With the tire change season approaching, many drivers are currently wondering whether they should opt for all-season tires this year. A look behind the scenes of the test winner Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 can provide interesting insights and arguments. Thanks to its versatile technologies, it is ideal for both warm and cold weather conditions.

A visit to the Goodyear Innovation Centre

The development of an all-season tire requires the precise coordination of many factors and involves several phases: from concept development including tire construction, cavity shape, tread pattern design and tread compounds, to the testing and finetuning of these critical components resulting in a perfectly balanced tire. The all-season tire combines elements from the tread pattern, the sipe structure, the groove arrangement and the sidewalls of summer and winter tires to ensure balanced performance in changing weather conditions.

Much more than rubber and soot

Only the tread compound for the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 consists of up to 17 components,  for example, synthetic rubbers which provide excellent grip and wear performance. Silica and traction resins offer outstanding grip, and braking performance in rainy weather. Other components include carbon black, sulphur, wax, and antioxidants, as well as sunflower oil, which increases the flexibility of the rubber. "The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3's adaptive rubber compound ensures that the tire remains flexible at different temperatures and offers reliable performance and outstanding mileage in a wide range of conditions. It actually represents a category of its own, connecting the best of two worlds", says Goodyear's compounding engineer Chris Kaes.

Developed in the winter laboratory

In the winter laboratory, Goodyear engineers produce different types of snow to test different rubber compounds and sipe structures on them. For example, the braking distance varies considerably depending on the nature of the snow and ice. The test of the Vector 4Seasons compound on a metal plate compacted with snow shows that the pure rubber compound already provides strong grip. Combined with the special 3D sipes on the centre of the tread, the Snow Grip technology ensures excellent grip on snow. Only around 63% of the rubber has direct contact with the road; the grooves of the remaining percent drain water and offer protection against aquaplaning or indirectly provide grip.

Eight times around the world

Before a Goodyear tire goes into series production, it has circled the earth eight times, on the road or on the roller test bench, and undergone 3,800 development tests. On the in-house test track, the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 showed how effectively the dry handling technology developed for the premium all-season tire works. This includes reinforced tread and shoulder blocks that reduce the deformation of the tire under high loads, such as during sporty driving in dry conditions. The result: short braking and very good grip on dry roads.

When it comes to purchasing a set of brand-new tires, many more drivers now opt for a set of all-season tires, which are excellent all-rounders that suit a wide range of drivers and cars. Still, there are misconceptions about these tires that aren’t true, particularly after so many years of research has accelerated their development and performance. 

Dunlop’s next-generation All Season 2 tire is a good example of the improvements in the latest all-season tires. With its latest tire, which is the result of 18 months of research and development, Dunlop brings to the market an advanced product that helps drivers handle all-year weather conditions. This ensures that drivers on the road feel prepared without the extra inconvenience of having to change tires with the seasons. 

The tire industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in the demand for all-season tires in recent years: from 2019 to 2023, the all-season tire segment experienced a growth rate of 66% in Europe¹.  Despite this, certain myths about all-season tires remain popular. Here are five facts you should know before buying all-season tires:  

1. Myth: All-season tires wear out quickly 
Fact: The latest tire technologies provide strong mileage   

One major consideration when buying tires is how long they are going to last. Thanks to the latest developments in all-season tire technology, they now provide high mileage alongside all-season performance. Dunlop All Season 2, the newest addition to the Dunlop portfolio, is a good example. This specific model features an optimized design that helps increase mileage by evenly distributing weight across the tire’s contact patch, delivering a more uniform pressure distribution for long-lasting treadwear.

Dunlop All Season 2 has recently achieved a successful magazine test debut being awarded “Eco-Master” and “best” in mileage to rank overall “good” in the latest Auto Bild all-season tire test². Editors praised the tire for “balanced good performance level without serious weaknesses” and “best mileage in the test”. 

2. Myth: All-season tires can’t handle winter conditions  
Fact: All-season tires are certified for use on snow    

All-season tires are marked with the same industry-standard 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) label as winter tires. This means they meet all the necessary requirements to be driven on snow. To qualify for this certification, winter and all-season tires like Dunlop All Season 2 are tested in line with industry regulations.

To achieve this, Dunlop has developed 3D blades across the tire’s tread which is a key design feature resulting in increased stiffness as well as biting edges for better snow traction, thus providing effective braking in all weather conditions. Dunlop All Season 2 also features an optimized carcass shape using robust structural materials to increase stability. This feature enhances handling on wet as well as on dry roads.  

Dunlop recommends all-season tires for milder winter conditions; winter tires are best for severe snow and ice. This recommendation aligns with findings from a recent Ipsos study conducted on behalf of Goodyear³, which revealed that almost two-thirds of European drivers perceive winter tires as better for grip and braking on snowy and icy roads.  

3. Myth: Grip in summer suffers with all-season tires  
Fact: All-season tires achieve excellent handling in summer   

In contrast to the previous myth, some drivers actually have the misconception that all-season tires only perform well in winter. With the latest technologies, modern all-season tires represent a huge step forward, delivering great dry performance as well as winter grip. This means drivers won’t be left wanting more on long summer road trips. They can feel confident and prepared, knowing that their tires are developed for use in all weather conditions.  

4. Myth: Only small city cars can be fitted with all-season tires 
Fact: All-season tires fit most vehicles   

Many drivers still consider all-season tires to be best on small compact vehicles, which isn’t the case. Dunlop All Season 2 is available in sizes ranging between 14 and 19 inches and is ready to support larger vehicles as each tire size is developed with a carcass tuned to the specific application it will encounter.    

5. Myth: All-season tires are “just a compromise”
Fact: The latest-generation all-season tires offer well-balanced performance all year long  

As the technology enabling all-season tires has matured over years, more and more drivers across Europe are using them³, recognising them as an attractive alternative to changing between summer and winter tires. Dunlop recommends all-season tires especially for consumers who are mainly city drivers living in non-mountainous or less severe winter areas. Modern all-season tires are designed to provide balanced and effective performance in a variety of conditions, making them suitable for year-round. Drivers don’t have to switch between summer and winter sets, which alleviates some of the stress of car ownership allowing them to feel more prepared for a range of a weather conditions.

European drivers who use premium winter tires during the colder months report significantly higher confidence and comfort over those with tires from non-premium brands, a recent study has found, underlining that choosing the right tire is one of the most important things drivers can do to prepare for winter conditions. 

According to the report, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Goodyear¹, 65% of drivers with winter tires from a premium brand are confident driving in the winter, a considerable improvement compared to drivers with non-premium tires (54%). The data suggests that the benefits of investing in a premium brand tire should not be ignored by drivers, especially in more challenging winter conditions. 

These findings are particularly relevant for people who are passionate about driving and enjoy driving even in harsh weather to make the most of their vehicle. The study found that this profile of drivers, who tend to be much younger compared to the average car owner, already report a higher level of confidence driving in winter conditions and tend to encounter fewer conditions that make them uncomfortable. 

A straightforward improvement to unlock winter driving potential 

While usage of winter tires is consistent across age groups, younger drivers are twice as likely to consider them than drivers aged over 45. Despite this, just under three in ten drivers aged 18-34 aren’t actively considering winter tires, which could be due to some of the most common misconceptions associated with them. 

Amongst the common beliefs that put drivers off changing to winter tires are a concern about the inconvenience of switching and a belief that current climate conditions render them unnecessary. 

While the winter tire segment is expected to decline by an estimated 1.6% each year by 2029², due to milder winters and advances in all-season tire technology and capability, winter tires do remain the best choice for many drivers, due to the prevalence of wintery conditions in many countries across the continent. As reported by drivers who use them, winter tires remain the most capable in snow and ice, and more than half of European drivers still report encountering these conditions when driving. As such, even as we experience slightly milder winters, most European drivers still find themselves driving in conditions where they would feel more comfortable with winter tires.

Goodyear offers winter driving advice to be ready for the colder months 

The survey found that, in general, drivers across Europe are aware that they need to take different precautions when driving in winter conditions. Three in four drivers often practice safe driving techniques in the winter, and more than four in five regularly check the weather forecast before setting out. However, fewer drivers go further than this by taking more steps to prepare for the conditions. 

