Dunlop begins MXGP season with MX2 win in Argentina

Dunlop riders completed the FIM Motocross World Championship season opener in Argentina with the MX2 win and a full Dunlop podium in the second race, including a return to the top step of the podium for Kay de Wolf and a first podium for Triumph Racing. This success demonstrates how the combination of Dunlop Geomax MX34 and MX14 provided the grip and stability needed to push to the limit on the dark Argentinian soil.

In the highly competitive MX2 class, Kay de Wolf demonstrated strong pace throughout the weekend. After finishing second in MX2 Race 1, the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider executed a remarkable comeback in Race 2, advancing from fifth to first place, securing an overall victory that put him at the top of the MX2 championship standings.

Lucas Coenen, who started from pole position after winning the RAM qualifying race, showcased great performance in Race 2, where he was battling with Triumph Racing rider Mikkel Haarup until the final lap of the race. However, a late-race mishap in the final lap saw Coenen drop back, setting the stage for de Wolf’s win.

Meanwhile, Haarup’s second-place finish marked a significant milestone for Triumph Racing as the Danish rider earned the team its first-ever heat podium in its MX2 class debut. Combined with his fifth place finish in Race 1, Haarup scored enough points to finish third overall.

The Dunlop riders in the MXGP category also continued to impress, with Romain Febvre and Pauls Jonass finishing second and third in Race 1. Kawasaki’s Febvre continued his success by taking third place in Race 2, further highlighting the reliability and performance of the Geomax tire range in both categories.

Wim Van Achter, Motorsport Manager, Dunlop: “First of all, congratulations to Kay de Wolf on securing his second Grand Prix win. We’re delighted to start the MXGP season with such strong results, with this weekend proving that the Geomax range is at the heart of our riders’ success, providing the confidence needed to push for race-winning pace.”

Kay de Wolf shared his emotions with Eurosport after the race, reflecting on his journey to victory: “I’m speechless. It means so much to me. I kept fighting to the end to get my second Grand Prix win. [...] I was struggling in the beginning, but I kept improving, and that’s what we’ve been practising all winter long - doing long motos and trying to get a little sprint in the end - and that’s what we did, so all the hard work paid off.”

The FIM Motocross World Championship action resumes on March 24th at the MXGP of Spain.
