and Misano (Italy).

The Hungaroring is one of the most popular events for fans on the ETRC calendar thanks to its proximity to major cities, neighbouring countries and being just 20 km from Budapest. Fans are core to the ETRC, drawn by the noise and drama of a packed grid of race-prepared 1,500 hp trucks, all based on road-going 4x2 tractor units. Thanks to strict COVID-19 testing and precautions, the ETRC weekend will be one of the first international motorsport events to be able to welcome fans back through the gates in 2021. The Hungaroring celebrates 35 years since its first Formula 1 Grand Prix this month, a race that was won by Nelson Piquet in his Goodyear-shod Williams.

Starting with Pouw Banden, the Dutch tire specialist’s TruckForce accolade builds on its certification from TUV Netherlands that recognised its work embracing sustainability. Its Nieuwegein depot has an environmental focus with LED lighting and solar panels, an exclusively Euro 6 compliant fleet and even the reusing of air as tires are deflated.

British service partner DMH has been recognised for its commitment and investment to cover new areas of the country through the growth of its fleet service footprint. Similarly, Neumaticos Sureste has embraced Goodyear’s Total Mobility offering by demonstrating the added value of one integrated tyre management to its fleet customers. This smart combination of expert service, predictive tyre maintenance, connected tyre monitoring solutions has helped Spanish operators improve fleet efficiency whilst reducing running costs.

German Reifenborse Arnold and French Yoann Pneus service partners have both been recognised with a TruckForce Award for using eJob to deliver best-in-class service for customers. The innovative eJob tool semi automates and streamlines the total truck and bus fleet inspection process from registration to maintenance, roadside assistance, retreading and warranty. The eJob App allows TruckForce technicians to instantly record and receive job and tyre information on mobile devices, enabling instant access to vehicle information and allowing fleet managers to see the status of the work on their vehicles in real time.

18 out of 30 sizes from Goodyear’s RT-4D/5D, RL-4K/5K, RL-3S/5S loader range will be included in this important upgrade program. Tires with the 3* marking provide a stronger radial carcass with a larger bead section and stronger ply wires. In the current challenging environment, fleets are now more than ever looking for ways to run their operations more efficiently and improve customer satisfaction by minimizing the downtime of the trucks, lowering their carbon footprint and managing overall costs.

The Role Tyres Play in a Championship

As official tyre supplier of the FIA European Truck Racing Championship (ETRC), Goodyear's tyres are put through their paces during a race weekend as 15 race-prepared trucks — based on road-going 4x2 tractor units — roar around Europe's race tracks. These trucks boast massive 1,500-bhp engines with average torque of 5,500 Nm, which can power the trucks from 0-100 kph in five seconds and 30-160 kph in just six seconds.

Without the right tyres, these trucks would never be able to perform in this way. With heavy loads under braking and 0-100 kph times to rival a sports car — but in a full-size truck!— the tyres need to withstand a lot of stress.

The same goes for endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. High-quality tyres contribute to the complex strategy of 24-hour race. Teams need to balance performance alongside fuel saving, meaning the tyres need to find the perfect balance between these two elements.

Formula One strategy is very similar. During its time in Formula One, Goodyear picked up 368 victories — still an unbeaten record today — and contributed to some clever strategy decisions. Again, the balance needs to be found between durability and performance to ensure drivers are able to get as much as possible from their cars while reducing the amount of time spent in the pits.

It's important that the tyres are fit for the job. Not only do they have to withstand the harsh conditions of the racetrack — high-speed kerbstone impacts, high temperatures, heavy braking, and quick acceleration — but they need to both perform and be efficient at the same time. These race tyres also need to work just as well in the wet as they do in the dry, as the ETRC uses the same tyres for both dry and wet conditions.

Continuing Innovation

These challenging race conditions make the perfect test bed for the innovation of new tyre technologies. Not just in terms of how to last longer, go faster, find more grip or save more fuel, but in terms of how to find the best balance and durability for road-going tyres.

Motorsport is exciting but it also provides an important element for the next level of tyres for both commercial and passenger vehicles.