There are a number of things drivers can do to help their preparation for winter driving and boost their confidence venturing out even in snow, heavy rain or ice. Here are some of Goodyear’s top tips: 

• Check the law. In some regions, winter tires are a legal requirement during certain times of the year. Goodyear’s guide to driving in winter can help explain the rules if you’re planning a winter road trip across borders, but drivers should always check with the relevant authority in each country to determine the most up-to-date winter tire rules. 
• Choose the right tires. To comply with regulations or increase your driving confidence, make sure you choose tires with the right certifications. The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) logo indicates that tires meet winter performance standards. All tires in Goodyear’s winter range meet the relevant criteria for this mark. 
• Install winter tires early. Get ahead of the season and make sure you’ve fitted winter tires in time for the first cold weather. If in doubt, Goodyear recommends the ‘7 degrees rule’; winter tires are your best choice in any weather conditions below 7ºC, even if there is no snow or ice. 
• Check tire pressure and condition. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations for tire pressure and remember that cold weather can reduce the pressure. Regularly check your tire pressures and tread depth, along with a visual inspection of the tire to ensure they are free of any cracks or damage. 
• Check the car before setting out. Scrape the windows clear of snow and ice and use your heating to make sure they are free of condensation to aid visibility, just as brushing snow off the outside of your headlights will. If there is a large amount of snow on the roof of your car, brush that off too, as it can be dangerous if it falls off while driving, potentially blocking visibility. Check the washer fluid levels and keep in mind that different products can be used to prevent it freezing. 
• Drive with extra caution. When on the road, keep additional distance to the car in front to give you more time to react and slow down, especially as stopping distances can be up to ten times longer on icy roads.  
• Take it easy. Don’t go too hard on the pedals, either: hitting the accelerator or brake too hard can reduce your control. Adjust your speed to the prevailing weather conditions: sometimes it may not be safe to drive the posted speed limit, so exercise caution and good judgement.

European drivers have positive views on many aspects of all-season tire usage in milder winter conditions, according to an Ipsos survey conducted on behalf of the Goodyear group which recently launched its next-generation Dunlop All Season 2 tire. The study, conducted in seven European countries¹, showed that all-season and winter tires are perceived by a meaningful group of drivers as delivering equally well on “safety while driving”, “comfort while driving” and “mileage”.  

Key drivers to all-season tire popularity 

All-season tires offer a good balance between summer and winter tires, with technology that enables them to perform well all year round, in a wide range of weather conditions and temperatures.   

The study showed that winter tires are perceived as better for grip and braking on snowy and icy roads, with almost two-thirds of respondents declaring such a view. This comes in line with Dunlop’s recommendation for drivers to use winter tires in severe winter conditions.  

Asked about opinion on other aspects - such as performance on wet and dry roads, mileage, safety and comfort while driving – a meaningful group of drivers shared positive views on all-season tires: 

• When it comes to grip and braking on wet roads, the study shows that one third (34%) of surveyed drivers perceive all-season tires as good as winter tires.   
• When referring to grip and braking on dry roads, more than two thirds (68%) said that all-season tires were equally good or better than winter tires. 
• More than one third (36%) of drivers believe that “safety while driving” and “comfort while driving” on all-season tires are equally good as for winter tires. For mileage, 31% of respondents assess it as “equally good”.    

A growing and maturing segment  

The all-season tire segment is projected to grow by an estimated 6.7% each year between 2024 and 2029, while the value all-season segment, which includes Dunlop All-Season 2, is projected to grow even more by an estimated 9.1% in the same period².

This type of tire is an attractive option for drivers who want to skip seasonal tire swaps and save time and money by avoiding the cost of replacement and storage. The study found that most European drivers have neutral or slightly positive experiences when changing tires, but a significant proportion (1 out of 4) have negative experiences which might nudge them towards all-season tires.   

The all-season segment growth also correlates to the overall technological improvements being made in the sector. Dunlop All Season 2 is the result of more than 12,500 hours of research and development during an 18-month evolution process and is packed with innovative technologies that provide competitive performance and mileage. The technology behind the tire  

There are three main elements that underline the advanced technology in Dunlop All Season 2:  

• 3D Blading is a key design feature that enables an increased stiffness across both wet and dry braking and provides numerous biting edges for better traction on snow.  
• Optimized carcass shape using robust structural materials to increase stability – this feature enhances handling on wet as well as on dry roads.   
• Optimized footprint: Tire contact patch is optimized to deliver a more uniform pressure distribution and long-lasting treadwear.  

The supply of Dunlop All Season 2 began in February, and the new tire will be gradually available throughout 2024 in 59 SKUs, ranging from 14 to 19 inches.

Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 has been crowned the winner of ADAC’s latest winter tire test, earning the highest “good” rating among 16 competing winter tires tested in the compact SUV segment.

Conducted by ADAC, Europe’s largest automobile association, in collaboration with its Austrian and Swiss counterparts ÖAMTC and TCS, the evaluation assessed the tires’ safety and performance in snow, wet, and dry conditions, as well as their environmental impact. The test was carried out with a Volkswagen T-Roc equipped with the popular 215/55R17 UltraGrip Performance 3. 

In the test report, Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 stood out for its “safe and precise driving characteristics” on dry, wet, and winter roads, delivering “very high predicted mileage, low abrasion, and excellent efficiency, with no notable weaknesses.” Its exceptional performance across all testing criteria earned it the highest overall score. 

Designed for optimal winter driving, Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 benefits from class-leading technologies and innovations, such as Snow Protect Technology and Wet Grip+ Technology, which optimize grip and control during the winter driving season.

Strong performance across multiple sizes

Goodyear’s success extended towards the compact car category, with UltraGrip Performance 3 also being awarded second place in the 205/55R16 size tested on a Volkswagen Golf, once again earning a “good” rating.

Testers praised the tire’s performance, noting its “balanced” design, which offers “good precision on dry roads” while ensuring “safe and precise handling on wet and winter surfaces.” The tire also demonstrated “high predicted mileage, low abrasion, low fuel consumption, and lightweight characteristics.”

For use on the racetrack as well as the road, Eagle F1 SuperSport R and SuperSport RS offer two distinct steps up in feedback and performance driving capability. SuperSport R’s resin-tuned compound produces even better grip than the standard SuperSport and its profile helps to ensure better pressure distribution for enhanced steering precision whether on the race track or the road.

Goodyear Eagle F1: Motorsport heritage, from race to road

The technology within the tires is inspired by the world of motorsport, with Goodyear using its decades of experience to deliver both on the track and the road. In 2024, the FIA World Endurance Championship launched the brand new LMGT3 category with Goodyear as exclusive tire supplier. The class features vehicles based on sports cars for which the Eagle F1 range is designed, with representation from nine different premium manufacturers. This link from the race track to the road with cars that are based on the target cars for the SuperSport family helps Goodyear transfer its technological philosophies to each discipline.

Goodyear’s Audi Q6 e-tron fitments come from its Eagle F1 Asymmetric and UltraGrip ranges for summer and winter applications, respectively. The approved fitments will fit multiple trim levels, with Goodyear’s SKUs ranging from 18” to 21”. Goodyear collaborated closely with Audi throughout the modelling and testing phases of tire development, resulting in fitments specifically tailored to enhance the vehicle’s performance.

The new Q6 e-tron was required to meet specific exterior noise standards in order to achieve homologation to new regulations that mandated a reduction of 2 dB¹. This necessitated tire development that lowered road noise. Goodyear supported Audi’s targets by tailoring the tread design and tuning the construction of the OE tires.

Furthermore, Goodyear developed specific tire specifications for each axle, allowing the performance characteristics of each to be tuned individually and resulting in excellent cornering stability and handling behaviour.

Goodyear ‘Electric Drive Technology’ for OE 

Goodyear is the OE supplier to around 50% of European-made EVs², underlining the confidence that OEMs have in Goodyear technology. To identify specific Original Equipment (OE) tires for EVs and PHEVs, Goodyear has introduced Goodyear ‘Electric Drive Ready’ (EDR). This means the tire features a customized range of technologies to cater for the specific needs of that car manufacturer for a specific vehicle, such as combination of high load capacity, specific handling performance and other criteria. Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 has become the first all-season tire to ever receive a ‘Good’ rating in an ADAC tire test, having won the German organisation’s 16-inch all-season tire test published this week. 

