Dunlop completes MXGP season with win in Italy

  • Romain Febvre wins MXGP race at Pietramurata
  • 18-round MXGP season comes to a close
  • Dunlop won five races throughout the season

Dunlop rounded off the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship season with a win on Sunday when Romain Febvre used Dunlop Geomax MX-33 tyres to take the chequered flag in the first race of the Grand Prix of Garda Trentino.

Riding his Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team bike, Febvre made up a handful of positions in the opening few laps to settle into second position. From there, the Frenchman kept the leader within his sights for a few more laps, before making his way through for the lead.

Comfortably in the lead, the Dunlop rider remained out front for the rest of the race to win the penultimate race of the year by two seconds. Later in the day, he finished second after a flat-out charge to take a double victory. Ultimately, Febvre placed second in the overall Grand Prix standings - enough to secure fourth place in the final championship table.

While Febvre finishes the season as the most successful Dunlop rider, Dunlop Geomax tyres took Clément Desalle and Ivo Monticelli to memorable results, too. In his final Grand Prix before retirement, Desalle finished fifth after two strong performances around the Pietramurata track.

Monticelli, meanwhile, scored the Holeshot on his GasGas bike in the opening race. It was the Italian’s fourth Holeshot of the season, with the superb traction of the Dunlop Geomax tyre range often helping him beat his rivals off the line.

Sunday’s round brought to a close an intense 18-round schedule, much of which has happened in the last three months. The MXGP calendar was heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic but an innovative one-day event format and the adoption of triple-headers, with races at the same track on a Sunday, Wednesday and the following Sunday, helped maintain a packed schedule for fans. Throughout the season, Dunlop riders took five race wins and two Grand Prix victories.

In addition to Febvre, Desalle and Monticelli, Dunlop’s star riders this year also included Monticelli’s GasGas teammate Glenn Coldenhoff and Husqvarna racers Arminas Jasikonis and Pauls Jonass. Coldenhoff and Jasikonis both stood on the top step of the podium earlier in the season.

Eddy Seel, MXGP Event Leader, Dunlop: “Today’s win for Romain was a perfect way to finish such an exciting MXGP season. We’ve had some memorable moments and several wins to celebrate, and our riders have benefitted from new MX-33 and MX-53 tyres to complement the MX-12 and MX-71 designs throughout the Geomax range. I’d like to thank our partner teams and riders, and also MXGP for organising a full campaign of races in difficult circumstances. Bring on 2021!”