Since 2004, Goodyear has been running a truck racing development programme, in which the specially designed Goodyear Truck Race Tyre became a reality. Since then, these tyres have evolved quite considerately including the introduction of RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) chips in 2011 to support the FIA officials in monitoring teams' tyre use to ensure fair play.

After intensive testing in truck racing, this connected tyre technology was brought into Goodyear's current on-road and mixed-service tyres. The chip in the tyre helps optimise daily fleet operations and tyre maintenance. The chip also provides a unique identification code, enabling tracking and monitoring of the tyre during its entire lifetime through production, regrooving, retreading and recycling.

From Race to Road

With this innovation, the technology that goes into Goodyear's truck racing tyres means that on-road tyres are getting more and more sophisticated and stronger — offering more mileage through extended lifetime. For commercial vehicles, the focus, of course, isn't on short-term performance. What Goodyear learns from its race truck tyres, it implements on the road to create more sustainable and efficient tyres with a low-rolling resistance to improve fuel consumption and wear.

Since the start of the year former truck racing champions and new drivers, such as youngest full-season entrant Teo Calvet, have been waiting for the start of the 2020 season. With the real life racing currently postponed till the opening event in Most, Czech Republic planned on August 29 and 30, 2020, they are more than ready to hit the grid in the virtual world.

“After obtaining the 2019 Junior title in the French Truck Championship, I’m really looking forward to starting my first ETRC season as part of one of the world’s best teams, BUGGYRA RACING. The ETRC Digital Racing Challenge is great way to keep the competition spirit and it is super fun to race already with my competitors. We will hopefully meet each other soon on the real grid! My target for the 2020 season is to end in the Top 10 and compete for the victory in the Grammer Cup.” said Téo Calvet, full-season ETRC entrant for BYGGYRA RACING

On May 24, full-season FIA ETRC entrants and ETRC drivers granted a special entry competed in the first race of the ETRC Digital Racing Challenge consisting of a series of eight virtual events. This first encounter between the giants of motorsport took place on the virtual track of the Hungaroring, a copy of the famous track in Hungary where normally the kick-off of the 2020 season would have taken place the last weekend of April. Local hero Norbert Kiss won both races in the opening round. Young gun Téo Calvet ended fourth in the first race and led the second race until Kiss took his second victory of the day after having great battle with Calvet. To be continued during the upcoming second round of the European Truck Racing Championship Digital Series on June 7^th at another legendary track, Misano (IT).

Likewise in the real world, drivers go full blast and have clearly trained to handle their cyber truck from the seat of their simulator of choice. The Assetto Corsa gaming platform also allows them to make personal modifications to their trucks featuring their actual 2020 team livery and Goodyear branded tires.

Goodyear Truck Racing tyres are built in size 315/70R22.5 using similar carcasses to those used in standard Goodyear truck tyres. These are modified mainly to reduce the risk of overheating and increase lateral rigidity, which enhances their performance for racing. The specifically-designed tread of the Goodyear Truck Racing tyre provides very high levels of grip in both dry and wet track conditions. It features an asymmetric shoulder design and circumferential grooves with a tread compound that gives consistent all-round performance to all drivers and on all tracks.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identity), which is now a standard feature in the latest Goodyear truck tyres, is also a feature of all Goodyear Truck Racing tyres, each of which is given a unique identity. To be eligible for the 2019 International DAF Driver Challenge Final, a driver knows how to get maximum performance from every drop of fuel. How to transport freight safely and on time during the rush hour. And how to keep a vehicle in top condition. Following an initial online registration process – including assessments on road knowledge and an understanding of the commercial vehicles in operation– selected drivers were tested at the national finals in their respective country.

At the 2019 International DAF Driver Challenge Final scheduled on end of September, 18 national DAF Driver Challenge Champions will demonstrate their expert driving skills, road safety awareness and understanding of the transport business. At the two-day Final at Goodyear, a series of innovative challenges, designed to put the finalists to the test, will see the contestants behind the wheel of the award-winning DAF truck range. These challenges will of course be driven on Goodyear latest generation tyre ranges, FUELMAX GEN-2 and KMAX GEN-2, to enhance fuel efficiency and mileage.