ADAC, Europe’s largest automobile association, in collaboration with its Austrian and Swiss counterparts ÖAMTC and TCS, tested 16 all-season tires in terms of safety on snow, wet and dry conditions, as well as environmental balance. The test was carried out on Volkswagen Golf with the popular 205/55 R16 fitment. 

Awarding Goodyear’s all-season tire first place in the ranking, ADAC’s testers remarked on a “well-tuned”¹ tire without “glaring weaknesses in any area” ¹, whilst noting good results on wet and wintry roads². Good environmental balance, determined by high efficiency, low tire wear and an above-average predicted mileage was integral for its victory. 

Indeed, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 proved best in mileage achieving 67,000 km, which is 45.6% more than the worst-performing candidate in the test in terms of mileage.

Reliable performance in all weather conditions

More than 12,500 hours of research and development were spent on the tire over an 18-month period, which included a mix of on-road and simulated tests.

This detailed development process results in the All Season 2 boasting excellent performance and offering good value for money, being defined as one of the key priorities by 51% of drivers as concluded in a recent consumer study².

The tire is packed with innovative technologies that provide competitive performance and mileage.

3D blading is a key design feature that enables lateral and longitudinal interlocking for increased stiffness as well as biting edges for better snow traction, thus providing effective braking in all weather conditions. All Season 2 also features an optimized carcass shape using robust structural materials to increase stability. This feature enhances handling on wet as well as on dry roads.

Pushing the limits of performance from a fully road-legal tire, Goodyear has developed a two-tire range for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The unique high-friction compound of the SuperSport RS provides a refined track-focused experience in dry conditions, while excellent cornering stability is achieved by bridges in the tread pattern’s inner groove, optimizing the tire’s footprint for more consistent pressure distribution.

With a large variety of tire choices available on the market, it's crucial for drivers to recognize the significant performance disparities among them. The choice of tires can dramatically affect braking distances, with disparities of up to 15 meters on wet roads at 80 km/h and seven meters on dry surfaces at 100 km/h ¹. While the upfront cost of investing in high-quality summer tires may appear significant, the long-term benefits encompass not only improved performance and comfort but also substantial savings. ³ 

Drive twice the kilometers 

The German automotive publication Auto Bild compared the mileage of 20 summer tires, ranking the premium Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 first with 63,200 km. This is more than double the km you can drive with the tire ranked last in the test. ²    

Auto Bild also compared the price/1,000 km mileage of 20 summer tires, with the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 being the cheapest tire for € 8.70/1,000 km. That is around 50% less than the average of the price/1,000 km of the last seven ranked tires (€ 16.14). ³ 

This translates to a saving of around 50% for every 1,000 km travelled. 

Ready for electric vehicles  

Modern high-quality summer tires are also optimized for the special needs of electric vehicles. In fact, all Goodyear tires are designed to be suitable for use with both electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional combustion engine vehicles.

Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology can half interior car noise (up to 4 dB),⁴ making the tire a perfect fit for EVs as tire and road noises are the dominant interior sounds in most EVs.

Award-winning performance boosts driving experience

Summer tires are recommended in summer instead of winter tires 

When the temperatures rise in spring Goodyear recommends drivers changing to a summer equipment for their cars. Latest tests prove that wet braking from 80 km/h at 15°C with winter tires results in around two meters of extra braking distance compared to summer tires. ⁵   

Also, the German ADAC recommends replacing winter tires with summer tires at summer temperatures because of the increased risk of accidents.⁶ 

“The warmer the temperature, the larger the performance difference”, Laurent Colantonio, Regional Technology Director EMEA, Goodyear explains. “Driving with winter tires in summer causes differences in the dynamic behavior of the vehicle, while the specific compounds and design used in summer tires guarantee an optimal wear rate, with positive impact on mileage, efficiency and sustainability.” 

Tire maintenance tips  

Only with the right maintenance drivers get the most out of their premium tires and can even save money in the long run. 

• Inspect tires regularly for damage and ensure they meet the minimum legal tread depth required. Worn tires particularly suffer in wet conditions as the tread designed to evacuate water is worn away. 
• Pressure checks should be conducted once a month. Underinflated tires will not only cause your vehicle to use more fuel, but also increase wear and, in extreme cases, cause tire failure. Always follow manufacturer guidance on tire pressure. This information can be found in the car’s handbook. Never use tires below the recommended load index. 
• Avoid contact with kerbs and potholes where possible. Furthermore, finding the most efficient route and smooth driving will increase tire life and boost fuel economy.

The new Citroën ë-C3 is the first all European designed and built affordable small car without any compromise on quality, experience and comfort.

Goodyear will supply the EfficientGrip Performance 2, a summer tire designed to offer ultra-low rolling resistance to increase efficiency and therefore electric range. Awarded 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd place, Goodyear brands impress in the latest ADAC winter tire test, which is one of the most comprehensive of its kind in Europe. 

ADAC is Europe’s largest automobile association, and in its latest test it compares 32 winter tires, 16 representing each of the popular 205/60R16¹ and 225/45R17² sizes.

The latest ADAC test reveals not only the excellent balanced performance but also the great efficiency of Goodyear winter tires, UltraGrip 9+ and UltraGrip Performance+.

Achieving overall 2^nd place, the UltraGrip Performance+ performs exceptionally in the 17-inch test. Experts comment on its strengths: “Safe handling characteristics on dry roads, still good properties on wet roads, very high predicted mileage, low abrasion, good efficiency”. ²

At the same time, Goodyear UltraGrip 9+ finishes overall third in the 16-inch comparison. Goodyear is the tire of choice for some of the leading light commercial vehicle OEMs. Recently, Volkswagen selected Goodyear as a tire supplier for the ID.Buzz² and ID.Buzz Cargo³. Goodyear has worked closely with Italian luxury sports car manufacturer Maserati to develop a bespoke tire for the different versions of its new GranTurismo. The car will be available with a V6 twin-turbo configuration with two different levels of performance. 

The tires selected are Goodyear’s Eagle F1 SuperSport, part of Goodyear’s UUHP (ultra-ultra-high performance) range. The same acclaimed SuperSport performance will come as standard on the new GranTurismo, with additional development that tunes the tire to the characteristics of the new Maserati models. The tires will be marked with MGT that means it´s a specific development for the Italian brand. 

Goodyear developed the Eagle F1 SuperSport range to provide superior performance for extreme road and track cars, using the same development technologies as race tires that carry teams to victory in some of the most prestigious races in the world, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Learnings from Goodyear’s involvement in a number of top-level racing championships have gone directly into the Eagle F1 SuperSport road tire to give drivers superior grip, handling and stability in dry and wet conditions.

A tire developed with virtual simulation

Goodyear and Maserati have collaborated to use virtual simulation to develop the tires fitted to the GranTurismo. This simulation helps cut down on the number of prototype tires required, which makes the process of designing and developing high-performance tires more sustainable. The move away from multiple iterations of physical prototype tires also improves cost and efficiency, due to the huge amount of data that can be collected with virtual R&D methods. 

As one of the first manufacturers to apply this technology, Goodyear is driving innovation in a fast-moving sector. Simulation is now an integral part of developing tires for the road and the track. 

Instead of using raw materials to manufacture small batches of prototype tires, advanced tire models are created in the virtual world, where thousands of permutations can be calculated and experimented in the simulator, saving on the logistical costs associated with traditional testing.

With the trend towards larger and more powerful vehicles, like SUVs and EVs, consumer demand has shifted toward premium tires with a proven record for delivering high performance and efficiency.

The new UltraGrip Performance 3 reduces the complexity of the winter portfolio. The tire enters the market as the successor for both the UltraGrip 9+ and UltraGrip Performance+. By September 2023 it will be available in a comprehensive line-up in 94 sizes from 14 to 21 inches, to fit a wider range of passenger cars, compatible for internal combustion engine, electric and hybrid vehicles.

A consumer study conducted by Buzzback¹ on behalf of Goodyear found that the most important benefit of a winter tire was its ability to perform well in all winter conditions, on snow, wet and dry roads. This has driven Goodyear to deliver a versatile tire with an even more balanced winter performance than the already awarded predecessor.

