5th WMX World title for Kiara Fontanesi on Dunlop tyres

  • Clement Desalle confirms third in MXGP championship
  • Brad Anderson crowned EMX300 champion

Kiara Fontanesi took her sixth FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship title today on home ground at the MXGP of Italy. The title is her fifth on Dunlop tyres, this year on the new Geomax MX33.

The MXFontaRacing Syneco Yamaha rider won the final Grand Prix of the season at the Imola track with a second and first place, heading into the final race with a five point advantage on her nearest rival. From third place in the opening stages, Fontanesi first overtook her championship contender Van de Ven before then claiming the lead of the race from Papenmeier. The race win, claimed some 20 minutes later, was her fourth race win of the season and her tenth top-three race finish of the year.

The top three riders in the WMX standings were gripped by three different tyre manufacturers in a championship with an impressive seven different tyre brands competing. Fontanesi claimed the fifth Dunlop WMX title, but without Courtney Duncan’s injury it could easily have been a Dunlop/Yamaha 1-2. The two riders’ results combined make impressive reading, with nine out of the 12 race wins, five out of six Grand Prix victories and five of the six events as holders of the Red Plate for leading the championship. Duncan finishes fourth in the standings with Dunlop-shod Amandine Verstappen (KTM) in sixth.

In the FIM Motocross World Championship, it was five finishers in the top-ten in Italy, with Clement Desalle finishing the season on the MXGP podium to confirm his third place in the championship. Julien Lieber (Kawasaki) took fourth in the MXGP of Italy, with Shaun Simpson (Yamaha), Jeremy Seewer (Yamaha) and Evgeny Bobryshev (Suzuki) finishing seventh, eighth and tenth respectively.

The season finale saw four MX2 riders finish the event in the top-ten. Ben Watson (Yamaha) claimed fourth in the championship standings, with Jago Geerts (Yamaha) and Henry Jacobi (Husqvarna) ending the year in eighth and tenth respectively.

In the Motocross European Championship, Dunlop-shod KTM riders claimed the top-two MX300 spots of the season. Brad Anderson’s lead was unassailable coming into the final event and he was crowned champion with Mike Kras taking both Imola race wins and maximum points to finish in second.

Dunlop riders chose Dunlop Geomax MX33 for the hard-pack track.

Eddy Seel, Dunlop Event Leader:
“Congratulations Kiara! A sixth title is an amazing achievement. We had some great rides here this weekend, starting with Kiara’s fantastic two races for the title. Clement had another good weekend with his ninth podium of the year and third place overall – the first non-KTM finisher. Many thanks to Clement and Kawasaki.”