The jury, consisting of driving experts, will evaluate each local finalist on technical vehicle and tyre knowledge, eco-driving and road safety skills, manoeuvring capabilities and other key areas to be qualified as the overall winner and rewarded as the 2019 International DAF Driver Challenge Champion.

The 2019 International DAF Driver Challenge Final is taking place at the Goodyear proving grounds in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. The track once homologated for Formula 1 testing, has a total length of 3960 meters. Today it is used for the extensive testing of passenger and truck tyres to deliver high levels of performance and efficiency. For the Final, the finalists will participate in 9 different technical and handling workshops on the Goodyear track.

The Goodyear Flight Radial tire is designed to reduce weight and provide increased landings. The Flight Radial is stronger and lighter for superior service life and efficiency.

The following sizes and applications will be displayed: Boeing 737 MAX (size H44.5x16.5R21) and 777X (size 52x21.0R22); the Airbus A320neo (size 46x17.0R20); and the ATR 72 (size H34x10.0R16).

The Flight Radial features Goodyear Featherweight Alloy Core Bead Technology, the latest in Goodyear lightweight radial aircraft technology, for weight reduction. The tire also contains strong, rigid tread belts with merged cord technology for dimensional stability, longer service life and increased cut resistance.

Goodyear will supply the Flight Radial for the nose and main landing gear of the Boeing 777X, which is scheduled for delivery in 2020.

Starting at Misano, Italy on May 26, the series will yet again see the thrills of 1,500 horsepower, 5.5 tonne trucks racing at speeds of up to 160 km/h with acceleration similar to a high performance sports car.

All entrants will be exclusively racing on specially developed Goodyear Truck Racing Tyres. The extended exclusive relationship with the FIA and the European Truck Racing Association (ETRA) gives Goodyear the stage to demonstrate its innovative technological capabilities in truck tyres and test new technologies for truck tyres under challenging and competitive conditions.

Gerard De Rooy and the highly respected Netherlands-based team have competed in the event since 2002 with success; having had a class win in 2016, a 2nd place class finish in 2014 and this year Gerard De Rooy took 3rd place in the Truck Class of the 2019 Dakar Rally with all four of the Petronas Team De Rooy Ivecos finishing in the Top 10 on standard Goodyear Offroad ORD tyres.

The Dakar is considered the toughest race in the world having been held in Africa originally but then moved to South America and next year it will be in Saudi Arabia.

The tyres

Increased connectivity via RFID

Goodyear being a pioneer and addressing the latest digitalization trends, all new KMAX GEN-2 and FUELMAX GEN-2 tyres include radio frequency identification (RFID). The RFID tag is embedded inside the tyre to allow simple identification and connectivity to tyre management and tracking systems. It enables the connectivity of the tyre to communicate with a cloud-system on an individual serial number level resulting in an efficient tyre flow management. Additional benefit is theft prevention as these tyres can be easily traced.

3PMSF and lower CO2 emmissions

From a regulatory point of view, all new tyres are compliant with the stricter winter tyre legislation including the Three-Peak-Mountain-Snow-Flake (3PMSF) marking. The KMAX D GEN-2 drive tyre has a dual tread compound developed for optimal mileage performance in particular. This combines two layers of specific rubber compounds - the top compound provides high abrasion resistance with the other offering low rolling resistance for high mileage combined with fuel efficiency. Improved casing protection and durability as well as dynamic stone ejection are also design benefits. The casings are further optimised for variations in payload, providing high mileage and regular wear in a wide range of applications and load conditions.

The directional tread design features sipes and large shoulder grooves to increase traction throughout the tyre life and extend the total service life of the tyre. The new tyres have been developed with optimal damage resistance and longer service life for vehicles operating in today's mixed service applications where they face the difficult conditions of unpaved sites, but predominantly operate on roads. These include tippers, cement mixers, concrete pumps and low loaders operating in construction as well as trucks in the waste, recycling, timber and agricultural industries.