Cutting edge technologies for leading performance

With a range of innovative features, Goodyear sets performance benchmarks. A recent test conducted by the independent German test authority TUEV Sued confirms that, compared to four premium competitors, UltraGrip Performance 3 leads in snow handling, wet braking and dry braking.²

The new Goodyear winter tire is based on latest technologies which take its performance to a next level. Special features make it a perfect fit for a wide variety of vehicles, including powerful EVs.

Snow Protect Technology provides increased sipe density offering a multitude of gripping edges for optimal traction and grip. In addition, “snow claws”, longer grooves at the shoulder edge, improve performance on soft and deep snow.

Wet Grip+ Technology with an optimised round footprint provides better water dispersion. Water is pushed to the side rather than to the front, which reduces the risk of aquaplaning and offers excellent performance in wet driving conditions.

Innovative 3D sipes in the shoulder part increase tire stiffness and improve performance on dry roads.

Thanks to special tire features which improve efficiency and reduce interior noise, UltraGrip Performance 3 winter tire is also EV-ready. Rolling resistance has been reduced by up to 3%³, and tire weight by up to 10%³ across the range. In addition, a more aerodynamic sidewall shape reduces turbulence and improves airflow.

Besides, a new noise cancelling pattern design reduces interior noise by up to 36% (up to 2 dBA) across the range.³  Goodyear’s SoundComfort Technology will be added in the future line-up resulting in a noise reduction of up to 50% (up to 4 dBA).⁴

To cope with the extreme torque of electric cars, UltraGrip Performance 3 offers an innovative wear resistant tread compound, while 3D sipes provide more stability to stand the stronger forces.

UltraGrip Performance 3 fits amongst the latest and most popular vehicles in the market, such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A6/S6, BMW i4 M50, BMW 4-series Gran Coupé, Cupra Formentor, Tesla Model S Plaid or Smart #1, Toyota Aygo X or Volvo C40/XC40.

For the new version of Porsche’s hallowed GT family, Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 is one of the tires of choice.

The N2 version of Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 is homologated by Porsche for use on the 718 Cayman GT4 RS as well as the 718 Cayman GT4, in sizes 245/35ZR20 (front) and 295/30ZR20 (rear).

Dunlop Sport Maxx Race 2 is designed to give drivers intense grip in dry conditions and balance cornering under high G-forces, especially for high-performance sports cars like the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The level of knowledge, experience and preparation for driving in Europe’s coldest months of the year varies greatly among different nations, new research has found. 

Top of the winter driving knowledge league is Romania, where 79% of drivers understand the specific benefits and differences of winter and all-season tires, significantly higher than any other European country. France and Italy, for example, reported much lower knowledge, agreeing that they knew the difference 56% and 69% of the time, respectively. In the UK, this dropped to just 34%. Romanian drivers are also more likely to check the regulations in neighbouring countries when crossing borders, with 56% stating they do this. 

Goodyear’s Winter Driving Attitudes Survey asked 4,000 respondents from eight key European markets a range of questions about their driving experience in winter months, their tire knowledge and habits, and awareness of local legislation to provide insights to enable well-informed tire advice for drivers across Europe. 

Ice ranks number one for deterring drivers

Drivers reported feeling the most anxiety over driving in ice than any other condition, with 14% of respondents saying they would never drive in icy and sub-zero conditions. This ranked higher than snow (12%), fog (6%) and heavy rain (4%). The most confident country was Luxembourg, whose drivers reported feeling confident in all conditions. Meanwhile Italy and Spain are significantly less confident in fog, snow and ice. Poland was the only country that didn’t rank ice top, with fog being the main cause of concern for Polish drivers. 

Tire habits: 58% of drivers only change tires when worn

The survey found that the majority (58%) of European drivers only change tires when worn, ignoring the benefits of changing with the seasons. Countries where the majority of drivers change their tires with the season are Germany (54%), Luxembourg (57%), Poland (83%), and Romania (70%).

Poland reports the highest proportion of drivers changing its tires, which translates to the second highest confidence in the snow after Luxembourg. Countries where swapping tires is practised least reported higher levels of anxiety for driving in adverse conditions. Italy and Spain in particular have a hard time when it snows, but only 36% of Italians and 12% of Spanish drivers move to a winter tire when winter arrives. 

Drivers can enjoy increased grip and confidence with a winter tire, such as the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+, which has a range of features that boost performance in cold weather. Goodyear’s Winter Grip Technology features a new compound mixture which gives an improved rubber elasticity at low temperatures to boost grip on snow and ice. Snow gets trapped in the tread sipes (the thin slits which are cut across into the tire treads), forming a kind of claw or crampon, helping the tire grip the snow. A similar effect occurs when compacting snow into a ball, with new and existing snow ‘gripping’ onto each other. 

Other breakthroughs such as the Traction Protect Technology add up to allow braking forces to be better and more easily converted into grip, cutting wet and dry braking distances by up to 1.5 metres. It was also declared “highly recommended” in an ÖAMTC test².

Laurent Colantonio, Regional Technology Director EMEA, Goodyear: “The survey shows that, for drivers who live in regions that experience harsher winter weather conditions than the average European climate, a tire dedicated specifically for winter use gives more confidence in ice and snow. Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+’s tread and sipe pattern delivers shorter braking distances, increased resistance to aquaplaning and a confident feeling on snow and ice. Given the number of drivers reporting high levels of anxiety in winter conditions, there should be a greater awareness for winter tires. The Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ is the ideal tire for temperatures below seven degrees celcius, giving drivers excellent grip and traction, as proven by its test wins.

Driving in winter remains a source of anxiety for drivers across Europe, new research from Goodyear’s Winter Driving Attitudes Survey has found. Data shows that ice is the number one fear of drivers, with those surveyed feeling the most anxiety over driving in ice than any other condition. 

With the all-season tire market segment growing an average of 38.5% across Europe (each year between 2015 and 2021²), Goodyear surveyed drivers across Europe to find out how attitudes, perceptions and habits differ across eight key European markets. The survey asked 4,000 respondents a range of questions about their driving experience in winter months, tire knowledge and habits, and awareness of local legislation to provide insights to enable well-informed tire advice for drivers across Europe.

Drivers reported feeling the most anxiety over driving in ice than any other condition, with 16% of respondents saying they would never drive in icy and sub-zero conditions. This ranked higher than snow (12%), fog (6%) and heavy rain (4%). 

The most confident country was Luxembourg, whose drivers reported feeling confident in all conditions (62%). Meanwhile, Italy and Spain are significantly less confident in fog (46% Italy, 44% Spain), snow (57% Italy, 68% Spain) and ice (60% Italy, 74% Spain)³. Poland was the only country that didn’t rank ice top, with fog being the main cause of concern for its drivers (37% feel uncomfortable). 

Out of each condition, Luxembourg drivers were most comfortable in heavy rain, alongside British drivers who, relative to other conditions, feel very comfortable in the wet. Spanish and Italian drivers were among the most fearful in Europe, particularly in ice and snow. In Spain, 41% of drivers would never drive in sub-zero conditions. 

Knowledge of season-specific tires varies among countries

In countries with winter tire legislation, the level of awareness drivers have for summer, winter and all-season tires is high. 68% of respondents agreed with the statement “I am aware of the differences between a summer/winter tire and an all-season tire.” In Poland, an impressive 80% are aware of the difference.

However, in the UK and Spain, there was not as much self-reported knowledge. Only 45% of British and 46% of Spanish drivers were confident they knew the difference between season-specific and all-season tires. 

Choosing a tire fit for your needs

It was recently named the winner of German magazine Auto Bild’s all-season tire test⁴ for the second consecutive year, placing ahead of more than 30 other brands in a comprehensive examination of dry, wet, snow and mileage performance.

Grip on snow and ice vs rolling resistance

Is it possible to create an all-season tire rated for providing grip on snow and ice while maintaining excellent rolling resistance? Typically, these two factors are at odds with each other but, by using the latest technology drawn from Goodyear’s extensive research and experience, such a feat was possible in Vector 4Seasons Gen-3.

Therefore, Goodyear became the first tire manufacturer to introduce an all-season tire with both the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) label and class A rolling resistance for an original equipment application. Both ratings are recognised across Europe as indicators of a tire’s performance and reliability in each area. The 3PMSF symbol guarantees that a tire meets rigorous testing standards to be reliable and safe on snow, and is typically reserved for winter tires. As an all-season tire, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 not only has to perform in wintery conditions but in the summer, too, where rolling resistance plays a more prominent role in a drivers’ demands.

