Dunlop and Dunlop dominate Armoy Road Races

  • Five out of five wins for Michael Dunlop
  • Dunlop tyres chosen for every win
  • New lap record in Superbike class

The Armoy Road Races last weekend saw total domination by Michael Dunlop across five races, riding a mix of Honda, Yamaha and BMW bikes depending on the class. Irrespective of the bike and class, the wins also had one other thing in common - the use of Dunlop tyres.

The 2020 and 2021 Road Racing seasons have been impacted by the lockdown-related cancellation of long established events such as the Isle of Man TT and North West 200. This put even more focus on the Armoy Road Races, first run in 2009, in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The 32-year-old home rider brushed aside the opposition to seal a record ninth straight ‘Race of Legends’ victory in the headline race to complete a set of five wins. This followed his victories in the Supersport and Open A Superbike races on Saturday. Michael Dunlop has now won a record 24 times at Armoy.

Dunlop set a new Superbike lap record in the Open race of 106.945mph as he gave the new BMW M1000RR its maiden Irish road racing win. For Dunlop tyres, this was a significant result as the road-legal version of the superbike is fitted with Dunlop SportSmart TT tyres as standard. For the race, Michael Dunlop chose the Dunlop KR109 and KR108 superbike slicks.

In addition to his Superbike successes, Michael Dunlop also won both races in the 600cc Supersport class using the Dunlop D213 GP Pro.

Pat Walsh of Dunlop Motorsport explained the significance of the wins for the tyre manufacturer: “Every one of Michael’s wins was taken on a Dunlop tyre that can be bought off the shelf for track day and amateur racing. It shows the breadth and versatility of the tyre range. Congratulations to Michael on a brilliant set of five wins on three marques of bikes.”