The company will also feature its patented Goodyear TPMS Heavy Duty predictive analytics technology from Goodyear Proactive Solutions at the event, able to provide off-the-road operators with precise, real-time tyre monitoring

Goodyear also announced a $36 million investment to increase OTR tyre production and fund process improvements at its manufacturing plant in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg.

Developed by Jim Street and legendary custom car designer George Barris, the Golden Sahara II was a platform for testing new electronics systems. It featured a control system with an aircraft-inspired control lever for acceleration, braking and steering and an automatic braking system that used sensors to detect potential objects in the car’s path.

The car’s tires were developed by Goodyear using Neothane,
a translucent form of synthetic rubber, and contained internal lighting, which allowed them to glow.

This was part of broader research by Goodyear into the feasibility of tires that could help improve visibility in bad weather conditions or be wired to light up when a driver hit the brakes.

In its heyday, the Golden Sahara II toured the United States, featuring on television and in films. It then sat in a garage for the best part of 50 years until Klairmont Kollections purchased the vehicle from Mecum Auctions in May 2018. The Golden Sahara II was restored with the help of Speakeasy Customs and Classics in Chicago and was presented at Geneva on four, newly-built Goodyear translucent tires.

The AERO concept includes a number of innovative features:

• Multimodal Design: The AERO is a multimodal tilt-rotor concept. It would serve as a drive train to transfer and absorb forces to and from the road in a traditional orientation and an aircraft propulsion system to provide lift in another orientation. With capable vehicles, the AERO would give future commuters the freedom to move seamlessly from the road to the sky.
   
• Non-Pneumatic Structure: The concept’s spokes would provide support to carry the weight of the vehicle and act as fan blades to provide lift when the tire is tilted. This unique airless tire uses a non-pneumatic structure that is flexible enough to dampen shocks when driving on the road, and strong enough to rotate at the high speeds necessary for the rotors to create vertical lift.
   
• Magnetic Propulsion: The AERO concept would use magnetic force to provide frictionless propulsion. This would enable the high rotating speeds required to drive the vehicle on the ground and, when the wheel is tilted, lift a vehicle into the air and propel it forward.
   
• Optical Sensing: The AERO would use light-based, fiber optic sensors to monitor road conditions, tire wear and the structural integrity of the tire itself.
   
• Artificial Intelligence: The concept would also feature an embedded A.I. processor that would combine information from the tire’s sensors with data from vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. The A.I. processor would analyze these streams of data to recommend a course of action - allowing a vehicle to adapt to a flying or driving mode – and identify and resolve potential tire-related issues before they happen.

While the AERO is a purely conceptual design, some of its featured technologies, such as a non-pneumatic structure and intelligent tire capabilities, are being developed by Goodyear today, while others might become the basis for new ideas and potentially new products in the future.

Goodyear’s concepts are meant to trigger a debate on the tires and transport technologies for a new mobility ecosystem.

Britain’s round of the FIM Moto2™ and Moto3™ World Championships take place at Silverstone’s GoPro British Grand Prix over the weekend of 24-26 August. The event marks the first appearance of the British Talent Cup (BTC) alongside the World Championships, supported by Dunlop tyres.

Dunlop’s ethos is to support young talent coming up through the ranks by giving them the tyre knowledge and skills they need to progress. The British Talent Cup is the perfect example of this, as it aims to provide a pathway to MotoGP for British riders. 

To assist the riders’ progress, Dunlop provides the same top performing product as used across the world championships. This enables the young BTC riders to understand the performance and feedback and develop with the tyres ahead of entering the Moto3 class. 

Dunlop’s unrivalled track support service also equals that of the Moto3 and Moto2 classes at BTC. The track support team works closelywith young riders to prepare them for the next step on the ladder, helping them to understand their tyres and how they can use them to gain performance advantages.