That’s where the importance of the class A rolling resistance rating comes in. The EU tire label includes five classes for fuel efficiency, measuring rolling resistance from A to E. Between classes, fuel consumption increases by approximately 0.1 litre for every 100 km. With a class A rating, drivers know that Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 is amongst the most fuel efficient tires on the market today, saving money at the fuel station and decreasing their environmental footprint.¹

How it’s made

To achieve such a first in the tire industry, Goodyear’s top R&D experts had a challenge ahead of them. At the Goodyear Innovation Centre Luxembourg (GIC*L), the company’s R&D experts frequently draw on data and experience from a wide range of arenas, whether that’s from winning races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans or inspiring confidence in off-road truck applications. As a result, they were able to develop an innovative tire compound for Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 that met all the demands.

“On Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, it was crucial to have a well-balanced tire that can perform whether it’s in dry braking or traction on snow,” explains Claude Jacoby, an R&D associate in the compound technology team at GIC*L. An example of the technology used to achieve this is the study into glass transition (Tg) in polymers. Claude and his team knew that low Tg polymers help achieve low tread wear and cold-weather performance, so they matched this with a high silica content to increase Vector 4Seasons Gen-3’s wet weather capabilities.

Fake snow, real research

Sustainability doesn’t just come from the performance and impact of the end product, however. It is a topic at the forefront of Goodyear’s approach to the development process, too. The ‘winter lab’ at GIC*L allows for accurate and reproducible testing that isn’t subject to real-world weather conditions. Whereas previously the testing stage of product development would require travel and trips to sub-zero locations, more and more of this can be simulated in-house, not only decreasing the footprint but increasing accuracy and reproducibility.

Frank Schmitz, the chief engineer in applied physical metrology at GIC*L, is responsible for the physical laboratories used to test parts of a new tire. An example he gives into the complexity of testing tires is how “the demands of the compounds in the sidewall, which doesn’t have contact with the road surface, and the tread, which does, are very different.” 

Having an in-house facility that is able to recreate specific weather conditions and create fake snow makes this process considerably easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly. “Having a cold laboratory in-house is very important, because we have complete control over the conditions,” Schmitz adds. “This independence, this flexibility, is crucial for allowing us to test and reproduce conditions as much as necessary.”

Advanced technologies at the service of sustainability

Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 doesn’t only need to perform on snow and ice, however. A wide range of driving conditions are now provided by the advanced driving simulator. An industry leader in virtual product development, Goodyear has expanded into vehicle simulation. This includes the installation of both compact and fully dynamic driving simulators, a first in the industry, providing a level of simulation sophistication to allow Goodyear to drive breakthroughs in future tire creation, leading to an enhanced customer and driver experience. 

Virtual simulation efforts will help lead to fewer physical testing iterations and provide a more sustainable testing future. By 2024, Goodyear is seeking to reduce its physical testing iterations to one per SKU, a dramatic reduction from current levels. 

The automotive industry trend toward a virtual development cycle provides an opportunity for tire development, and this new simulation avenue allows Goodyear to work more collaboratively with automobile manufacturers on original equipment fitments. These driving simulators are being used for the virtual development and tuning of a tire’s dynamic performance, aided by the ability to simulate a range of driving conditions.

Sustainability Bold Goals

Goodyear’s efforts towards a sustainable future are an essential part of the company’s ethos, with goals to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and use fully renewable energy in all its facilities by 2040. Last year, Goodyear developed a demonstration tire made up of 70% renewable materials as part of a target to produce a 100% sustainable materials tire by the end of the decade. 

Finding innovative ways to maintain a low rolling resistance, thus decreasing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions, while giving drivers the level of snow and ice grip they’d normally expect in a winter tire, was the brief for Goodyear’s latest all-season tire, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3. This type of innovation and focus on sustainability, however, is simply one of hundreds of examples of Goodyear’s forward-thinking approach to developing tires for a sustainable future.

With Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, Goodyear was the first tire manufacturer to introduce an all-season tire with both the 3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake (3PMSF) label and the best level (class A) of rolling resistance for an original equipment (OE) application.

Today’s car buyers are choosing larger and more premium cars, often equipped with bigger wheel sizes. The ever-growing demand for premium electric cars and compact SUVs has played a major role in this trend. With the market growth of these car segments, tire sizes grew as well. Since 2015, a growth of A segment tires (17” and above) has been observed; on average, the market has increased by 8.4% year-on-year¹. Another trend seen in the tire market has been the constant growth in popularity of all-season tires, bringing the convenience of a multi-season product.

Tire rules for winter differ depending on the market. Many countries, such as Germany or Austria, have long had tire regulations based on the weather and time of year.  Increasingly other countries, such as France, are also introducing seasonal tire regulations. Depending on the region, tire regulations require the ‘M+S’ (Mud + Snow) and 3PMSF marking, indicating the tire is suitable for snowy and icy conditions. For the end user, this means they need at least two sets of tires for different times of the year or driving in different regions. The Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 features the necessary markings to comply with European legislation all year long.

In 2020, Europe experienced its warmest winter since 1981, which directly impacted drivers. Rain and black ice became more commonplace at the expense of snowy and icy roads⁴. This has led to the increased need for tires that can perform well in wet and icy road conditions as opposed to snowy, further increasing market demand for all-season products.

The ETRMA report shows that the all-season segment of tires is currently the fastest growing in the market. In the last seven years, the average year-on-year growth rate reached 21.7%¹. One of the contributing factors is that an increasing number of premium car manufacturers are deciding to equip their vehicles with all-season tires or make them available to the customer as an optional feature. In 2021, the growth reached 36.9%.

The expanding market is also visible in the Goodyear all-season range. Since 1985, the company’s all-season tire range has grown significantly since the introduction of the first Vector model up to today’s Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 range, including specific variants for car, SUV and Cargo vehicles. In 2022, the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 range has 176 SKUs available including 34 SUV and 39 Cargo fitments. There are also new sizes coming for 2023. This breadth of fitments covers many of the most popular vehicles on the road today, including electric cars such as the Volkswagen ID3/ID4, BMW iX3, Mercedes EQA and Peugeot e-208/e-2008. It is also available as an OE fitment for the Peugeot 2008/3008/5008, and DS3 Crossback. 

Drivers want to be ready for any season and feel safe in any weather conditions. The newest generation of all-season tires brings the convenience of a single set able to cope with severe winter road conditions whilst providing comfort and efficiency in the summertime. This is extremely important for users of EVs, where maximising range can affect purchasing decisions and buying habits. Goodyear Vector 4-Seasons Gen-3 achieves a class A rating on the European tire label rating, underling its low rolling resistance, helping vehicles’ energy efficiency. Furthermore, the newest generation of Vector provides improved mileage over competitors giving drivers the longevity they demand⁵.

Auto Bild, a leading German automotive publication, has ranked the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 tire number one out of 15¹ other products extensively tested during its all-season tire test for small cars. It was chosen as the favourite not only for its performance but also for its efficiency and sustainable credentials.

Included in the September 29 edition (Issue 39-2022)¹, Auto Bild conducted the small car test with a Volkswagen Polo on size 195/55R16 tires. The Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was named the outright winner, and just one of two tested tires rated “exemplary” by Auto Bild’s testers. It’s also the third consecutive year that Goodyear has come out on top with its Vector 4Seasons Gen-3.²

A standout score for the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was for dry handling, where only it and Dunlop’s Sport All Season were given the joint highest score. Elsewhere, traction, braking and handling were particular strengths of the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 in each of the wet, dry and snowy conditions tested. 

The test concluded that in wet weather conditions, the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 offers drivers ‘convincing performance’ across each set of conditions. 

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 also named ‘Green tire 2022’

Not only was the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 ranked highest in the performance test, but Auto Bild’s testers also found that it provides drivers with outstanding mileage and low abrasion rate, as well as low weight and a quieter driving experience than tested competitors. 