In addition to being control tyre supplier to the intermediate and lightweight classes, Dunlop also provides the tyres for the Red Bull Rookies Cup, and both European and Asian Talent Cups. Dunlop also features strongly in Motostar which runs alongside the Bennetts British Superbike Championship. This is open tyre competition where many teams choose Dunlop’s world championship product to prepare riders as they progress into Moto3.

Kiara Fontanesi won both WMX races at the penultimate round of the FIM Motocross World Championship. The MXGP of The Netherlands at Assen this weekend saw Kiara claim maximum points and move into the lead of the championship. In both races, the Italian four-time champion took the lead on lap five and crossed the line 1.5 and six seconds ahead of the rest respectively. The Yamaha rider chose Dunlop Geomax MX12 rear tyres with MX33 on the front. Kiara had started the event second in the championship to fellow Dunlop/Yamaha rider Courtney Duncan who announced her withdrawal from the remainder of the season due to a foot injury. The double win moved Kiara to the top of the table with an eight point advantage and one round remaining. Amandine Verstappen also moved up the table with the help of Dunlop tyres and now lies sixth.

In MXGP, Shaun Simpson (Yamaha), Clement Desalle (Kawasaki) and Jeremy Seewer (Yamaha) took top-ten finishes in sixth, eighth and tenth respectively. Ben Watson came close to another MX2 podium, ultimately finishing fifth.

The next event, the MXGP of Italy, takes place at Imola on 30^thSeptember.

“It’s great to have Kiara back at the top – it’s just a shame that Courtney has been injured or we could have had a Dunlop 1-2 this year. Eight points is a good lead going into the final round but there is still a big fight ahead in Italy for Kiara to take her fifth title. We are back to soft-medium ground for the last round of the season so our riders will be back to MX33 all-round to confirm their final positions and take the last wins of the year we hope.”

Spa-Francorchamps hosts the penultimate round of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) on 22^nd/23^rdSeptember. The 2018 titles will be decided in the final eight hours of racing. The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps has several unique aspects including the length of the lap, the older aggressive/demanding surface and the elevation changes.

This season sees the #26 G-Drive Racing Oreca at the top of the points table with the Russian squad looking to take its second win at the track this year following LMP2 victory in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) race in May. The team has won the last three rounds of the ELMS.

In the GTE class, the #88 Proton Competition Porsche leads the title race ahead of defending champions JMW Motorsport with the #66 Ferrari.

For the front-running LMP2 cars, the A and B (soft and medium) options will be available, the same allocation available to G-Drive Racing for the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps win. The all-Dunlop LMGTE class runners also have A and B options to choose from in the dry. Should Spa-Francorchamps feature typical Ardennes wet weather, intermediate tyres and full wet tyres are available for the LMP2 cars with full wets the sole rain option for the GT cars.

“We have seen a lot of surfaces that are new or low grip, so Spa is possibly one of the most unusual for the season with the demands of the older, aggressive surface. It should have very different tyre demands to the other tracks on the calendar so teams will need to make the most of their practice time to get the best set-ups for the race. Looking at the points situations in both classes that we’re competing in, this race could be critical which should make for a good race.”

The 2018/19 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) begins with the first round at the Bol d’Or, the iconic 24 hour race hosted at the Circuit Paul Ricard at Le Castellet in the south of France on 15^th/16^thSeptember.

The new season marks the start of Dunlop’s campaign to add to the success tally of 11 championship titles in 15 years. Suzuki Endurance Racing Team and Honda Endurance Racing Team continue to partner with Dunlop in their quest to be crowned champions. Maco Racing will also be working with Dunlop as a partner team, as will former superstock team #333 Team Yamaha Viltaïs which has switched to the main EWC class this season.

In the Endurance World Cup class, Dunlop took a 1-2-3 last season, with bike #4, Webike Tati Team Trickstar, looking to retain the title, competing against fellow-Dunlop squad Junior Team Le Mans Sud Suzuki, last season’s runners-up. Moto Ain is also looking for more race wins and to improve on last season’s third place. 