Goodyear’s Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was the stand-out performer when considering a tire that both performs well across a variety of conditions, and was the most efficient. Auto Bild concluded that Goodyear proves that “top performance in driving dynamics and commitment to the environment are not mutually exclusive.”^3,4

The testers recommended the tire’s superior performance on wintry roads, writing that “no one can hold a candle to the Goodyear Vector on snow”¹, while also being impressed by the latest iteration of the Vector family’s all-round performance in dry and wet conditions, too. The test evaluated the popular 235/55R18 size with a Volkswagen Tiguan, featuring all-season tires from seven different manufacturers².

Since inventing the all-season tire in 1985, Goodyear has regularly refined and updated the Vector range, perfecting the recipe for a tire that performs in sun, rain and snow. The latest version, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3, is a true all-season tire that provides excellent dry performance and low rolling resistance, while meeting the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) regulations that are typically reserved for specific winter tires. The result is a tire that performs all year long, giving drivers the reliable and predictable performance they demand in any conditions. 

In the Gute Fahrt test, Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was named the “uncrowned king of snow” in the winter test criteria, scoring a ‘Very Good +’ rating². It was also the only tested tire to score top marks in every winter test area. When measuring the wet and dry criteria, the Goodyear tire was awarded a ‘Good +’ score, with specific ‘Very Good’ scores for its resistance to aquaplaning. The tire’s handling capabilities on dry and wet surfaces, braking, comfort and rolling resistance were also praised. 

Overall, combining both elements of the test, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was named the joint winner, one of only two tires to score a ‘Very Good’ across the board.

Goodyear tires have been selected as an original fitment on the upcoming Maserati Grecale. Initially announced in March, the car is the next generation in Maserati’s SUV range.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV was selected due to its sporty profile and performance. The tire was designed and engineered with such SUV performance in mind, providing  powerful grip and extracting the most out of a car’s power and mechanical grip.

The tire includes a variety of technology including rim protection and SoundComfort technology. Renault has selected a range of Goodyear tires as original equipment fitments on the brand-new Mégane E-TECH Electric, the French automaker’s new fully electric car.

Five different Goodyear tires and sizes have been chosen as part of the Mégane E-TECH Electric’s OE options. Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is the summer fitment in size 195/60R18, and Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance has been chosen for the larger 215/45R20 specification thanks to its ultra low rolling resistance of 5,7 kg/t and precise steering performance . In both sizes, Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 is also available as an all-season option. As a result of this wide selection, around three-quarters of Mégane E-TECH Electrics will be fitted with Goodyear tires out of the factory.

Deliveries started in the first quarter of 2022, with production beginning in November 2021 at Renault’s ElectriCity hub in Douai, northern France. The car is fitted with an electric motor developed jointly within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance which weighs only 145 kg and produces either 96 kW (130 hp) or 160 kW (218 hp) depending on specification.

The car’s battery is the thinnest on the market at just 110 mm, allowing it to fit snugly to the CMF-EV platform, lowering the total height of the vehicle. It is available in two capacities: 40 kWh for a range of up to 300 km (WLTP) or 60 kWh for 470 km.

Goodyear also supplies the EfficientGrip Performance as OE fitment on the Renault Captur¹, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 in the Espace and as such the OE fitments on the Mégane E-TECH Electric continue Goodyear’s strong relationship with the French brand.

An ‘R’ marking on the sidewall of all four Goodyear tires for the Mégane E-TECH Electric denotes that the tires have been specifically chosen and approved by Renault. The tires also carry Goodyear’s Electric Drive Technology (EDT) marking. This logo is on the sidewalls of every Goodyear OE tire designed for electric vehicles, showing that the tire includes a range of technologies to cater for the specific needs of that OEM’s electric vehicles.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance is the ideal summer tire for electric cars like the Mégane E-TECH, as it combines low rolling resistance, excellent wet grip and shorter braking distances to create an end result that provides performance and efficiency. The Goodyear Blimp will fly in European skies for the third consecutive year since its comeback in 2020. In 2022, the calendar features five racing events, including the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the WTCR - FIA World Touring Car Cup round at the Nürburgring. The airship will also soar above a number of cities, giving fans the chance to spot the Blimp in the sky.

The Goodyear Blimp operating in Europe is a Goodyear-branded Zeppelin NT semi-rigid airship. With over a century of history and innovation in lighter-than-air aviation, the Goodyear brand icon will be back in European skies for the third consecutive year providing the coverage of major motorsport events and allowing selected guests to experience the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fly on the Blimp.

The Goodyear Blimp will start its 2022 tour in May, visiting the 6 Hours of Spa in Belgium on 7 May as part of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). In the following couple of days, the airship will fly over to the UK, where it will place a visit to London, allowing citizens to see the Blimp once again on 11-12 May after last year’s visit to the British capital. From there, the icon will travel to Brands Hatch for the action-packed weekend at the second round of the British Touring Car Championship while providing aerial coverage of the race (14-15 May). At the end of the month, the Goodyear brand ambassador will cross the German border and arrive at the longest track on the 2022 WTCR calendar - Nürburgring Nordschleife (28 May).

The Blimp will continue its tour in June, starting with the world-known 24 Hours of Le Mans race visit (10-12 June). The major event on the WEC calendar will be one of the most important events this year, where the airship will provide aerial coverage. The 2022 tour will be completed in July with a trip to Milan and its third visit to the WEC series at the I 6 Hours of Monza (9-10 July).

Motorsport has long been a proving ground for Goodyear’s innovations and technologies and today the crossover between road and track is more relevant than ever.

Today, Goodyear is highly active in endurance and touring car racing and there is close collaboration between the company’s racing and consumer road tire teams with many of the construction elements and compounds being created in the same Goodyear innovation and manufacturing centres. 

Endurance challenges

Goodyear is the exclusive tire supplier to the Le Mans Prototype (LMP2) class of the FIA World Endurance Championship and European Le Mans Series. The top teams from both compete in the 24 hours of Le Mans, one of the world’s toughest tests of car, driver and tires.  

“Le Mans and other major endurance races provide us with the opportunity to prove our technology in gruelling events that feature a wide range of temperatures, different race durations and a vast array of different circuit types,” explains Ben Crawley, Goodyear’s Director Motorsport EMEA. “We have to develop tires that deliver outright speed, durability and longevity. Even more importantly, versatility is crucial. Unlike modern Formula 1, where a range of compounds is permitted, Goodyear was tasked with producing a compound that can excel from the cool sub-10°C temperatures of a night race to the searing 40°C+ heat of racing at circuits such as Bahrain. This gives a real relevance to road tire technology as the driver using Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 expects it to be ready for anything. We apply the learnings from racing to road car compound development, but often our race team is also learning from our road car colleagues.”

In the heat of the day a set of Goodyear LMP2 tires can achieve four stints (each stint is the distance the car races between refuelling stops) and go even further in the cool of the night. Just like on Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, where low rolling resistance is as important to road car drivers as the performance and grip, this regulation gives the same target to Goodyear’s race engineers. 

Electrifying the world tour

Goodyear is also the tire supplier to many touring car championships including the FIA WTCR World Touring Car Cup, the British Touring Car Championship and the new FIA ETCR - eTouring Car World Cup. The latter is the world's first all-electric multi-brand touring car series. Goodyear is supplying one spec of tire to be used in both wet and dry conditions, reducing the number of tires that have to be shipped to the global races. As well as improving sustainability, this also focuses Goodyear on developing technology that can work on a range of circuits and in changeable weather conditions. “To develop all-weather race tires for the most powerful touring cars ever is highly relevant for Goodyear. As the performance car market moves towards powerful, high torque and heavier electrified cars, our electric racing experience crosses over to the development of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6,” added Crawley.

The genesis and legacy

The Goodyear Eagle F1 brand pays homage to the company’s incredible Formula 1 legacy. Goodyear tires were first seen in F1 in 1964 and took Richie Ginther to victory for Honda at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix. By 1966 they were the choice of World Champions, with Sir Jack Brabham taking his eponymous car to Goodyear’s first global title.

Goodyear won 368 Grands Prix and 26 World Constructors’ Championships in a 35-year run; a record that still stands unbeaten today. Even more significantly, and in contrast to the modern era, 28 of those seasons featured open tire competition, pushing Goodyear to develop new technologies against rivals on track.

On the road, the iconic McLaren F1 supercar, launched in 1992, featured specifically developed Goodyear Eagle F1 tires to manage the 620hp power output from its 6.1 litre V12 engine. The original McLaren press release highlighted the importance of Goodyear’s contribution: “Right from the McLaren F1’s initial design, the tire was considered as an intrinsic suspension element within the programme’s complex handling and comfort calculations. Weight, safety, noise and dynamic performance were all vital factors.”

From exotic to mainstream

In 1994, the Eagle F1 range was broadened to cover other supercar and sportscar fitments with the distinctive Eagle F1 GS-D2 (Grand Sport - Directional) and later the GS-D3. Their striking directional patterns became a firm favourite with performance car drivers and tuners, combining dry weather handling prowess with stunning wet weather grip. 

From Directional to Asymmetric

In 2007, the Eagle F1 range made its most dramatic design shift, moving from the trademark directional pattern to an all-new Asymmetric construction.

Laurent Colantonio, Technology Director Consumer Tires EMEA, joined Goodyear as an engineer at the peak of Eagle F1’s directional era, a period when hot hatchbacks had 15” rims and supercars had smaller rim diameters than some compact cars do today. He explains the reason for the transition to an Asymmetric design: “The GS-D2 and GS-D3 were focused on wet performance and resisting aquaplaning. The distinctive tread pattern made it a real breakthrough in the market. It gave Goodyear a clear edge versus the UHP competition.

“The vehicle parc began to evolve, weight increased, 18 and 19 inch rim sizes became the norm and the cars of the mid-2000s had gained both weight and power. We looked for a tread design with a stronger shoulder strength to cope with the extra dynamic load. Our development teams realised that we could maintain our trademark wet performance and braking whilst improving grip and dry handling by moving to a distinctive Asymmetric design with a powerful shoulder construction.”

By the time the Eagle F1 Asymmetric reached its third generation in 2016, new design elements were introduced for both performance and environmental reasons, as Colantonio explains: “The introduction of the EU tire label meant that consumers began to consider factors such as rolling resistance and noise, even on a performance car. We were able to score highly on the label whilst pushing the performance forward.

“Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 introduced Goodyear innovations such as Active Braking Technology, which increased the contact surface and grip when braking, allowing for a shorter braking distance. At this generation, we also introduced new reinforced construction technology, which allows for a lighter construction without sacrificing strength. This focus on efficiency and performance became an Eagle F1 hallmark.

After the launch of Asymmetric 3 we immediately focused on developing technologies to boost handling and wet performance. With rim sizes over 20 inch being commonplace, we also developed more tire sizes to cover the dramatic shift in the vehicle parc.”

Goodyear prides itself on being a step ahead of the market. Just a few years later, the new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 became a regular test winner, collecting accolades such as an ‘exemplary’ rating from Auto Bild sportscars in 2019¹. As recently as last year, it was declared UHP Test Winner by Tyre Reviews². Tester Jon Benson concluded: “The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 is a tire with almost no weaknesses. It has excellent grip in the dry and wet, sporty handling, excellent aquaplaning resistance and low rolling resistance.”

The history of Goodyear’s Eagle F1 line means that such test wins aren’t a reason for complacency. As that Tyre Reviews test was published, the final pre-production versions of its successor were already being prepared.

Changing requirements, changing times: The brief for Asymmetric 6 

The move towards increased power, torque and weight in the high performance car sector, accelerated by the move to electrification, has driven the development of the new Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6. It features a number of innovations such as an adaptive contact patch and optimised cavity that can adapt to load variations. Every tire in Goodyear’s range is EV-ready, but Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has been specifically designed with manufacturers’ EV requirements in mind. Its noise cancelling pattern results in a reduction of 1 dB, shown on the EU tire label, while its new compound technology reduces rolling resistance, to help increase electric range³. The result is a tire that is ready for the next generation of mobility.

Just like its predecessors, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is now also a test winner. In early 2022, German magazines Auto Motor und Sport and Auto Bild both awarded the tire with wins in their summer tire tests, praising its balanced performance in dry and wet conditions.^{4 5} Auto Motor und Sport’s ‘überragend’ (outstanding) and Auto Bild’s ‘vorBildlich’ (exemplary) rating underline these premium publications’ findings from extensive testing. 

The Goodyear Eagle F1 family now includes Asymmetric 6 and the UUHP Supersport, SuperSport R and SuperSport RS tires. This diverse range means that Goodyear can meet the specialised needs of different types of performance drivers. 

By 2023, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 will be available in no fewer than 65 sizes from 17 to 22 inch fitments. Vividly showing the dramatic progress in vehicle design, the entry-level Asymmetric 6 rim dimension for compact performance cars is the same (17 inch) as the genre-defining McLaren F1 Supercar, exactly thirty years ago.

“In 2020, Goodyear set a bold goal to create a tire made 100% from sustainable materials by the end of the decade,” explains Philippe Schmit, Chief Engineer at Goodyear. “The scientists and engineers working on Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 have made great strides toward that goal.”

Schmit has vast experience in material development at Goodyear. With a career spanning roles in chemical development, compounding and material engineering he led the team of 20 experts in developing the raw materials for the new tire, as he explains: ‘The team is split so half focuses on raw materials and the other half on reinforcements, whether that be steel or organics. The main difference between Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 and its predecessor is the advanced new traction resins that make the Wet Braking Pro Technology performance so impressive. The fact that they are sustainable materials is something our team is proud of.”

Goodyear treated the development of raw materials for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 as a global project, with the target of developing a resin that can be used across the company’s future UHP products. 

Schmit adds: “Our brief was to create a resin that would boost traction and wet performance compared to the previous tire, but also hit our corporate sustainability goals. We’ve transitioned from petroleum oil-based resins to bio-resins. These are based on waste water from the paper manufacturing industry. The specific treatment of the water in that industry creates the basis for a new type of resin. This builds on Goodyear’s recent accolade from a Luxembourg business federation (FEDIL) in the Process category for its traction resin. We’ve found a significant performance improvement in using more of these resins to boost wet performance without impacting rolling resistance or wear.” 

To illustrate the march towards a fully-sustainable tire, the tread on Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has nearly three times as many bio-resins and double the amount of other sustainable materials as its predecessor.

This means the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is truly ‘ready for anything’, not only in performance terms but in bringing Goodyear’s technology to drivers of many types of car. From compact performance hatchbacks through to crossovers, sports saloons, coupes and the power of hypersaloons, the latest tire covers many genres.

The European performance vehicle parc has changed radically in recent years. Whilst sales of small and medium cars (including standard and performance variants) still account for over 50% of European sales, this ‘A+B’ segment declined from 7.8 million to 5.7 million units in the 2009-2019 period¹. However, total vehicle sales grew in the same period with the main growth being a growth in larger cars, including electrified saloons, crossovers and SUVs. For example, the SUV sector went from 1 million to nearly 5 million cars in the same period¹. Whilst this segment traditionally was for off-road orientated vehicles, the main demand growth has been for road orientated models, with the performance-focused models attracting drivers who had previously been tempted by sports saloons.   

Laurent Colantonio, Technology Director Consumer Tires EMEA, describes the impact of the blurring of the performance car sectors for Goodyear: “We have sizes in the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 range that are also in our Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV range, but with a different performance focus. Drivers may like the higher driving position of a crossover, but they demand the same handling characteristics as a performance saloon. 

“That’s why we focused on higher strength construction materials, introducing Dry Contact Plus and Wet Braking Pro Technology to make Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 ready for anything, on any type of performance car. We have been able to add these features whilst also reducing the weight of the tire, further enhancing its responsiveness and efficiency.”

Also notable is the acceleration towards electrification. In 2021, battery electric (EV) cars took a record 9% of the European market and hybrid (PHEV and HEV) also growing to a significant 20% share. Petrol car sales still lead the market with a 40% share¹.

Growing market, growing cars

The hybrid, electric and crossover segments now include many powerful models that demand the latest ultra-high performance (UHP) tires. Power figures of over 400 hp and weight exceeding two tonnes are not uncommon in the performance car sector. Even the hot-hatch segment, where Goodyear Eagle F1 has been a test-winning choice for three decades, has seen a significant shift upwards in size and performance.