34 of the 59 entries have chosen to race on Dunlop tyres in the Bol d’Or. The teams have no tyre restrictions for the race this year as the track has been resurfaced and slightly modified since the 2017 Le Castellet round. 

New for 2018 – points are now to be awarded for the top five qualifying positions bringing new importance to grid positions. Dunlop will work with the teams through the season to maximise points-scoring potential. 

Dunlop Independents Trophy

27 of the Bol d’Or entries are registered in the Dunlop Independent Trophy – the competition for independently run teams. Prize money is available for each round, aimed at assisting privateer teams who compete in the entire World Championship.

Dunlop tyres at the Bol d’Or

Unlike the remaining rounds, tyre use is unlimited for the event due to the revised circuit and surface. The surface is known to be more abrasive than previous events but in testing the partner teams were positive about the new front and new rear Dunlop tyres with good times, grip, durability and feel.

Private teams will be using two different compounds of the 120/70 R 17 KR106 front tyre (medium/hard and hard) with a choice of four compounds (soft, medium, medium/hard and hard) for the 205/60 R 17 KR108 rears. Factory supported teams will have two front tyre options and five rear compounds to choose from. 

Tyre Strategies:

This season EWC teams are likely to double-stint the front tyre and single stint the rear tyre while Superstock teams (with a longer wheel change procedure) will generally have a four to six stint strategy on the front tyres and two to three stints on the rear. However, with no tyre restrictions for the Bol d’Or, EWC teams are likely to single stint both front and rear tyres.

Dunlop’s 2018 FIM Moto2™ and Moto3™ Championship battles resume at Misano

After the cancellation of Silverstone, attentions now turn to the next two rounds of the 2018 FIM Moto2™ and Moto3™ World Championships. First up is Misano on 9 September for round 13, followed by round 14 at MotorLand Aragon two weeks later (23 September). 

Dunlop engineers have carefully selected the best rear tyres for each event, designed to cater for the demands of the different surfaces. Misano is a high energy track, so riders will have the option of the Medium or Hard tyres for both classes, offering increased durability and heat-resistance. For Aragon, a circuit well known to the Dunlop engineers, they’ve selected a softer front Moto2 tyre for riders to try alongside the medium tyre to see which riders prefer for the mid-energy track.

August Recap – championship battles abound, but no British GP

Round ten took place at Brno in ideal conditions where Fabio Di Giannantonio took the Moto3 victory by just 0.1sec at the flag. Marco Bezzecchi moved to the head of the tables, as his chief championship rival Jorge Martin crashed in practice, breaking his wrist. In Moto2 Miguel Oliveira won his second race of the season to take the series lead. Lap times throughout the race were consistent, in a race where the top four were separated by just 0.7 seconds.

Round 11 at the Red Bull Ring saw Bezzechi score his first pole of the season and a second Moto3 win, as Jorge Martin fought through the pain to claim an eighth podium finish. Lorenzo Dalla Porta set a new Moto3 lap record in a race that was ten seconds faster than last year. Francesco Bagnaia took his second Moto2 win of the year to retake the championship lead. Tyre performance was excellent with seven riders setting their fastest time in the final three laps.

Round 12 was due at Silverstone on 26 August, on the newly surfaced track. However, torrential rain on Sunday led Race Direction and the Safety Commission to cancel the event on the grounds of safety.

#ForeverForward 2018

Miguel Oliveira continues to lead Dunlop’s ForeverForward tables, the overtaking league rewards riders for their determination across each race. The Portuguese is also three points adrift of the overall Moto2 championship lead following some incredible fightbacks through the field. Ten places separate the next nine riders in the table. In Brno, Tatsuki Suzuki gained 14 places to be the top mover. Fellow Moto3 rider John McPhee was the biggest mover at the Red Bull Ring, with an incredible 18 places gained in the race as he fought through the pack after a qualifying crash.

• Joan Mir held off a charging Fabio Di Giannantonio to take his eighth Moto3 win, by just 0.043
• Giannantonio fought his way through the field from 14th to second, gaining 12 places and setting a new Moto3 lap record