Take the Volkswagen Golf GTI as an example. When the Eagle F1 was first launched in 1994, the GTI was already on its third generation. With 115 hp and a weight of just over a tonne, it offered a spirited drive. By the mid-2000s, when Goodyear replaced the Eagle F1 GS-D3 with the Asymmetric, the Mk5 GTI had over 200 hp, but had gained 300 kg. A decade later the Mk7 GTI Clubsport delivered around 300 hp with a kerb weight some 40% higher than the Mk3.

This growth, mirrored in other segments such as performance saloons, had a significant impact on tire development. The latest Golf GTI models have 225/40R18 tires, with 19 inch options. Compare that with the 1990s driver, choosing 195/50R15 Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD-2 directional tires to enhance their GTI’s handling.

Colantonio outlines what this meant for Goodyear: “The weight of performance cars increased, as did the breadth of the sector with performance saloons and crossovers joining the traditional hot hatchback and sportscar models. The flagship 18 inch sizes of 20 years ago became the entry level for many performance cars. As tires became larger, we chose to move from directional to asymmetric design to manage the extra dynamic load. This market shift also led us to ensuring we were a step ahead of the trend by using higher tensile steel and other higher strength reinforcement materials.

“Increased safety, emissions and convenience options have driven the size and weight of performance cars upwards. The technologies in Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 are focused on delivering outstanding handling and performance as weight and power increases. The new generation of performance cars are electric, with over double the torque as some current petrol powered performance cars. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is ready for anything, including bringing outstanding driving dynamics to a thrilling new era of driving."

The Goodyear Eagle F1 family has long been a top choice for petrolheads but with the launch of Asymmetric 6 Goodyear has also incorporated design elements to suit the specific demands of high-performance electric vehicles (EVs). 

Every tire in Goodyear’s range is EV-ready, but the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has been specifically designed with manufacturers’ EV requirements in mind. Sales of electric vehicles (both pure EV and hybrid) accounted for nearly 30% of new cars sold in Europe during 2021, with almost every major motor manufacturer introducing an electrified car into its product range¹.

Recent launches from leading premium sports and performance car manufacturers have added to the list of electric cars that can accelerate faster than many supercars. Goodyear has experience in developing tires for ultra high performance EVs, supplying tires for cars such as the Audi e-tron GT quattro and RS e-tron GT, Porsche Taycan and several Tesla models.

Goodyear’s electric vehicle and motorsport knowledge meant the company was chosen to supply a racing variant of the Eagle F1 family to the all-electric FIA ETCR – eTouring Car World Cup. Goodyear developed a unique treaded race tire for the 670 hp electric race cars and is applying the learnings to its latest generation of road tires, such as the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6. 

Technology focus on improving range

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 innovations include a reduction in overall tire weight² and an aerodynamic sidewall shape to manage turbulence and airflow around the tire and the side of the vehicle. Its new compound technology reduces rolling resistance, to help increase electric range².

Quiet motors mean that road noise can be more noticeable on EVs. Goodyear has introduced a noise cancelling pattern that results in a sound reduction of 1 dB across the range and as much as 2 dB in selected sizes. This is aided by a thinner sipe design compared to Asymmetric 5 and an innovative radial chamfered groove to dampen noise frequencies².

Performance matters

Drivers of performance EVs demand more than just increased mileage and efficiency. The latest performance EVs are tempting drivers out of petrol and diesel cars to experience instant torque and power delivery. Goodyear has put a lot of focus on developing the adaptive contact patch and optimised cavity to suit heavier and more powerful vehicles.

With innovations to aid the power delivery, handling and traction of hyper-powerful EVs, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 delivers a thrilling drive, matched by efficiency improvements. Following the preview announcement of the latest generation Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, Goodyear has revealed more details of the technologies within the new ultra high performance (UHP) tire. Designed to suit a wide range of performance-orientated cars, including hot hatches, sporty compacts, family cars, luxury sedans and sports coupes, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 features a number of innovations to offer superb performance on wet and dry roads. 

Dry Contact Plus Technology

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 brings a step forward in dry performance¹. This is achieved by Goodyear’s latest Dry Contact Plus Technology. A key feature is an adaptive contact patch and optimised cavity to adapt to load variations. Under standard driving conditions the tire’s contact patch has a normal footprint but this increases when the driver makes an extreme manoeuvre. The contact area therefore adapts to the driving style and increases as needed, giving the driver more grip and reactivity to extreme manoeuvres. 

Pierre Jadin, Technical Project Manager, Replacement Consumer, Goodyear, explains: “Dry Contact Plus Technology means Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 can adapt to changes in load so, when a driver makes a fast cornering manoeuvre, for example, they can rely on increased grip and reactivity. This innovation is a key feature behind Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6’s enhanced dry performance.”

Wet Braking Pro Technology

In wet weather conditions, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 cap compound with innovative new resin system allows the tire to have more micro-contact with the road surface, giving drivers better grip on damp or wet roads². Technology developed for UUHP (ultra ultra high performance) tires designed to perform as well on the racetrack as the road has been transferred to Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6. In Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, this technology increases its flexibility to be more resistant to road roughness³. This resin system boosts tire grip on the road⁴.

The development of a new tire is a true multinational team effort. Laurent Colantonio is Technology Director for Consumer Tires EMEA, based at Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg (GICL). “The increasing globalisation of car models meant that we took a global, not just European approach. Our Innovation Centers in Asia and the Americas were involved from the start of the project. This includes work on materials, testing, measurement and predictive tools. The resin system doesn’t just boost performance, it contributes to sustainability as a result of Goodyear's investment in developing bio-based resins.” 

EV Ready Technology

Every tire in Goodyear’s range is EV-ready, but Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has additional innovations to support manufacturers’ EV requirements. Its noise cancelling pattern results in a reduction of 1 dB, shown on the EU tire label. This is aided by a thinner sipe design compared to Asymmetric 5 and the addition of a radial chamfered groove to dampen noise frequencies.

“On some sizes, the reduction is 2 dB. This is significant as a 3 dB reduction would be the equivalent to reducing the noise by half. It is a huge reduction that’s particularly important for drivers of quieter EVs,” adds Colantonio. 

Other innovations include a reduction in overall tire weight⁵ and an aerodynamic sidewall shape that reduces turbulence and improves airflow around the tire and the side of the vehicle. Its new compound technology reduces rolling resistance, to help increase electric range⁵. These innovations also help reduce fuel consumption on petrol and diesel cars. 

Jadin adds: “When we say Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is ready for anything, we mean it’s ready for any vehicle in any conditions. It truly is a balanced tire, combining qualities and performance characteristics across the board. Our challenge in development was to maximise everything; not just one area. A typical OE tire might focus on keeping rolling resistance low, while sacrificing wet weather performance, for example. In Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, we have developed a tire with low rolling resistance, excellent dry and wet grip and low noise. Goodyear’s rigorous development process subjects the tire to more than 50 tests, covering every aspect imaginable.”

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was rolled out in 28 sizes in Q1 2022, with additional sizes released throughout the year. By 2023, Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 will be available in no fewer than 65 sizes from 17 to 22-inch fitments.

Leading German magazine Auto Bild has awarded Goodyear its prestigious ‘summer tire manufacturer of the year’ title, stating “The best summer tires come from Goodyear” in recognition of award-winning products across the Goodyear range that offer “dynamic top performance” in a sustainable manner¹.

This latest award was published in the 13 April 2022 issue of Auto Bild² and follows a number of recent Goodyear wins in the same magazine group, including for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6³, EfficientGrip 2 SUV⁴ and EfficientGrip Performance 2⁵. 

The review headline stated “the best summer tires come from Goodyear”, continuing on to explain that “the new tire models from Goodyear convince with both dynamic top performance as well as with future-oriented sustainability.”

Furthermore, this latest success follows on from Goodyear being awarded Auto Bild’s all-season tire manufacturer of the year award in both 2020 and 2021 with specific focus on the Vector 4Seasons Gen-3⁶. 

The latest addition to Goodyear’s summer tire range is Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6, an ultra-high performance (UHP) tire designed to be ‘Ready for Anything’, combining dry and wet performance, efficiency and readiness for electric vehicles and future mobility.

Goodyear tires will be fitted as original equipment to the brand-new BMW iX, the German manufacturer’s headline-grabbing premium electric SAV. Fitments of Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 are amongst the Goodyear tires selected by BMW for the new vehicle.
